Snatch (2000) Ritchie

snatch.jpg.1ba28c4c3ee23f43f9c1c079f2db7183.jpg

"There are 2 types of balls. There are brave balls and there are little mincy faggot balls."

Orite guv'nor, what's goin' on 'ere then ?  Guy Ritchie only follows up Lock, Stock by injecting a bit of Hollywood in Brad Pitt and Benicio Del Torro into his 2nd East End crime caper. You fackin' mug.

All The Presidents Men (1976) Pakula

"The White House has had no involvement whatever in this particular incident"

Over to some more serious stuff now as Redford and Hoffman as Woodward and Bernstein attempt to uncover a huge political corruption story, Richard Nixon's Watergate, with the help of 'Deep Throat'.

The Battle of Algiers (1966) Pontecorvo

"It's hard to start a revolution, even harder to continue it and hardest of all to win it. But, it's only afterwards, when we have won, that the true difficulties begin"

The FLN wage an insurgency for Algerian independence. The French respond by sending in their crack paratroopers.

This was in my list. An incredible film. It used everyday people rather than actors for all the roles except the French paratroop Major. Some of the scenes so closely resemble media newsreel that the film had to come with a warning. It's been studied by insurgents and counterinsurgency groups and was shown at the Pentagon during the Iraq War.

Anyone who hasn't seen this should do themselves a favour and watch it. It's incredible.

The Dark Knight (2008) Nolan

dark-knight-joker-main.jpg.912607edbfece8557acb9582da4aaf8d.jpg

"You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain"

An iconic performance from Heath Ledger as the Joker in the 2nd of Nolan's Batman Trilogy. 15 years on, it remains the high water mark for the superhero genre.

I tried watching Dune last week. I got as far as the boy and his maw getting picked up by the Spice planet people. I had no idea what was going on, but I'm sure that was due to the limitations of the medium.

I tried watching Snatch last week. I lasted about three minutes.

Heat is excellent.

"I can see much clearer now I'm blind"

This Italian film is a beautiful love letter to cinema in which a director reminisces back to his childhood in post war Sicily and his friendship with the blind local film projector.

It's a fantastic film and a good example of the original release being superior to the DC. Great soundtrack,  superb acting from the young boy and the old man and an ending which would bring tears to a glass eye.

Toy Story (1995) Lasseter

Toy-Story-Animation.thumb.jpg.3b0a9af81214e77292065d504ba25602.jpg

"To infinity... and beyond"

The only animated film in our list is the game changing Toy Story from Disney/Pixar, the first ever fully computerised animation. Woody, Buzz and the gang's influence can still be felt today.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) Kubrick

" Sir, I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man Sir"

Kubrick's Vietnam film is split into 2 with a harrowing look at both recruit training (with a memorable performance from R. Lee Ermey) and combat during the Battle of Huê. Neither the best Vietnam film, or the best Kubrick one, but still great.

American History X (1998) Kaye

"Do you see this ? That means NOT WELCOME"

A film that possibly feels more relevant now than when it was originally released. Recently paroled from jail, Edward Norton's rehabilitated neonazi tries to stop his younger brother following the same destructive path.

The Shining (1980) Kubrick

the-shining-ss3.jpg.a6cd462e3d401b2826e70511ebcc5778.jpg

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"

We're off to spend a night at The Overlook with Jack and Wendy and go ever so slightly crazy in this Kubrick adaptation of a Steven King novel. This instantly recognisable psychological horror has been quoted and parodied countless times.

The stuff after Scarlett Johansson driving about Govan in a van picking up men may well have been very serious, but I was out of it by that point. That and her walking up the Gallowgate and listening to Kaye Adams on the radio.

How poor is Kaye Adams musical taste ?

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Villeneuve

Blade_Runner_2049_Lighting.jpg.3dac6869ac91a14fd27b3e1b9894cd43.jpg

"All the courage in the world cannot alter fact"

A sequel 35 years in the making, which manages to feel both fresh and yet faithful to the original. Ryan Gosling's K is the replicant blade runner, encountering an old face whilst uncovering a conspiracy that threatens civilisation in a dystopian future.

Se7en (1995) Fincher

se7en_0.thumb.jpg.37fb729b0e7c0df75ffd12bb0c076da8.jpg

"Ernest Hemmingway once wrote "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for" I agree with the 2nd part"

A pair of detectives chase an unknown serial killer basing his murders on the 7 deadly sins. Arguably quite an innovative and influential film with a famous, shocking twist at the end.

Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (2003) Jackson

lotr-3-min.jpg.a43f304720975f8a23009580b7bb285f.jpg

"It's over. It's done"

The epic Trilogy comes to an end with amazing CGI, 11 Oscars including Best Film and Best Director, the ring destroyed and evil defeated. Only one question remains, why didn't they just fly on those giant eagles all the way to Mordor ? Would have saved a bit of time.

The Green Mile (1999) Darabont

GREEN-1_1575975387.thumb.jpg.b72ff77ef6fabcda272e461d13af9df3.jpg

"I'm tired boss"

Time to tug at the heartstrings with this emotional tale of big hearted prisoner Jon Coffey, sent to walk The Green Mile. Adapted from a Steven King story with his usual touch of the supernatural.

Vertigo (1958) Hitchcock

Vertigo-movie-ending.thumb.jpg.9e7235307159b7c32b47de1e17efe0a7.jpg

"Only one is a wanderer. Two together are always going somewhere"

Big Alfred finally makes an appearance on the list. Jimmy Stewart has a fear of heights and an obsession with a woman, shown to us with typical Hitchcockian innovation and flair.

Jurassic Park (1993) Spielberg

"I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way"

We're back in blockbuster land and back in time, sort of, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Spawning a whole franchise, including 5 more films, although this remains the best. That man Spielberg simply could not miss in the 90's.

First movie I remember the hype around at the cinema. We queued for ages to get in the Allanpark in Stirling.
