die hard doonhamer
There goes Lyth's test career. Hales in for the next one.
WullieBroonIsGod
72 series runs for Lyth.. Average of 12. Buhbye Have to agree, though there isn't anyone standing out in county cricket. Alex Hales name will be banded around though England have failed to replace Strauss at the top of the order. These top order collapses are always likely with an opener not scoring and exposing 3 and 4 to the new ball.

H_B
Just can't have a guy in an Ashes series that you expect to get out for 6 every innings. And so does he. Dearth of options obviously. Boycott maybe?

He needs a score to get his confidence back.

Thing is.. Though it would never happen.. I'd still back Trescothick to outscore every option they will consider over the next two tests.

WullieBroonIsGod
Always like Tres. Could see him doing a job on home series, but maybe not touring. As you say though, it'll never happen
Savage Henry
Bell and Root are comfortably the best England batters to watch. I reckon Root's a future superstar.
H_B
No.. They'll never consider it. But in a way why not ? Winning the Ashes would be an enormous thing. Which option is more likely to succeed over just a 2 test spell? One of your best openers of the past 20 years or one of a number of known failures ? Compton.. Hales.. Carberry

I'd say Root's a superstar right now. Very reliable already. If he doesn't finish his career as England's top test match run scorer then something will have gone seriously wrong.
Bobby Skidmarks
Hales might be worth a try and could be just as successful as Warner was when he was brought in as the T20 specialist, but I wouldn't object to moving Ali up to open and bringing in a specialist spinner, he does bat no3 for Worcs.

It's sometimes overlooked is many runs he's made. Point taken though. I can see him being in the Lara, Tendulkar group when all is said and done.

Carberry Carberry was far from a failure. He was the scapegoat of that Ashes tour because Cook wouldn't admit his captaincy was horrendous. Another unfortunate victim of the ECB's mismanagement of the last two or three years. I'm a huge advocate of Hales, but Carberry deserves another chance.

A lot was made about his age too, which I thought very unfair, especially when you see what Chris Rogers has done for the Aussies
booitsme7
The move up to 3 has worked for Bell as he brings up his second fifty of the match.
H_B
What an absolutely humiliating beasting this has been.. Not much better an effort than England produced at Lords. And this was after winning the toss. Absolutely shambolic performance from Australia. Total garbage.
