The SHIRE Cup is back, baby.

Recommended Posts

One of Scotland's oldest (and largest, size wise) trophies makes a welcome return next season for the first time since 2016. The world famous Stirlingshire Cup.

Stirling Albion, Alloa, Dumbarton(??), East Stirlingshire, Falkirk and Stenhousemuir will all be competing for this most prestigious of honours. Two groups of three, winners to meet in the final.  Stenny are still technically the current holders having won the last tournament in 2015.

Great stuff.

Amazing to see the cup return! Have some excellent memories of it.

Would have been a nice opportunity to maybe knock it up to 9 or 12 teams and/or a different format given the amount of local teams now in the pyramid. There must be a bunch in tier 5 and 6. Get them involved.

Where has this come from? Haven't seen it anywhere. Delighted if it is though.

If successful it would be great to extend it to other Stirlingshire teams to round it up to 8 teams.

Could invite Broomhill, seeing as they groundshare at the Rock :whistle

Or more likely didn't know it was being brought out of retirement to apply.

It was a joke, nothing against the cup. It looks decent, wish there were more of them around. Better than meaningless, nothing friendly matches

It was especially odd they abandoned 2015-16 with just the final outstanding.

Lets hope it fares better than the Fife Cup.

Finger crossed they double the groupstage next season to incorporate:

Bo'ness Utd, University of Stirling
Dunipace, Sauchie
Camelon
Clydebank

Yeah hope so, Clydebank and Camelon have both won the cup back in the early 1900s. There was  Bo'ness in the cup too at one point but I don't think it was United.

Hibee - are these the 6 'closest' clubs geographically to Stirling that are in the pyramid (and not in the cup) ?

Can't seem to find any remotely high res images of the full trophy - it's absolutely magnificent though

Possibly one for the history boffins - but I'm sure years ago in a programme, it made the claim that the Stirlingshire cup is the oldest football cup in the world that still uses the original trophy?

They're the 6 other licensed SFA members within catchment of Stirling, Falkirk, Clackmannanshire and Dunbartonshires.

LC group fixtures place Falkirk + Dumbarton both as odd team on Tuesday 23rd July... perhaps they'll play their Stirlingshire Cup tie then?

Stenhousemuir and Stirling Albion are both odd team on Saturday 20th but are in different pools.

Here's one from today of Gregor Buchanan holding the trophy.
