  1. I don't think there is a huge clamour for Goss to start games.  There is, or at least should be, a huge clamour for Johnston to start using substitutions more effectively though.

The conversation about Goss only really cropped up after he was brought on with minutes to play against Alloa, a crucial game in which we were losing 2-1 from around the hour mark.  Absolutely ridiculous.  Goss managed to get himself on the scoresheet against Raith after coming on with 10 minutes to play.  Granted the circumstances were different with Raith chasing the game on that occasion.  But it shows he has a goal in him if given the opportunity.

Fast forward a week and we are fighting tooth and nail to hold on to an impressive victory against the runaway leaders.  Does he make some changes to take the sting out of the game and slow things down, you know like every manager in the world would do?  Nah lets wait until after the equaliser then make a couple of changes that are going to have zero effect on proceedings.

Hope Robbie has the team really wound up for this one. Anytime we are not, we look very average. Hope we play a full strength team and wind our players up. Every game should be treated like a cup final when you are chasing a league title. The fantastic win by Arbroath against a strong Dunfermline team yesterday shows that there are no easy games.

  3. It's an almost impossible question for me to answer as there will have been so many over the years, plus my memory is shocking.  But a couple of great goals that sprung to mind initially.

I can't place the Derek Lyle goal people are talking about, but the one it brought to mind was his goal against Falkirk during the infamous week we beat Hibs, Rangers then Falkirk on our way to the playoffs.  An exquisite finish.

I'm not even sure I witnessed Willie McLaren's solo goal in the flesh as I can't remember any of the details or even the opponent.  I've seen the video though, and it surely has to go down as one of the finest at Palmerston.  Certainly in the "solo goal" sub-category of great goals.

It is maybe one of those moments that has been glamourised in my head over the years as I don't think I've seen it again aside from seeing it live, but I remember thinking Colin McMenamin's consolation strike in the game we were unceremoniously dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Brechin was as good a strike as you will see, and that it was a real shame the result and performance would over shadow it.

It would be no exaggeration to say Dobbie could have a top 50 all on his own.  Every goal of his is a thing of beauty, I don't think he has ever scored an "ugly goal".

Opposition goals are even harder to pick as I quickly try and erase them from memory.  The only one that springs to mind is a Tony Andreu goal in the 3-2 Challenge Cup defeat in which we were 3-0 down to Dundee Utd at half time.  It probably won't be that memorable for other people I think I just had the perfect vantage point to appreciate it.  He caught the ball perfectly and I was directly behind it's path as it arrowed into the top corner.  Great technique.

  4. My understanding is that there is nothing legally binding about a pre-contract agreement and that Livi had been burned before by players signing PCAs then changing their mind.  Hence their keenness to do the deal in January.

It was a smart move by both clubs really.  Obviously only the two clubs know the nitty gritty details of the transfer but from what has been said -

Livi got their man without paying an upfront fee (or perhaps they paid a "nominal fee"), instead they gave us a sell on clause and loaned him back for 6 months, and the loan meant we got to keep Dykes for as long as we were likely to anyway.

He then moved to QPR and both clubs earned record transfer fees.

Home to Hibs. Happy enough with that. A game we'll be expected to lose so no pressure. And given there won't be fans this season I really don't care about going out early this season and concentrating on the league.

I can't say I agree with that in the slightest.  Given our performances in the league the past few season, I'd take any excuse to concentrate on something other than the league.  I love the Scottish Cup and no matter the circumstances I want us to progress as far as possible.  Especially as we never progress very far.

What's the script with TV games for this round?  I suppose it's fair to assume both Celtic and Rangers will be shown.  If there is a third tie then we could be in with a shout.  Hibs and Jack Ross seem to be golden boys in the media this season, there is a ready written narrative for them with anything to do with Hibs and the Scottish Cup, plus they love to bang on about Palmerston being a "proper old school stadium" which would be the perfect venue for "the romance of the cup".

There seems to have been a transformation in the amount of effort being put in when we don’t have the ball. That was missing before. Previously felt like the only time we got the ball back was when it went out of play. Just hope they keep it going.

I think it’s a lot easier to put effort in when you have an idea what you are meant to be doing.

Previously there didn’t seem to be any real game plan in place rather than the manager putting what he felt was the best XI players on the park and hoping for the best. Professional pride can only get you so far. If you aren’t receiving any directions it’s human nature to be demotivated, and getting gubbed every week only adds to that. It’s probably why Pybus, Shields and Maxwell were getting all the plaudits early on because their game is to run all day regardless, whilst others who don’t have running as a main feature of their game were left disjointed and largely anonymous.

Now that we have settled on a system, we are presumably working on it in training which breeds familiarity among the players. Each player now not only understands their own role but also that of their teammates and the importance of each cog in the system. Understanding that encourages them to work hard for the team as they can see the benefit it brings to both the team and them as an individual. The more we win the more confident everyone becomes as well.

