  1. He wasn't sacked for failing to keep us in the Championship. He was sacked for having us joint bottom of League 1. You missed the point.
  2. If his is the best cv we receive I'll be shocked. Then again it's Airdrie. I'd have him back at Stranraer in a moment. It was great when he was here. It's a hero's journey for any manager trying to keep Dumbarton in the Championship.
  3. Must say, they all looked like they were treating it like a kickabout, no shape, little indication of desire...well, maybe some from Clyde. Small clubs getting a few extra quids in. Big clubs , mostly, running over smaller clubs as some extra pre-season tuning up. And the sponsor's name splattered all over this pile of ....... Does the Scottish League Cup deserve better than this.
  4. "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. A story of loneliness, and the life-changing power of kindness. A real feel good read. It's set in Glasgow.
  5. Well, it's all good scoring armfuls against Newton Stewart, Cumbernauld, Dunragit....... But 0-2 to Stirling, and 1-3 against Ayr isn't so wonderful. Time was, this could be discussed intelligently on the unofficial forum, without someone immediately lapsing into the "You're so negative....".
  6. Grant Anderson : 4 goals scored in first half of season. 4 goals scored in 2nd half of season.
  7. You do have to back up what you say with a little more than 'shrewd'. I haven't actually right now been and re- checked on soccerbase, wikipaedia etc to see where they've been, what they've done, goals scored.... , but over the weeks, at the time, I've noted that there seems to me to be rather a lot of guys being signed who don't seem to have done much at all. So those shrewd signings are going to have to start performing rather quickly. Which is why I made the comment about Turner and Anderson.
  8. I increasingly get the feeling that a long, hard season lies ahead, with a lot of weight on the shoulders of Turner, Anderson.....
  9. I don't care what anyone says..., I'll always remember Jubblies.., or Jubilees, their proper name. That big pyramid of frozen orange juice that lasted forever.
  10. I remember when the Gaumont Cinema in Sauchiehall St got burnt out in 1972. Insurance job as I recall. I shared a top floor flat in Southpark Avenue, in Kelvinbridge with 5 other students. Didn't know what was on fire at the time, but it certainly lit up the night sky. Only found out recently that Mackintosh's home for many years was just up the street from us. I can't really understand how the School of Art has gone up so quickly, and so completely.
  11. I hadn't realised he was on loan to East Kilbride, so I guess this is just the formal release by Alloa.
  12. Bland. About as appealing as a can of brown paint from Poundland. ( I'm a great supporter of Poundland, just not for this )
  13. Going by some of the comments on here before he left us that he was too slow.., he only played a few games for Alloa at the beginning of last season, was on the bench for months after that, and not named in the squad for the latter part of the season... Doesn't look too promising. And besides, Farrell wants his own team, with no reminders of the better days when he wasn't here.
  14. Andrew McDonald signs... http://www.stranraerfc.org/index.php/77-latest-news/1176-mcdonald-signing
  15. Scored 13 times this season. Looks remarkably like a loss to me. S'truth, what are we offering these players ? 5 bob a week, and buy their own fish suppers at away games ?
  16. No Clan Dew, or Scotsmac..... . Rather poor form , that.
  17. In the end , it's not a 'simplistic argument' when a majority of the electorate are dissatisfied, and demand change. In this case, it's renationalisation. In the 1990's, rather a lot of people were in fact OK with British Rail, despite decades of under investment in the network, particularly the rail infrastructure. Aside from the ideology of privatisation ( private = good, public service = bad )..., a specific objective of the Conservative government then was to avoid public investment in the rail system. And so they privatised the lot. Responsible for the infrastructure they made Railtrack Plc. In subsequent years, due to under investment there were several high profile fatal rail accidents. The aftermath of these basicaly busted Railtrack. They approached the ( by then Labour ) government for a bail out. As this involved immediate matters of public safety, the government made money available. Railtrack promptly used this money to pay their shareholders a dividend. The government then forced Railtrack into administration, and created the publicly owned Network Rail to run the infrastructure. The reality is that privatisation is essentially a lie. The whole idea of private companies is that their shareholders invest in a risk. If the company does well, the shareholders profit from the increase in value of their shares, and from dividends. If the company does not make a profit, then the shareholders lose money. The franchise system allows the train operators to walk away when things don't go well. That means that privatisation has failed. It is indeed quite simple, not the smoke and mirrors stuff that you put up.
  18. 'The Descent of Man' by Grayson Perry. Some interesting stuff in there about what is maleness, and masculinity. And it's received great reviews from the professional reviewers. Very strong feeling of metropolitan London. fashionableness about the whole thing, though, and capitalising on Perry's TV appearances. Next book for me will be one I picked up in a local Waterstones today, and read a couple of pages. 'The LIfe of Leonard Cohen' That should cheer me up.
  19. He never has been nicey, nicey. Always has been very snippy when even the mildest questioning, from anyone, about his authority takes place. As any one even halfway familiar with his efforts at Swansea, and Liverpool will know.
  20. I wonder how, or if, the identification of a fridge as the immediate cause of the fire fits in with a previous record of unexplained power surges in this building. Devices overheating, smoking. I've had fridges, electric cookers etc that died of old age. Never had one that burst into flames of its own volition.
  21. Just to expand on that list of landlord MP's, here is the full list of MP's who voted. Scroll down. Every single member* of the current Cabinet voted against forcing landlords to ensure that properties they rent out are fit for human habitiation. *bar Liam Fox, not present (?) https://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201516/cmhansrd/cm160112/debtext/160112-0003.htm That is... Theresa May, Damian Green, Philip Hammond, Amber Rudd, Boris Johnson, David Davis, Michael Fallon, Jeremy Hunt, David Mundell, Alun Cairns, James Brokenshire, Pritti Patel, Karen Bradley, David Gauke, Patrick McLoughlun, David Lidington, Justine Greening, Greg Clark, Michael Gove, Chris Grayling,
