Quite a productive day. On a whim, me and my flatmate had decided to buy a wee cheap greenhouse for tomatoes, so off to B&Q we went! We then got a bit ambitious, and so decided to finally sort the front garden out. To set the scene, we had a wee scabby lawn with some overgrown things that used to be flowerbeds, but they had sort of merged with the lawn and looked awful. We had only done the bare minimum for the last couple years (and nothing at all except mowing in the years before I moved in).

But now we've edged the lawn and put a load of log roll along the edge so we have distinct and clear borders. We've also weeded all the beds and trimmed most of the bushes back (some still to tidy up), and totally filled up our recycling bin. Because the soil quality is so poor, we mixed all the beds with an absolute ton of compost, and we're going to need more. Not enough good quality soil in that garden. We've planted some wee flowers (Dizzie Lizzies and some others) amongst the existing (now trimmed) shrubbery, and have also put a wee coldframe in the front garden to replace a scuzzy bit of garden. Have to say, it looks a hell of a lot better than the wasteland that was there, and we plan to add a bit more compost to it to raise the beds a bit.

Have seeds for peppers and chillis, and some of them will go in the coldframe. We also bought one of those wee plastic greenhouses, but thats round the back (no room). We've got tomato plants in there. All in all, a good day well spent! :D

Cut the grass at the front and edged it. Pulled up some weeds from the patch.

Made dandelion tea from some of the weeds I pulled up. It's good for you, everyone should try it. :P

The dandelions are reserved for the daughters' guinea pigs. They absolutely love them. I should maybe have a chew on one myself to see what's so good about them.

Then again, the French name for dandelion is piss-en-lit or pee-the-bed, so maybe not.

This warm spell has really brought things on a treat. :D

Flower wise - clematis growing as well as climbing rose(to cover fence) and the tulips are glorious! Broom is bright yellow just now and looks great, wisteria is budding too and azalea is just about to burst into colour :)

Veg wise - herbs all coming on, tomatoes nearly ready to go into grow bags and cucumber is germinating in greenhouse as are peppers and chillies. Early tatties now showing as well as rocket and salad leaves. New strawberry plants in pot and ready to harden off. Rasp bush now has leaves. :)

I am going to sow the beans and peas this weekend.

Being a Wiccan with herbalist knowledge, I can confirm they have diuretic properties. A few young leaves in a salad, say, will be okay, but eat too many could cause temporary incontinence.

It's is an effective yet gentle diuretic, increasing the flow of urine by stimulating the excretion of salts and water from your kidneys. Dandelion has an advantage over other diuretics as a natural source of potassium and is commonly used in treating conditions such as high blood pressure, liver disorders and pre-menstrual bloating. You can make a simple dandelion root tea or buy dried dandelion root tablets from good health shops. ;)

Any more White Witchery questions, feel free to ask! B)

  • 4 weeks later...

Not nearly as epic as Matt Bairn, but I've continued to work on my wee garden.

A few weeks back it was a complete wasteland, but we've put in some work for long term development.

A few weeks back we cleared the flowerbeds, put in a wee greenhouse round the back, and in the front we put a wee cold frame and a load of wooden borders to divide flower bed and lawn. We also turned the flowerbed over, put in some wee plants, planted some tomatoes in the greenhouse, and propagated a few plants indoors.

Earlier in the week we put a bit of wire netting against the wall and planted some climbers by the door to go up it, moved the seedlings into the coldframe, and trimmed all the hedges and plants. Tonight I properly cut and raked the lawn, pulled up some of the weeds and finally reseeded some of the sparse bits round the edges and the bald patches to hopefully encourage a bit more growth.

The flower beds are a bit rubbish still, but we've got flowers in, and in the autumn I am going to properly turn them over, clear them, and then mix a load of compost in to raise the level and have them ready for next spring. With the borders, cold frame, climbing plants, and lawn reseeding, the hard work has been done and next summer we will properly see all the long term effects.

This wet weather mixed with bouts of sun has brought everything on - including the weeds! <_<

The garden is now really colourful. Tthe alliums I planted last winter are gorgeous! All my hanging baskets are potted up although I put one out too early the contents died.

Veg looking good too, except my carrot seed didn't germinate and needed to sow another batch. Put in marigolds in case the carrot fly got to them. In the greenhouse, tomatoes getting quite big now but cucumber and peppers are a bit slow.

I've tried to grow thyme, basil and oregano from seed. The basil is sprouting now, but the thyme and oregano are pathetic. Anyone had success with these???? All my other herbs are great - parsley, coriander, mint, chives, sage and taragon.

How's everyone's plots doing??? :):)

Ill post pic of my veg next week.

Currently the weeds on my monoboock are a pain in the tits.

Im thinking of weedkiller but can only use it in areas away from the plants etc.

Im considering lifting it all up and putting some plastic sheeting down to try and reduce the amount that comes through.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Alright guys,

Thought I'd "bump" this one as it seemed a bit gentler to throw my first few posts in than the rough and tumble of the normal forums!!

Anyway, with not a huge garden I've got three bags of potatoes going on-one first earlies that the leaves are growing out the top of the bag and some second earlies that need covered in compost. When do u harvest them?

Got carrots and lettuce (I think coming on nicely) and some beetroot too. Growing peas that seem to be growing well - getting bigger anyway but the leaves seem to have got spots(?) and some dwarf beans.

Any advice on the above from anyone woud be gratefully accepted.

PS They're all in troughs etc rather than being in the ground....--+

Its not really my area as I specialise in destruction so I can't offer any constructive advice, sorry. But I am curious about your tatties in "bags", how does that work? Is it like really big tomato grow bags?

perhaps not that exact episode, but you get the idea

I'll try and describe - and remember I'm no gardener hence the post for help! My mum gave me three sort of thick nylon bags and about six potatoes, each labelled with some name and instructions or other. You had to put the potatoes(magic beans) in the bag and cover with compost then leave to grow and after they'd grown a bit cover them some more until they'd grown out the top. Now they've grown out the top, is it now to harvest them or although they're flowering do I leave them til June or something??

Presumably its written on the bag! But leave them be for now. While flowering, they are still growing. I think you have to leave them till long after flowering is over and the leaves have started to look a bit droopy.
