  1. Given that AJ is quoted as saying Semple still isnt in "peak condition" his recent absence was clearly down to his fitness too.

Fitness and match fitness are very different things.

Earlier in the season it was general fitness he was lacking, now I would say it is match fitness/sharpness he is missing. This will only come from playing games.

“Peak condition” or not he managed the best defensive performance we’ve seen for weeks against Dundee. Hopefully it’s lesson learned and Johnston can stop cutting his nose to spite his face.
  2. It's simply not true to say this season resembles last and the fact people are continuing to do so is really starting to bug me!

Last season we qualified out of the group stage of the League Cup before losing AET to Premiership St Johnstone, made it through two rounds of the Challenge Cup, made it to the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup before losing to Aberdeen and briefly flirted with the possibility of reaching the promotion playoffs.

Obviously the wheels fell off spectacularly, and we only scraped survival by the skin of our teeth, but there were some very good spells last season that seem to have been forgotten about due to the dreadful way the season ended.

This season, on the other hand, has been a shambolic shitshow from the word go.  Yes it has got worse around the same time of year as last season's downturn, but it never even got close to the "heights" of last season before doing so.

  3. Who's yer wide men then playing alongside Pybus & Wilson?

If we had decent wide men then Wilson and Lyon would probably be my first choice in the middle of the park. I’m afraid I just don’t see what Pybus brings to the table other than effort. Although granted that is more than some offer.

Murray and Petra are the only players we have that resemble actual wingers, although I don’t really think being played out wide suits Murray, plus he is injured.

Our options in midfield are pretty horrific however you combine it. At least with a midfield 4 Holt and Mercer can overlap to create a bit of width. This hasn’t happened enough in either the 4-3-3 or Saturday’s 5-3-2.

I’d be inclined to put Pybus on the right, Petra on the left with Wilson and Paton in the middle. On paper it’s a mix of endeavour and ability that might just prove greater than the sum of it’s parts.
  4. The most damning thing about today is that it was a vast improvement on the past few home games, yet it was still nowhere near good enough.

I think the change to a back 3 actually had the desired effect of improving the defensive side of things, none of the three CBs really put a foot wrong and there weren't any "heart in mouth" moments from the goalkeeper, but if you sit as deep as we did in the second half and invite wave after wave of attack then one of them is going to sneak in.  Dundee hardly battered us, but with continued pressure like they had it was inevitable they would score eventually.  And we all know what happens to this mob when they concede the first goal.

The problems arise from what is in front of the defence.  A piss-weak midfield, no width and a disjointed front two playing exactly like you'd expect a strike partnership playing together for the first time to play like.  We were so passive today.  Happy to sit off Dundee despite being the home team.  Happy to just launch the ball into areas and pass the responsibility onto someone else to deal with.  We're just lacking all the basic things a team needs; leadership, organisation, ambition.

I don't think this is necessarily the worst squad of players I've seen in my time and obviously in Dobbie we have the one trump card that could save us almost single-handedly.  The manager has proven on countless occasions now that he is incapable of getting the best from them and he needs to go tonight.  I genuinely feel like all a replacement would need to do is get us organised, and motivated and that would be enough to steer us out of trouble.

  5. The goalie situation is a total pisser, and in fairness out with Johnston’s control. The only thing he maybe could have done better was not sign someone directly from the club that had pinched McCrorie. That put the new guy on the back foot with us immediately, and unfortunately he hasn’t done a lot to change our opinion. Maybe he was the best on offer at such short notice, who knows?

Having a commanding CB would ease a lot of the goalkeeping woes I suspect. But we gifted one to Partick, and have the other rotting on the bench.

I was in favour of moving Brownlie on, based on the assumption Semple would step right in and we’d barely notice he was gone. However it is now looking like a huge mistake. Brownlie improved us upon his return last season dealing with things in the air that our shitebag ‘keeper was afraid to. I suspect he would do the same for this one.

If ever there was a clear indicator of how fucked we are as a club, that’s it right there. Mourning the loss of Darren fucking Brownlie!

  6. Received the joyous phonecall from my dad last night telling me he wasn’t going to bother with this, only to be dealt the massive blow of a text from my mate this morning asking if I wanted to go. At least this way I can suppress the suffering with beer.

My expectations are very very low today. Forget goals, or points. All I ask is that Johnston plays a coherent formation with our strongest players in their strongest positions.

If he doesn’t then it is a clear indicator to the fans that he is not seeing the same things they are, and he is not the man to get us out of the mess he’s created.

  7. It's not quite panic stations just yet but I think we are in trouble.  Pre-January you would have said that the midfield was our weak link and that we looked in reasonable shape elsewhere.  I now feel like we have problems in all areas of the park, and I just don't have the confidence in Johnston rectifying it.

We now have a much poorer goalkeeper.  That's just a plain fact.  How much poorer I don't know, he hasn't done a huge amount wrong but it's still a worry.

Leaking goals as we are at present is never a good sign, but it has been a time of upheaval for the defence with Brownlie and McCrorie moving on and Mercer and Kilday being out injured.  Hopefully we will see a more settled look to the defence in the next few weeks which should in theory improve things.  I'm not sure throwing Devine straight into the mix has been AJ's greatest decision but with Semple clearly well out of the picture it looks like something we are going to have to get used to.  Having an experienced partner in Kilday should at least help Devine (again in theory).

The midfield has at least improved with the addition of Wilson but it is still very workmanlike and lacking in creativity or natural wide men.

Up front, whilst we are scoring goals we still look disjointed and lacking in any clear structure.  The 4-3-3 system doesn't seem to suit any of our attack minded players, but is used more out of necessity due to our lack of wingers.  Worst of all, Johnston is not getting the best out of Dobbie which is absolutely criminal.

On paper I think we have a squad that is good enough to scrape 7th or 8th but I also think we have an arrogant and stubborn manager who is tactically weak and poor at motivating the players.  If we stick with him I think 9th is the best we can hope for.

You think Hamilton has pace ?

What games have you been watching ?

When fully fit I would back Doolan every time over Hamilton in both the pace and goalscoring stakes.

You don't seem to realise the value of a natural finisher and two stikers being on the same wavelength  without having to work at it.

Of course, the counter argument is that 'Big Sean' had no pace.

However, he had a great touch and natural instinct too as well as scoring  ability - he wasn't just a big guy to win headers.

His goal against Aberdeen is a fine example of his skills.

  9. With a mounting injury list and the unfortunate “red tape” issues with our new signings it wouldn’t have taken much for the manager to come out of today with nothing but sympathy from the supporters.

All he had to do was put our strongest team on the park, hope for the best, then blame the various valid excuses if it didn’t work out.

Instead what we got was borderline trolling with a lineup and formation that couldn’t have been more ridiculous if it was pulled from a hat.

There is no way back for me, he’s got to go.
