Sheffield United were clearly happy to take the £££ and go straight back down. I'd put them down as the worst team ever to grace the Barclays.

Oooft, was about to post that as a "didn't ever see Derby" type comment but then you go on to say you did. Mystifying opinion in that case. Derby were dreadful.

I saw that Derby team in the flesh, as they were pumped 6-0 at Anfield.

They were utterly dreadful.

This.

Surely the bottom 3 this season have between them amassed the lowest points total for the relegated teams and Nottingham Forest must also be on course to survive with the lowest points total since football started in 1992.

When Derby went down Birmingham were 19th with 35 and Fulham survived on goal difference ahead of Birmingham on 36 points which would be 10 points clear of the drop at the moment.

Derby may have got less points but Sheffield utd got gubbed 9-1 on aggregate by a team as shit as Burnley

Good question:

2023/24 with a game to go - Luton 26, Burnley, 24, Sheffield Utd 16 = 66
2022/23 - Leicester 34, Leeds, 31, Southampton 25 = 90
2021/22 - Burnley 35, Watford 23, Norwich 22 = 80
2020/21 - Fulham 28, WBA 26, Sheffield Utd 23 = 77
2019/20 - Bournemouth 34, Watford 34, Norwich 21 = 89
2018/19 - Cardiff 34, Fulham 26, Huddersfield 16 =76
2017/18 - Swansea 33, Stoke 33, WBA 31 = 97
2016/17 - Hull 34, Middlesbrough 28, Sunderland 24 = 86
2015/16 - Newcastle 37, Norwich 34, Aston Villa 17 = 88
2014/15 - Hull 35, Burnley 33, QPR 30 = 98
2013/14 - Norwich 33, Fulham 32, Cardiff 30 = 95
2012/13 - Wigan 36, Reading 28, QPR 25 = 89
2011/12 - Bolton 36, Blackburn 31, Wolves 25 = 92
2010/11 - Birmingham 39, Blackpool 39, West Ham 33 = 111
2009/10 - Burnley 30, Hull 30, Portsmouth 19 = 79
2008/09 - Newcastle 34. Middlesbrough 32, WBA 32 = 98
2007/08 - Reading 36, Birmingham 35, Derby 11 = 82
2006/07 - Sheffield Utd 38, Charlton 34, Watford 28 = 100
2005/06 - Birmingham 34, WBA 30, Sunderland 15 = 79
2004/05 - Crystal Palace 33, Norwich 33, Southampton 32 = 98
2003/04 - Leicester 33, Leeds 33, Wolves 33 = 99
2002/03 - West Ham 42, WBA 26, Sunderland 19 = 87
2001/02 - Ipswich 36, Derby 30,  Leicester 28 = 94
2000/01 - Man City 34, Coventry 34, Bradford 26 = 94
1999/00 - Wimbledon 33, Sheffield Wed 31, Watford 24 = 88
1998/99 - Charlton 36, Blackburn 35, Nottingham Forest 30 = 101
1997/98 - Bolton 40, Barnsley 35, Crystal Palace 33 = 108
1996/97 - Sunderland 40, Middlesbrough 39 (docked 3 points), Nottingham Forest 34 = 113
1995/96 - Man City 38, QPR 33, Bolton 29 = 100

That's all the seasons with 3 teams going down.  Even if all 3 of the bottom 3 this season could win on the last day they'd still be short of the next lowest season.

Forest are on 29 points currently which will be the lowest total to avoid the drop. Even if they get to 32 points it'll still be the lowest!

This.

I mean, Sheffield United have conceded at least 5 goals in 6 league games this season including 6 to Arsenal and 8 (at home) to Newcastle.

Derby were massively shite but also didn't get £100m worth of TV money. There's really no excuse for Sheffield United to be quite as bad as they have been.

This feels like those arguments about Maradona vs Messi only the complete opposite

Well yes, but not to claim it's not awful anyway, lets not forget Forest were docked 4 points so with victory at Burnley could still get to what is effectively 36 points.

Neither did anyone else. Derby's relative income to the rest of the division won't be significantly different to Sheffield United's. You say that like they are the only team who get £100m. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter that much what you get in revenues if all the opposition are getting the same or more.

Sheffield United have clearly chucked it once behind in a lot of games this season but they've still offered a threat in a lot of games even up to recently, taking the lead at Old Trafford and at home to Forest until they folded later in the match. That Derby team offered pretty much no threat to anyone at all.

Forgot all about that.  West Ham finished with 35 points in 2009/10 but WBA did their last day survival act in 04/05 to survive with 34 points.
