Squad for autumn internationals. No wp nel or Matt Scott are surprises. Ross ford still there sadly isn't. He was an utter liability for embra again at line out v quins. Nice to see Watson n Hoyland in the squad and wouldn't have minded seeing Kinghorn n Bradbury integrated as well. Would also always have Harley in there, one if our most underrated forwards.

Also why is every other position listed alphabetically, except for hooker where f'n Ford gets listed before Brown?

  2. I think the big difference with Glasgow is that there are not real standout players, in that you could take out any starter and there is a replacement who is more or less just as good. This is great in the league as you can rest players, and it doesn't affect the standard the team is playing at, however when it comes to Europe, the Irish and Welsh teams bring in their internationals ans suddenly they are much better teams. Its the argument the English and French were making when they revised the cup as if you are not worried about a league position you just have your best players playing in Europe.

Now Niko and Nakarawa have gone, we dont really have any big game players left in the middle of the park. We have Seymour, Sarto, Hogg and Bennett out in the wider channels but we dont seem to have anyone in the forwards with any spark. Grey is very good at doing the donkey work and the hard yards (as are a lot of the forwards) but we are lacking a big ball carrier in the back row that can break tackles and make something happen. It used to be Strauss but he has really gone off the boil since he made his Scotland debut, Harley does do it at a Pro12 level, but dont think he is good enough for the level above. As soon as we start to get dominated up front it all becomes a bit predictable and safe which gives the opposition defence a chance to drop players out to cover our backs

  3. There is only really Lashley, Galloway and EC3 that I could see interesting WWE, as they have already signed up everyone else over the last year in Aries, Rude, Joe etc

It would be epic to see Broken Matt Hardy and Senior Benjamin delete people in the WWE as it is the best thing in wrestling at the moment, but you cant see them giving them free reign in the creative aspects.

  4. I think Italy were favourites as well prior to pulling out. They have plenty of other stadiums they could have used in Rome, and all the rest of the stadiums are in place already so not as if much money would have been involved, it is more ensuring the use of them during the football season.

I think its more a case of they dont want to be seen to be bidding on a global event when they have pulled out of the running for the olympics

  5. I would say Edinburgh have improved slightly but not much. They have gone from having a very attack minded team trying to outscore the opposition but usually failing, to a very tight team trying to concede less than the opposition and usually failing.
Hopefully hodge can get the balance right

  6. I think Nel will be a shoe in for a spot in the starting team, but apart from that I think we could struggle to get any others in the team. I cant see anyother front row players getting close to the team, maybe dickinson might be in the squad, although Ford is a Lion already, maybe he has the same pictures of the Lions selectors as the scottish management.

2nd row, one or maybe both the Gray's are in with a shout, although Itoje and Kruis are definetly the first choice, and you have Lawes as well in the mix

Back row - Apart from Hardie I cant see anyone being near the squad, although the 2 welsh open sides may force him out

Backs, Laidlaw will probably get in the squad, and end up captaining the midweek team but I would see this being a more political choice. Russel would be an outside choice at 10, but Sexton, Ford, Farrell, Biggar are probably ahead of him.

Centers - Dunbar, Taylor, Bennett are all outside bets, but given how Gatland will want to play, not sure any fit in. Davies and Roberts are show in for the squad along with Henshaw

Wings - I think Seymour will get in the squad, and maybe the only other Scot to start. Other wings are in with a shout.

Hogg vs Halfpenny - Halfpenny is bound to get in the team unless he picks Farrell at 10 or 12 as they will need a goal kicker. Hogg should make the squad though as it would be a travesty if he was left out altogether

  7. They need to change the Tue regs. It should be changed to yes you can use them if you have a problem, but you cant compete while taking them, which I bet would cut it down.

I mean taking it for hayfever or a chill is just an excuse for any advantage you can get.

  8. Froome's got 46 seconds back at the first check point, Quintana has hammered the first section (by his usual standards) as he is 6th overall at checkpoint 1

Edit - up to 1min 33 at 2nd Checkpoint. Needs another 2 minutes before the finish, cant see him getting it

Another Edit, Froome wins the stage, but more important only 2 min 16 infront of Quintana.

Will be interesting last with Froome needing 1 min 21 tomorrow

  9. Im assuming that Cotter must have something lined up for next summer, either that or the rabbit skinning hasn't gone down to well with the SRU.

