  1. I'd imagine we will indeed go out and sign another 'keeper, not because it makes sense - it doesn't - but because it's what teams do.

The new strip does not look up to much. It almost seems to be a pre-requisite for entry to the shirt sponsorship draw that companies must not, under any circumstances, have decent logos.

I'll wait and see how the away one looks - and whether the shorts are red or black - before considering a purchase for my son.

  2. I go to a hell of a lot more games than you do. Most seasons I get into double figures or at least close to it.

    So there. :ass

Double figures? Come on Truthy. I honestly can't remember you commenting on a single game you were actually present at last season.

That's not to slag you off. If I lived in Milton Keynes, I don't suppose I'd have got to any at all. I wouldn't imagine I'd go out of my way for the football and would just hope to catch the odd game when up visiting family. Indeed, that would be even less likely over the last couple of seasons when the card over the festive period has been wiped out.

Come on, list all the matches you've watched recently. We won't think any less of you - honest.

  3. All I can remember Brannigan saying about him was that he was a good player but lacked a heart. A statement I would say is 100% true. What else was said that people are taking issue with?

Publicly announcing to fans that the player "lacks heart" isn't particularly kind or judicious. KB also repeatedly said in a Radio interview that Weatherston wasn't "the answer". His lack of praise for the player when he scored that hatrick at Morton was also conspicuous.

So much for the public undermining, but there were also rumoured allegations of concerted bullying and an apparent obsession with Weatherston's middle class background and education.

Now, obviously, I don't know if such allegations are founded or not, and although I like Weatherston, I don't feel he contributes as much as he should.

The suggestion that KB was not a great boss for Weatherston does not however, strike me as too unreasonable.

  4. On the contrary, I'm surprised that a team as big as Airdrie are looking at him!

In all seriousness, i reckon top half Division 2 is his level now.

This sounds harsh, but I fear you're maybe right.

He does have real qualities and I was never one of those that's torn into him over the last season. He has a subtlety of touch which is not in-keeping with the Desperate Dan appearance, perhaps best illustrated by the deft lay-off for Conroy's winner at Raith last year.

However, teams cannot afford to employ (and field) front players who virtually never score goals. Of course there's more to the role than this, but two league goals - both against a relegated team - for a player who spent so long on the field is simply not good enough. Confidence was clearly a factor, but it got ridiculous at times. Against Stirling in February, he had the worst miss I've ever seen in the flesh - I watched Iwelumo's on TV - and his overall contribution diminished as the season dragged on too.

By all accounts, he's a nice guy and I was sorry to hear that he skipped the end of season lap of honour, because he's been so wounded by the slagging he's received. He could still be a valuable player for someone at this level, but he needs to add goalscoring on a remotely consitent basis to what he does, or he doesn't justify being picked.

  5. Exactly. I've said all along, if you take away Weatherston's pace he is a mediocre player at best.

Well yes, but who's planning to take away his pace?

I'd agree that without it, little would remain, but he's got it and it's quite a weapon. I'm not desperate that we keep him, but I'd like us to.

Playing as a striker, he can punish any defence that plays a high line and if this forces teams to defend deep, then that can present chances for others. Out wide, he can beat players, simply by pushing it past them and chasing it.

Now far too often, the finish or final ball is lacking, but again as we've observed often enough, if he could ally such qualities to his pace, he'd be well out of our league.

I still remember how he terrorised McQuilken in that opening 3-3 game a few years back on his league debut for St Johnstone. I'm a little disappointed he didn't turn it on more often for us, but dismissing him for only having one attribute is harsh. I can think of plenty of Queens players down the years who have had one less.

  6. As a matter of interest, to what extent do you think the fans have "carried the cost of mismanagement"?

Alright, I'll change the original comment to "given the extent to which the fans have been asked to carry the cost of mismanagement".

If their efforts really do amount to a drop in the ocean, than as Flash says, that's more a reflection of the size of the ocean that's been created, than anything else.

Factually, I've no great argument with what you're saying - your command of the facts will outstrip mine.

The tone is important though. Rae described the fundraising as "reasonable" at one point and your dismissive words (whether they're intended that way or not) can be similarly insulting. I take no personal offence as I've virtually done sod all to help, but that's to miss the point.

We know that the club tore itself apart a bit last season and that a greater degree of unity is needed. Comments which point to the relative insignificance of very hard work, carried out by entirely well meaning people, do not serve this purpose.

  7. Yes, that was my initial reaction. They seem to be rather over sensitive.

I can't help feeling the club have missed a trick with the OAP price as well, when a slight reduction would have sent a message to some of the 'lost' fans.

Yes, I'm glad they've done away with the different prices for 12-16 year olds.

That was a PR problem last year, but the biggest one concerned the 67% increase in the charge for OAPs. A goodwill reduction on that one might have been nice, but I don't suppose it's easy to set them at an appropriate level when crowd sizes can fluctuate and are at the mercy of a lot of variables.

£17 for adults is, in itself, ridiculous for what we get to see, but in the context of the division, a relatively small increase last year, followed by a freeze this, is pretty reasonable.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I find this " the club will carry the cost" stuff a bit irksome, given how much the fans have recently carried the cost of the club's mismanagement.

  8. Queens season ticket prices revealed:

    http://qosfc.com/new...aspx?newsid=719

"It has been decided to retain prices at the same levels as last Season. Since January of this year VAT has been set at 20% an increase of 2.5%. This additional cost is being carried by the Club.

As explained above the Club will carry the increased VAT charge which is effectively a reduction in the price of admission for both pay at the gate and Season Tickets."

Does anyone else think they protest too much with this stuff?

