End of season report card

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen one of these pop up yet so thought I'd take the liberty of getting one going.

Everyone knows the drill, a rating of A+ to F for each of the teams from season 23/24 along with reasons why from analytical to "witty" and everything in between.

The Bullen months: F

The White interregnum: A

The Brown era: B

The off-field considerations: B-

Overall: C-

After suffering through the decline and inevitable end of Lee Bullen's time in charge with eye-bleeding football setting us on the fast-track to League One, it was a pleasant change to switch to a more able manager with a plan and apparently the ability to implement it. Not every game was perfect, but Brown got more out of the squad he inherited than I thought was possible and survival with a game to spare was a welcome conclusion to a forgettable year. New stand went up, which was good. For me, the club comes across a bit *too* pleased with themselves about this, but the majority view is absolutely that this is fair dos, so who am I to argue?

Aye I’d agree with all this.

I think from the outside fans will say Brown did an ok job keeping us up but he had to deal with a ridiculous amount of injuries towards the end of the season. Not to mention he actually signed decent players in January who played a part in keeping us up. He’s got a clear idea of how he wants to play and comes across better than I thought he would on camera.

Dundee United B+

Domination was expected from a squad and budget far above anything else in the league. That never materialised, however, saying anything other than mission accomplished in terms of winning the league and getting back up at first go this season would be a bit misguided.

Raith Rovers B+

Talked up at the start of the season as likely to have a decent go of things and so it transpired. On their day they were very good, albeit inconsistencies showed at vital times in the season. Clearly a very talented squad, in terms of management Murray is also clearly a good manager but throughout his career has struggled to get things "over the line" and so it transpired again with utter capitulation in the play off final.

Partick Thistle A

A higher rating than either DU or Raith simply due to the fact that a year ago all the talk was of financial combustion and a dire future. The ship was righted, decent signings were made and reasonably consistent performances followed. Must be kicking themselves that they never got past Raith as there is zero chance Ross County would have horsed six past them over two legs.

Airdrie A

Huge overachievement in first season back in a decade. A thin squad on a tight budget who played very nice football and rode out some very, very sticky periods injury wise. If Rhys McCabe can maintain the progress this season he'll be off to a bigger job in no time.

Morton B-

An odd season for Morton in the classic "shit sandwich" model with the best of times happening in the middle part of the season. Huge injury and inconsistency problems blighted them, albeit a 5th placed finish puts a reasonable veneer on things. Wild discipline that will need to be reined in by the least likable manager in the league this season.

Dunfermline C

An injury plagued season for the pars where the most positive thing that could be said in the overall picture is that safety was maintained and now they have the opportunity to kick on.

Ayr United C

The ultimate in inconsistency, some really good performances, some utter dross. Highlighted by their utter ownership of Airdrie but then getting beat, usually by the odd goal, by mostly everyone else at some point

Queen's Park C-

Started the season as the banter club of the division with their ridiculous ownership situation, embarrassing ground and mad continental experiment on the pitch. They really were dross until Davidson (clearly there for his big bag of cash) righted the ship. Surely next season can't be as bad.

ICT F

Took over the banter baton with gusto from QP, hiring repeat failure big Dunc on eye watering wages and then proceeding to sink like a stone through awful anti football. In a mess on the park, off the park and now a semi Fife club *shudder*. Hard times ahead.

Arbroath D-

End of an era, punched above their weight for a long, long time but wasn't to be. The end of Dick's reign is almost symbolic for how things played out. The best away day in the division and a likable group of fans. Will hopefully do well next year.

Pros: didn't go down, shiny new stand (we have 4 of them btw), emptied our resident bald fraud, took ownership of Airdrie, didn’t end the season with an 8-0 defeat and a Somerset Hub Jamboree, pie sales increased by 500%

Cons: watching the football

Grade: C

See me after class

Good summary.Would also add that Thistle had a bad injuries toward end of season(Wasiri,Adeloye,Lawless) that you can't help feeling that without these would have gotten us to at least the playoff final .

Dundee United- kicked out the upper class due to poor performances- has his mum pay for additional tutoring and has been moved back up, hung out with class clown Raith rovers for a bit but removed themselves from this negative influence to ensure they could go see their mates from before.  B

Raith rovers, moved out from his rape apologist Dad's last year and in with his mum who has a new boyfriend in a nicer part of town, have drastically improved performances but has not been moved up after they stopped hanging out with Dundee United and then smeared shit on their final exam . A-

Patrick- performed at a similar level to previous years C.