I thought it smackd of Jobs for the boys when he took over at Glasgow (after Lineen was forced out to make room) as when he was Scotland backs coach we played some of the worst rugby I can remember and couldn't score tries, but he has been a revelation at Glasgow. I thought the team couldn't improve on where Lineen had taken them, but I was wrong. Might have been the case of SRU offering him the job before a big club down south, or in France came knocking.

Dissapointing to see Cotter go as I think he has been excellent and exactly what was needed, but also hopeful Townsend can move us on. Be interesting to see who Glasgow get in, whether its a local or we get someone from the southern hemisphere?

What's the story with how long a referee will play advantage before it is over? Watching the Hurricanes Chiefs game and Chiefs had advantage after a knock on, after three or four passes they got nailed in a tackle and he brought it back for the scrum from which they have totally dominated the next 10/15 min possession. I get that they could have had the scrum straight off but how long is reasonable for the advantage to be played?

Its different for a Penalty advantage compared to a scrum advantage. On a knock on you would get probably to the next breakdown or if you have gone more than 5m past the advatage line. 3 or 4 passes if you haven't crossed the advantage line isn't really an advantage.

On a penalty the advantage can last quite a while, ie 2 or 3 phases depending on whether it looks like you will score or not

So played everyone outwtih St Johnstone, Celtic and Moterwell in the last 10 years
  13. I would like to put it down to the fact that Froome and Sky target the TdF each year and don't seem to have any interest in the Giro or Vuelta. The majority of the other riders are going to be at a disadvantage in that they are racing much more, don't have the training, resting, backroom staff etc that Froome does and also the whole Sky team are all geared towards TdF whereas other teams don't have that focus. They are not coming in tired from riding in the Giro, or worrying they wont be ready for the Vuelta.

My assumption is that Nieve, Henoa etc would have been training specifically to keep Froome in Yellow in the alps, hence why they were strong in those climbs, would Sky with all their resource have them in the team given this was there only purpose? You look at a lot of the teams, and they have a spread of different types of riders, dedicated sprinters and lead out guys, TTers, climbers, guys that will get in breakaways, teams with 2 guys as team leaders etc - Sky don't they have team to ensure that Froome wins and that is the focus. There is no one trying to get in breakaways, no one looking to win a sprint finish etc.

Either that or he's a doper, but either way Sky bossed it an no one else looked like getting close.

My biggest disappointment was that no one tried to attack earlier, from the few attacks there were, these were all on the last few km of the final climb of the day. There needed to be earlier attacks to put the pressure on Sky, if one of the GC attack on the 2nd last climb for example that would have weakend the sky train, but no one seemed willing to give it a go.

  14. I had been thinking about the Sky team, and as quite a few will be representing or have represented GB at the Olympics and other countries as well I am assuming, would some of them not having been caught out by now? Plenty are also competing on the track as well, so surely there is testing there as well.

In saying that though did Armstrong not compete at the Olympics at some point? I know he won a medal at some point but not sure whether he actually competed during his TdF winning days

  15. Cant believe the form Cav is in this year, after spending some time with the GB track team. I thought he was pretty much done the last couple of years as one of hte top sprinters but has been amazing this year

He was the 10 out of necessity in a dire era. He wasnt much of a passer was slow and was bordering on cowardly defensively. In recent times weir, russell, Horne, jackson have all played far better (heathcote is also probably better as is Hastings jr) and prior to him toony, chalmers and Rutherford were miles better. He was a good pro12 stand off and a fine kicker but he should never have been an international. I dont blame him and he took some unnecessary abuse but we just had no 10s at time (was even talk of mikey blair going to 10 n cus at 9) ultimately if he was in his prime now he would be nowhere near the Scotland set up. Tbf he is excellent on pro 12 commentary decent insight and a good sense of humour.

Have to agree he would get nowhere near the team now given the options we have, but at the time we had no other options at 10. Not his fault as it lookd like he always did his best, but just wasn't good enough

  17. Japan are 2 places below us in the world rankings, both games were potential banana skins, but we've come out of them with 2 wins, which given where we have been the last few years is a huge positive.

A good portion of this team, played the 14/15 season, then straight into the world cup training camps, WC, then season 15/16 without a decent break. They could all do with a month or so off, but they are going to get a week or so and be back in for pre-season training