  9. I see where you're coming from but paying wages that high at our level is scandalous regardless of how good the player is. Cutting the wage bill is the quickest way to reduce our outgoings. The level of our ambition appears to be maintaining first division status if this can be done cheaper then it's a no brainer.

    Yes, you're right.

Despite the glory of the cup run, which just served to accelerate the overspending, we never, over the period, mounted any serious title challenge, even before we consider what any stadium implications would have been.

It was ridiculous that people good enough at football to attract barely a couple of thousand people, could walk away with wages like those suggested.

I know that none of us - SD apart - really know what individuals earned. Simple calculations based on our outgoings, which wages dominate, would however strongly suggest that our higher earners probably were indeed making £50-60,000 per year.

    Crazy and unsustainable.

The defence that other teams were doing it too, is not a good one.

  10. Corcoran's performance against Motherwell in the Scottish Cup in 2006 was possibly the best individual display I've ever seen from a Saints player.

I've got vague recollections of him running riot, out wide in a game on a Saturday night Sportscene. I'd imagine it's that cup-tie I'm thinking of.

I take it from subsequent career developments that such performances were rare?

  11. Queens have offered to take part-time winger, full-time lazy b*****d Mark Corcoran off our hands after Derek Adams wants to let someone go before we add to the squad.

He would have been at St.Mirren the same time as Gus?

He looked an exciting player a few seasons ago. It's funny how it seems to desert some guys. Maybe Gus can get it back for him.

  12. According to Gus:

"We`ve sorted it all out today to train at Glasgow Green again. Everything`s in place and we`re itching to get started."

How's this possible? KB was goin to exercise all his power in banishing us from Glasgow Green's Milk and Honey.

I simply don't understand how we can still be allowed to train there.

  13. He was at Pollok - I saw him against St Cuthbert Wanderers in the 2007 Scottish Cup and he was honking, making a complete arse of the only two things he had to do all afternoon

Funny to think between leaving us and "trialing" at you he had a trial at Celtic and was offered a three month contract - only to turn it down :o

Was his dad not his agent or something? He had an utterly delusional idea of his son's worth.

That game against St Mirren was a sore one. We'd been top and had the chance to go back there as we neared December. Our failure in that match sent us backwards.

  14. Corr was another whose head screwed his career up. He was a good keeper before he came to us but a horror fumble in his first game saw fans lose confidence in him (plus Scott was a crowd favourite). He just went to pieces after that. I could almost forgive everything for that performance the night we beat Dundee on penalties though. He was magnificent that night.

The Corr situation was odd. I thought he was a cracking 'keeper for Stranraer and was delighted when we signed him. He started badly and was really not helped by McCall's attitude thereafter in criticising him publicly and dropping him.

In that Dundee game I was really pleased for him. He was the hero of the shoot-out, but showed how stressed he'd been by reacting angrily at the end. Even in that game he got lucky. In extra time, he missed an easy cross, but got away with it as it eluded attackers. I was sad that it never happened for him with us. He was on the verge of being very good in his career, before it all got away from him. I suppose it shows how important confidence is in football generally, and goalkeeping particulaly.

  15. I would wholeheartedly disagree though about the goodwill part whilst he was fit. When he was playing and interested Goram was generally happy and willing to do anything he was asked in the name of club pr. , but n

My meaning was unclear. What I meant was that when fit, he didn't offer enough to justify signing him. I was referring entirely here to his performances on the field, which while not dreadful, were not in my view that good.

  16. I can't remember many games in which he featured bar one. It was against St Johnstone at home, they had been relegated the season before. We drew 0-0 and I put it mainly down to an utstanding game by Goram. He had his cons but I think it's a tad unfair on him to say he was uninterested on the park.

I remember the game you're talking about, but I don't think I'm merely being selective in failing to recall him doing anything that notable.

My memories of him involve his failing to dive for anything near the corners. He could still command his box well, make good decisions and position himself, but he no longer made great saves.

I'm not saying he performed disastrously - he didn't.

However, he was no better than what we had (Scott), much more expensive and the sort of guy I'd rather not see my club employing.

  17. Goram had class and presence. McKenzie certainly does not possess the former, although may have some of the latter.

A totally separate and I suppose irrelevant discussion, but I wish we'd never had anything to do with Goram.

Some have reservations about a new director who once supported Rangers, yet here we employed a guy who was photographed among terrorist trappings and wore an armband in memory of a bigoted brute.

Back to the football argument, he was way past it and pretty uninterested on the field, apparently reluctant to get his kit dirty.

He was clearly signed as some statement of intent on the back of our promotion, but he exploited the club's goodwill in playing no part off the field once injured and he'd offered little when fit.

I know others see it differently, but I wish we'd never gone near him.

  18. As regards the 'keepers, I'd prefer Hutton to MacKenzie on balance, but not by miles. Whilst Hutton is younger and in many ways more capable, there's no doubt that he has flaws too. I don't see us as being massively disadvantaged by having MacKenzie next season.

While the guy from Albion Rovers will need tp prove himself at this level, I like the sound of a defender who can put together a run of appearances by avoiding injury and suspension. I suppose it's the type of signing we need Gus to be making. Of course, there's an element of gamble about it, but I'm fairly confident that he knows what he's doing.

    For now.

  19. During Simmons' first spell with us, he didn't do much to inspire, but I don't really understand the ferocity of the antipathy towards him. If he can be a decent passer on his day, I'm happy enough to see him here.

It's possibly hopelessly naive, but for now, I'm content to see what Gus does and then start moaning like hell in August.

As for Bowey, anyone who watched him could see what his limitations were.

That however, doesn't prevent him from being one of our most important players over the last decade. I don't think we've had another midfielder that I'd swap for his 2003/04 vintage.