Airdrie- Previously when they have been at this level they have been the class dunce and immediately moved back down, they have taken a new approach this time and drastically outperformed expectations. A+

Morton- worked hard and comfortably avoided any moving down after an initial poor start. C

Dunfermline- came into the season woefully unprepared believing they could live off their success at a lower level , were left scrambling after failing the prelim, dug themselves out that hole and will remain at this level . D

Ayr- after losing their extra credits from last due to having a good striker flaws were exposed and changes were made mid-term to rectify these. C

Queens park.  Applied wild techniques early season and kept insisting to the teacher they were right and it was unfair they were getting poor grades. Eventually started employing more conventional techniques and have been allowed to remain. D

Inverness- after a very poor start chances were made however ultimately their hope of just providing long winded answers and boring people to death didn't gain the marks required. Competence was checked with a final exam which was failed . Alky Da has turned up at the school gates ranting something about Kelty D-

Arbroath Did not start well and long term relationship fell apart, things did not improve with new partner and it was known long before end of term they'd not be rejoining the class F

A for Airdrie

Highest league finish since the final season of the original Airdrieonians, with the Diddy Cup as a bonus?  Absolutely wonderful.  Some great days and a real sense that things are moving in the right direction, played some great football at times and wildly surpassed expectations.  Having finished well short of a title challenge last year, and come up through the playoffs needing penalties to beat a stinking Hamilton side and then not really strenghtened much in the summer (we knew Toddy was a good signing, but lost Smith to another team in this division), I don't think anyone could have predicted we'd finish where we did.  I was optimistic about survival, but expected us to take a few sore ones over the course of the season.  In the end we took only two, and while there were a few poor performances over the course of the season, you're always going to get some of those over 36+ games.
Very satisfied indeed.

Encouraging start, followed by 5 months of absolute torture until Davidson took over. Although I still think we should've won a few more games he ultimately got the job done considering we looked like finishing 10th for a good while.

D overall considering we came into this year off the back of a year where we challenged for the league title, but there's plenty of reason to feel more optimistic about next season.

Thistle B-

Finished more or less where most sensible fans expected preseason despite the financial woes of last spring. Never really in a title race and a thin squad, which was unbalanced for the first 6 months meant play offs were always on the cards. Reached 3rd in September then stayed for the remainder of the season. Play off games perhaps should have made the final but unlikely to have been able to better RC once again as team is weaker overall than the one which failed 12 months prior.

QP under veldman - D-

QP under davidson - B

quite dissapointing considering where we were at the end of last season and the expectations coming into this one. after december i'm just truly delighted we haven't been sent back to the seasides.

a good base is set for next season with a load of key players back, hopefully savoury, longridge & bruce included.

Overall - C-

C- Poor recruitment in the summer, relied a lot on the L1 title winning team and despite saying we'd been preparing for the summer window six months early, we waited and waited then left everything last minute. Injuries battered us this season and it wasn't squad players, basically every important player including captain and most influential midfielders. That spell around November - February was hellish. However, Chris Kane, Fagan-Walcott coming in and our injured guys returning and hitting form really helped. If the momentum had stayed we nearly could have made a challenge for 4th but we left it too little too late, however staying up was enough. Losing to Raith five out of six times and for the last five in a row was terrible. They well and truly had out number this year. Will be pleased to see the back of Easton if he does go and hope some Premiership team try and temp Vaughan and Stanton away...

Big season ahead for the Pars, we need to get a good window and kick on, however the big issue for us is that some of the deadwood at the club are still under contract for another year. Hopefully injury luck goes in our favour and there's no reason we can't challenge for the playoffs in what will be an incredibly exciting league.

I'd probably give qp a D over the course of the season. Football has been better (if not the most entertaining) since Davidson came in, but the veldman era was shocking. Can see what he was trying to do but also there are things I can't understand... Why change the dugouts? Off the park has been alright, I think the community stuff is good but the stadium situation is shite. I'm obviously happy we're not relegated and that we've retained most of our good players (so far) but if we were one place lower in the league this would probably be an F. Better things around the corner you'd like to think

Early form looked OK - despite the results, I actually thought our performances against Raith and United were decent and we were holding up well against what were form teams at the time. As became increasingly clear through the rest of the season though, we were powderpuff in attack and mentally pretty weak.

And then the injuries came and it was brutal. As players returned, results started improving but performances were still pretty poor. Maybe that's to be expected in a turbulent year but it's definitely not good enough. Squad was very imbalanced, pretty inexperienced and while there's a very good core of players there, overall just not at the level that's required.

Individually, need better performances. Tactically, need to be more potent in attack. And from a coaching perspective, standard of the squad needs to be raised considerably. In terms of McPake/Mackay, I think they've done pretty well given what's at their disposal but they do have to find a way to keep the squad fit next year and become a more potent attacking threat - going to be under significant pressure this year in what will be a very difficult season.
