Black Scottish Footballers

Recommended Posts

Done extensive research on this topic as it covered a big area of my dissertation. Historically Andrew Watson was our first black footballer although not born here. Edinburgh born John Walker also featured for Hearts over 100 years ago, then almost 100 years flew by with not 1 black Scottish footballer. A few black footballers featured for Scottish clubs over that period but they were not Scottish (Walter Tull Rangers Gil Heron Celtic). The next to feature was the half Indian Paul Wilson who was from Glasgow and made a decent impact at Celtic and became the first mixed race Scottish born player to receive a cap. Unfortunately he only gained one cap in 1975. Edinburgh brothers Peter Foley and Dougie Johnstone both made minimal impact in their careers. Foley at Scunthorpe where he experienced shocking levels of racism and Johnstone at St Mirren and Dumbarton before slipping into the juniors. Glaswegian Victor Kasule was the next to make the grade making a great impact at both Albion Rovers and Meadowbank Thistle before moving down south. Although a really talented player he was a nutcase. At the time because he was such a minority this could have contributed to his behaviour as others may have singled him out at the time. Iffy Onoura was from Glasgow and made a big impact in the English lower leagues for the best part of 16 years. Mikey McArthur made a minimal impact at Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. He was from Kilwinning

Into the 90s and a few more started to make the breakthrough. Brian McPhee was a late starter in the game at Queens Park and boy did the fans love him everywhere he went. He is a mixed race Glaswegian who wowed fans of Airdrie, Queens Park, Livingston, Hamilton and Dumbarton with his predatory instinct and all round ability. Dave Smith was the first black manager to manage a senior Scottish club at Montrose, but surprisingly finding information on him has proved to be extremely difficult. Kevin Harper was the most high profile making a good impact at Hibs and Scotland youth teams. Although from Oldham he was raised in Glasgow Other black Scottish footballers over the 90s are:

Matt Dyer East Fife born Aberdeen

Malcolm Kpedekpo Aberdeen from Aberdeen

Jazz Juttla Rangers youth, Morton, Asian background from Glasgow.

Chris Iwelumo, who started off at St Mirren in the 90s but would then go on to have a good career abroad and down south. He one Scotland caps (lets forget them) and was from Coatbridge

With immigration increasing in the 80s 90s and 2000s more have made the grade in recent times and I expect the number to increase further in future.

Here are some players who have featured in past 15 years

David Craig Montrose from Aberdeen

Chris Ogboke Montrose, Elgin from Aberdeen

Chris Mackie , Rutherglen. Leighton McIntosh, Dundee, Lee Sibanda, Kirkcaldy, Mo Yaqub, Glasgow, Kenny MacKay, ? Errol Douglas, ? Aaron Sinclair, Aberdeen, Declan McDaid, Greenock, Fraser Forbes, Elgin, Manny Panther, Glasgow, Ikechi Anya, Glasgow, Danny Ogunmade, Glasgow, Darren Cole, Edinburgh, Omar Kader,Edinburgh

Nathan Austin at East Fife is a great prospect. Banged in 4 last night. What has happened to Aaron Taylor Sinclair? Not featured at all this season

He's shite, will never make it above the bottom 2 leagues, you ever actually seen him?

He's actually English, but we would probably get him on the "Schooled for 5 years" rule!!!

Played against Nathan hundreds of times.

He was good at that level but excelling against me isn't a sign of greatness tbh.

I think stat man had just seen that he had scored 4 goals and came away with 'great prospect' tbh

Be lucky to be in L1 or 2 in 5 year time

Declaim Mcdaid isn't black.
