Brass Eye (1997-2001)

"This was the one thing we didn't want to happen"

Does satire have a limit ? Lots of people certainly thought so regarding this controversial show written by Chris Morris, Charlie Brooker and Graham Linehan.

This was in my list. I think it gets it pretty spot on in the satire of media sensationalism and was maybe ahead of its time.

The A-Team (1983-1987)

3000(2).thumb.jpg.7e60e90584f348d53434d7b96b42cd57.jpg

"I love it when a plan comes together"

I genuinely pity the fool who does not enjoy The A-Team.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... THE A-TEAM.

Scrubs (2001-2010)

"I'm no superman"

Comedy with daydreaming doctor J.D. and his fellow interns Elliot and Turk.

Don't mind this tbh. Fond memories of watching this during my layabout, unemployed days, waking up late, lying in bed and switching on E4.

"I'm a monster"

More American comedy with the dysfunctional, formerly wealthy Bluth family struggling to come to terms with their new financial reality.

The Fast Show (1994-2004)

"Oohh, suits you sir"

Classic sketch show from Whitehouse and Higson. Another where I could have chosen numerous pictures and catchphrases to quote.

Chernobyl (2019)

"when the truth offends, we lie and lie until we can longer remember it is even there."

Back to some more serious stuff with widely acclaimed mini series Chernobyl, which charts the disaster that unfolded in Pripyat in 1986.

Lost (2004-2010)

"a leader can't lead until he knows where he's going"

One of the biggest, most successful and most expensive shows ever made - the pilot episode alone cost $14 million to make.

A group of survivors are left stranded on a mysterious island as we're treated to flashbacks, flashforwards and all sorts of sci-fi and supernatural goings on. Lots of complex and cryptic stuff here, are they in hell or purgatory ? was it all just the dreams of a dog ?

This was number 6 in the 2012 list, so quite a drop here.

Life on Mars (2006-2007)

lifeonmars-1000x600.jpg.dae290f62d80c968c8b6b19bf2592afb.jpg

"reckon you've got concussion, but personally, I couldn't give a tart's furry cup if half your brains are falling out"

Polisman John Simm is involved in a car accident and wakes up back in time to when men were men and women knew their place. DCI Gene Hunt gets all the best lines as he fires up the Quattro.

It wasn't a Quattro (that's Ashes to Ashes).

It was a Ford Cortina.

House (2004-2012)

200w(10).gif.35cc1c027f162dd8d23b1cdfa3017eea.gif

"It's nothing personal, I don't like everybody"

If I was making a show called House, it would be about the secret, tempestuous relationship between a young bingo caller (played by Barry Keoghan) and one of the elderly, divorced patrons (Helen Mirren) of a Northern English Bingo Hall.

They decided to make it about an incredibly brilliant but grumpy doctor instead, played by Hugh Laurie. This also has Dr. @Lisa Cuddy in it as well.

The Walking Dead (2010-2022)

Quel-ordre-Regarder-TWD.thumb.jpg.d059bddf4b6d00e5e017f931a33e42f1.jpg

"this isn't a democracy anymore"

Based on the comic books/graphic novels of the same name, polisman Rick Grimes awakes from a coma to find the world has gone to shit, the dead have risen and are eating folk for lunch.

A huge show with at least 4 or 5 spin offs, video games etc. I enjoyed this for a while, but it started plodding along aimlessly and I got fed up. Eventually finished it a few months back on the insistence of the wife, who loves it.

bojack-horseman-season-6-1210x642.thumb.jpg.afe9d31c41a9c488fa4855206c1525d7.jpg

"I am in pain. All the time"

Surreal adult animation next with the anthropomorphic 90's sitcom star Bojack plotting his comeback in a show that deals well with serious issues such as depression and alcoholism.

Yes, Minister (1980-1984)

giphy(15).gif.78d4f6d801a58e9b386f985172dc6b83.gif

"They have the right to be ignorant. Knowledge implies complicity, ignorance has a certain dignity"

Political satire with Yes, Minister and the follow up Yes, Prime Minister as Jim Hacker struggles to get stuff done thanks to his advisors and the civil service. This was Maggie Thatcher's favourite show, which is something I guess.
