  1. Surfer Blood - Catholic Pagans I'm loving Surfer Blood at the moment.
  2. Crazy Heart Jeff Bridges is ok in this, nothing more, and definitely won the oscar because he's Jeff Bridges and hadn't won before. Nothing else really to recommend about this one. Maggie Gyllenhall is a fine looking and extremely bendy limbed woman. The music is ok, plot is predictable, Robert Duvall is pretty good in his small role. Meh. 4/10
  3. Cowdenbeath - Spartans Merger Can highlandcowden quite believe this news?
  4. Jesse James - Last Rebel of the Civil War, by TJ Stiles Fascinating account of Jesse James time as a confederate guerilla during the civil war in anarchic Missouri (he committed some particulalrly racist, cowardly and brutal murders during this time) to the more romantic notion of him as a Robin Hood-like train and bank robber later in his life. It portrays Jesse as quite a conflicted man, paranoid, bitter amd filled with hatred for unionists and the detectives that pursued him as well as a humorous and literate man who purposely created his image as a noble bandit in the press. Excellent book, it really makes me want to watch 'The Assassination of Jesse James' again.
  5. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Ramona
  6. Hopefully going to see Spoon at King Tuts on Valentines Day.
  7. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - If Love Is the Drug
  8. Steve Earle tomorrow night.
  9. Just bought tickets for next year's Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. It was amazing this year. The headliners for 2010 announced so far: Pavement, The Pixies, and Wilco.
  10. Was about an hour too long. You're right though, it could've been a lot better.
  11. The Men Who Stare At Goats What a mess. A poor attempt to string together a pointless plot out of a book that, whilst having funny moments, could never have been turned into a film. They've got Jeff Bridges doing his Big Lebowski thing and George Clooney doing his O Brother Where Art Thou thing and Ewan MacGregor in for some Star Wars jokes and it just doesn't work. I'm giving it 3 marks because there were about 3 funny moments. 3/10
  12. Yo La Tengo on Friday night at the ABC. Who's with me?
  13. Didn't bother going to the Ironworks to see them. They were good at the Raigmore a couple of years ago. Now THAT was a sweaty gig. Going to see Edwyn Collins in Inverness on Monday night. Looking forward to some Orange Juice material.
  14. The Feelies - Slipping (into something) 6 minutes of jingly jangly coolness.
  15. Moon I think Sam Rockwell isn't recognised enough. He's very good. Here he plays a lone moon based astronaut on a 3 year mission who encounters another version of himself. Together he and himself struggle to find some answers about what his mean company bosses have done to him. Unsettling music and Kevin Spacey in his best role in years as the voice of a computer add to the atmosphere. 8/10
  16. I'll agree with that. I was on the pitch at the end joining in the celebrations a couple of years ago despite having no knowledge/interest in the sport. I played shinty in school but was far too chicken. I used to volunteer to go in goals after getting a stick round my neck but then I just became shooting practice. It was pointless, all the talented players would hit shots from the 30 yards and before you could see the ball it was heading right for your eyes. An insane sport.
  17. The Decemberists - Yankee Bayonnet (I Will Be Home Then)
  18. How did Stone play? Gotta love Stone Gossard.
  19. So what's the deal? Have they pulled out of the 3rd division altogether?
