  1. Apologies in advance for the pedantry but we didn't play Airdrie in 85/86. They were a division above. We played them early in 86/87 after promotion though I think.

We did indeed play Airdrie on the opening day of the '86/'87 season.

At half-time, their two subs came over to where I was standing with a pal and his brother and young nephew in the cowshed (We'd planned on changing ends at half-time, but had been confronted for the first time by the segregation fence) and asked about the "fuckin' score in the Rangers gemme". Unfortunately, we couldn't yet tell them about the two nil defeat Rangers were heading for with Souness getting sent off on his competitive debut.

As for my first full season, despite attending a handful of games over the previous five seasons, my first as a regular was in '81/'82. The division included St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Motherwell and Hearts and we got relegated, having only just come up. Our season included a nineteen game spell without a win, the type of run which eluded even Chisholm.

I went to those games with the boys next door who were a little older and then once at Secondary, went with mates from there. I drifted away a bit during my mid-teens, but came back before leaving school and have gone to home games when possible ever since. This has included spells living elsewhere, so I've been far from ever-present, but I've always gone when I can. For the last twelve years or so, that's been virtually all the time, at least for home games.

  2. Enjoyed our reminisce about the Hearts 83 game . Good that others have similar memories. Do you mind if I ask what your memories are of your first Qos game . Of course, other posters recollections as well would be good.

1976 against this weekend's opponents at Palmerston. We got a 2-2 draw, having trailed 0-2.

Don't remember much other than my dad being the only person in the main stand to get up and cheer when Dundee scored. I went in the huff with him.

  3. FWIW, I can understand both parts here.

The assumption that collections within the ground would be directly on behalf of the club seems reasonable enough to me. Similarly, the reluctance some express on here to donate money straight into the 'black hole' which had been created makes sense to me too.

I sometimes think we're all guilty of thinking that sad cases like ourselves who spend more time than is sensible thinking, talking, reading and writing about Queens, are representative of everyone who cares.

    We're not.

There'll be plenty, even among the regulars, who take much less day-to-day interest. Otherwise, between QOSMad and here, we'd have over a thousand Queens fans posting.

In fairness to SD, his latest post is so measured and reasonable that I'm starting to think he's maybe not actually Robert Mugabe at all.

  4. Hmmmm

The stats don't lie. Morton are struggling with the loss of Tiddzer, McCafferty and more recently Freddie B. Not to mention the availability of two goalkeepers who would have been star attractions at Billy Smart's Christmas Circus

    They look better here....

You should have gone back a further week.

That's when this hilarious and seemingly unstoppable slide kicked off.

  5. He's not good enough for the SPL. He's panicky when on the ball and has been guilty of shiteing out of challenges. Haride almost ripped his head off for the latter during a game at the start of the season.

I loved Burns as a Queens player, much morso than bloody Gibson.

I have to say that in the best part of a decade here, I never once saw him "shite out of a challenge". People said he was easily knocked off the ball despite the fact it never, ever actually happened, because of his slight build.

I did wonder if he'd have quite enough class for the SPL though and I can believe he's maybe just been found wanting a bit in this regard.

  6. I'd agree with this. No David Hutton, and while not the best in the league he most certainly is not hopeless. He's keen & has an eye for a potential quick breakaway. Badly at fault for Morton's 2nd yesterday but he will know that himself. Over the piece he has been good for us so far this season & I won't be giving him stick on the back of one bad mistake.

On balance, I like Robinson and I'm quite sure he's the better of our two current 'keepers.

He's frustrating though. He's made a couple of really stunning saves this season as well as plenty of decent ones. However, he's also been badly at fault for a couple now. Similarly, his distribution can be a real weapon at times and yet there's been spells when he can't keep the ball within the confines of the pitch.

I like him, but wish he'd cut out the brittle aspects. As with most of our players though, if he lost the flaws, he wouldn't be ours.

  7. it is just unfortunate that this season some of our journeymen have a shit attitude.

I know that plenty of Queens fans agree with you on this, but I honestly don't see huge attitude problems among our current lot.

I think there are concentration and confidence issues, particularly late in games.

I also think there's a pretty chronic lack of creativity about us from anywhere on the park.

As far as I can see though, the players are trying hard - they're just not that good.

  8. Maybe it is just my perception, but I think the young players offer better value for money. They at least look like they are giving their all, whereas certain others look like they are going through the motions. Maybe it is just unfortunate that this season we have a bunch of players who look like they have no professional pride and no real work ethic. It appears that the only reason they want to win is for the bonus money. Of course, that is always going to be the major factor, but I doubt whether that is the motivation of the best sportsmen. I'm not suggesting we will ever get the best, but we currently don't have any senior players like Burns or Bowey who look like they have more than money on their minds.

I see where you're coming from, but it's statistically unlikely that we'd have several young players on our books at once who would be fit for playing in Scotland's 2nd tier, regardless of how weak that level often looks.

Despite the ludicrous mythology surrounding the wonders KB pretended to work last year, the reality was that when we had to field several youngsters at once (despite some good individual performances) we really struggled.

It's profoundly sobering, but I suspect that the current lineup is not far from being as good as we can possibly muster.

  9. Nobody stays in the First division forever. They either go up or down and it is quite obvious where we are heading. Ten years must be one of the longest unbroken spells anyone has had.

