More like over 40+ years. The rise of the Moral Majority and the Family Values stuff in the 80’s was the genesis of this takeover. Reframing things as moral imperatives and what Jesus would do was key in the early days, then it moved to changing “anti-abortion” to “pro-life”, and finally all the way to the reframing of “illegal immigration” as a “terrorist threat”, despite no terrorist events being tied to a person crossing the border improperly. It’s a bet that white Americans are gullible enough to agree to anything that disenfranchises or penalizes those that don’t look or sound like them, because then someone is doing worse than them…off course, that’s also right out of the Conservative playbook.

Sure, but the Democrats targeting all their efforts at the swing voting middle classes while doing very little to convince working class voters they could make a difference didn't help. Clinton's "the deplorables" slip just summed up their attitude. Left the people who were struggling wide open to any snake oil salesman who claimed he could feel their pain and he'd drain the swamp.