I think having a team of mainly journeyman professionals is not the way forward. More younger players are needed. They cost less, generally try harder, but they make mistakes. Then again, the journeymen do that as well. The future has to be a team of mainly youngsters, with one or two journeymen to help. Not a team full of journeymen with a few youngsters.

Ten years is indeed a long time in a division which loses 20-30% of its sides every season. There was a time when it looked at least as likely that our exit would be upwards as downwards. That's most certainly no longer the case though.

As for the composition of the squad, I can't agree to be honest that the emphasis needs to be much more youthful. Nobody's going to claim that our current band of journeymen quicken the pulse, but the squad is just about competitive. It's unlikely in my view, if we were fielding several youngsters at once, that this would be the case.

I don't see solutions to where we are at the moment as a club, but I don't see all that much blame to be apportioned either.

Of course we spent too much for quite a while, but that isn't the cause as such, of why we're spending a lot less now.

It's just the reality of the situation and I suppose we need to deal with it.

  10. I share your pessimistic outlook.

One point that might surprise you is that last season's budget was not significantly smaller than that of the one before. Payroll costs were trimmed by around £70,000. KB may have had a small squad, but many of his players must have been on a hefty whack.

Sadly, the only way we're going to get out of this malaise is if the DGHP deal bears fruit or hundreds more punters flock to Palmerston this season to witness an exciting relegation battle. I'd expect with the winter ahead, we'll haemorrhage even more fans so my optimism is spent.

We're getting relegated sooner rather than later.

Bearing in mind the finances, I really don't think we can be too critical of McPherson. He's on a hiding to nothing. In fact, if we somehow manage to stay up this season, I'd say it would be a significant achievement on his part.

Almost forgot, have a good weekend. At least we won't lose today.

I wouldn't describe a £70,000 reduction as insignificant, but you're right. This is the first season following the necessarily radical surgery to the playing budget and the direct consequence of this is not hard to see.

I used to hold out hope on the DGHP front, but it's dwindled away to virtually nothing now.

I won't pretend to be 'in the know' because I most certainly am not, but it's been so slow moving that to this untrained eye, it appears to have ground to a halt.

I'd love to be proved wrong on this because I think it's our only real chance of salvation at this level in the longer term. As I say though, I just don't see it.

Still, by the next time we play, we'll be 3 weeks unbeaten - tremendous!

  11. The accounts cover 1 June 2010 to 31 May 2011, so yes the slashing of the wage bill is not reflected. We have made losses of over £1m since the cup final in 2008. This is clearly unsustainable and therefore it is hardly surprising that Gus has been given a wage bill of around £300k per annum less to work with than that enjoyed by Brannigan.

I suppose it represents progress of sorts.

    Still a worry though.

Even last season's budget must have been well down on previous years. Plenty players were still under expensive contract, but as I think KB might have mentioned on one or two occasions, our squad was small.

We're also not going to be able to sell a plot of land every year.

It really does seem that if we're going to have a side that we can just about afford to run, we're going to be absolutely hopeless at this level. It's not as if there are loads of bigger clubs in the divisions beneath us, yet we barely seem big enough to stay here much longer.

We might yet survive this season of course, but there's no real prospect that I can see, of us being significantly stronger next time, or the one after that.

Sooner or later (although I'm guessing sooner), it seems that a return to the second is inevitable.

  12. £455,528.

This years loss is lightly misleading in my eyes after the sale of some land (the grass bit next to car park) to Bill Hewitson for £120,000.

More loans again this year from the BOD, a further £89k from Davie Rae, a further £25k onto Billy Hewitson's loans and then £27,825 from Craig Patterson.

What period do these figures relate to?

I take it, they come from the last financial year ie. more or less last season?

Am I right in saying that the slashing of the wage bill in the summer isn't reflected here?

  13. This is the best Morton team I have seen in a long time & I have been going to Cappielow since 1973 so have saw the good times & lots of bad ones also. Could this really be there time for SPL football I think they have the players but We have to wrap Macdonald & Jackson in cotton wool & keep them both fit Tidser also will be a very important Player for us in the Midfield.

But when You look & the bench We have Weatherson, Campbell, & Bachirou itching to get back in the team after Saturdays trip to Dumfries We play Partick on the Friday Night then Hamilton, & Falkirk all within the space of a few short Weeks we really could be Top by a few points can we really keep going & stay top of the League I think & hope We can..biggrin.gif

It's up there with the IBM guy saying there wouldn't be the need for more than a handful of computers in the world, or Thatcher saying there'd be no female PM in her lifetime.

Ok, it's not, but it's funnier.

  14. It seems the 5-0 spanking by the Jags has fucked the Moron promotion train.

The embarrassment must be too much to take.

    Hey we started it.

Not long after the launch of hilarious threads like this one and the one on the SPL forum about whether or not they relished promotion, we put 4 past them in the first 35 minutes.

You guys merely stood on our shoulders.

  15. Monkey Tennis , you seem like a good , decent Queens. Please tell me why you would enjoy someones cynical outlook.

Well we all think we're realists, but I recognise that on the spectrum, I'm more of a 'glass half empty' type guy where Queens are concerned. That's what I mean by cynicism here.

Cynicism has a place, and I find myself more in sympathy with this outlook than that which might be characterised as 'Happy Clappy'.