I don’t think Johnston is suddenly Guardiola-esque. All he’s really done is what he should have been doing from the start. Playing players in positions that play to their strengths. I often feel managers overcomplicate things by trying to be too clever.

  7. Pleasing result, looks like we’ve found a settled system that gets the most out of our limited tools, and are now benefitting from the confidence a few wins bring. This is all we can ask for as fans so fair play to the management team, just a shame it’s taken so long. We are one win away from notching as many victories in 2021 as we managed in all of 2020.

No surprise that the BBC coverage was an embarrassing tinpot affair.

What an absolute joke of a man Ray McKinnon is.

Hopefully we can put the money we got from George Galloway’s sponsorship and FIVE season tickets towards an extended contract for Connor Shields. He’s bound to have drawn attention after that showing.

To me that comes across as yet another tone deaf response to the current situation.  They still aren't taking ownership of their colossal f**k up and rather than easing tensions that comes across as a passive aggressive threat.  An "if you've got something to say lets go outside and you can say it to my face" type response.

If I was anything to do with the Trust I'd be telling them to shove it.  Which is exactly why I've nothing to do with the Trust right enough!

  9. For me describing a midfielder as “putting in a shift” falls into the same category as a goalkeeper being described as a “good shot stopper”.

Both phrases sound like they should be compliments, but actually they are just describing the bare minimum that should be expected from the role and suggests they are only capable of the bare minimum and bring little else.

Just a general viewpoint I have. Not based on today as I didn’t see it.

  10. That was a great day out, and a rare “big game” in recent times.

I remember our fans working through our entire repertoire of songs that day, which includes other irrelevant songs about Neil Scally’s hat, and burning down Gretna. The cameras just happened to pick up the Ayr United chant.

Agree with this. Don’t want to take anything away from the young guys but we shouldn't be having to search for a reason for a change in attitude of some of the others. That level of fight should be a given.

Absolutely, and if that was the reason then it probably is a one time only motivator and we’ll be back to square one in the next game.

  12. I wonder if it was the young lad in goals that has galvanised the group and forced them into showing a bit of fight last night?  I can't imagine the Galloway incident had much impact on the players, I'd be loathed to give him any credit even if it was a factor.  Either way something appears to have changed in the attitude of the performance last night, and long may it continue.

Even in the era of short term contracts and players constantly moving on you still get a great reaction to young players breaking into the team and doing well from colleagues who otherwise have little affinity with the club.  I'm a big fan of this.  I always remember the celebrations when Gavin Reilly scored his first goal for the club as classic example of what I'm on about.

2020 has been one of the worst years in our history, and this week has arguably contained some of the worst days so to end on a positive is a real relief.  It probably doesn't change things a huge amount, we are still in for a real struggle and face the same challenges on and off the park.  But Charlie Cowie and Tommy Goss have both cemented their names in folklore and provided moments that will be talked about in years to come, I'm delighted for both.

I don't have the answers either, but the arguments against were pretty unconvincing.

A major one seemed to centre on "what's the point of having a fan rep on board? What might they add?"  I think an answer has maybe just been provided.

I'm not sure a fan on the board would have made the slightest jot of a difference to this situation.  Someone has been pretty hellbent on allowing something incredibly daft to happen I'm not sure anyone could have stopped that.

I wonder if the opposition to fan representation on the board - a club position that actually had plenty of support on here - will continue.

I don't think fan representation on the board is workable given the current board seem so opposed to it and as you say it wasn't a hugely popular idea aside from the people pursuing it.

I'm not overly convinced by a total fan ownership model either, but it would be churlish to rule it out.

My view remains that "business-people" are best suited to running a football club, particularly one like ours with such a precarious financial position.  However, we are obviously seeing what happens when the sole focus is business at the expense of everything else.

It's a tricky one for sure, I certainly don't have the answers.

You believe wrong, the SLO are not the COVID officers. They do volunteer to do COVID checks at one of the entrances, which is mainly for the press. There are at least 2 other entrances in use (possibly three) which will have their own separate lists.

Okay well apologies on that one, last thing we need is false information getting spread but I did make it clear I wasn't completely sure.

I'm not sure what would be a better outcome for the club.  If the names of "the Galloway five" appear on one of these other lists then at least we followed some of the COVID protocols, albeit the club would still need to justify them being there.  If they aren't on the lists then I would expect the book to be thrown at us.

This is a ludicrous and simplistic theory, which I'm steadily coming round to.

It's as if nobody had the heart to turn him away on Saturday, resulting in this ridiculous mess.

It's just hard to believe that he was allowed to sit through the game with his family, conspicuously dressed as George Galloway, with nobody in the nearby Director's Box  questioning it, or foreseeing a problem.

Seriously, how the Hell did this happen?  It's a bit mind blowing.

I believe our SLO committee are the COVID officers and oversee who enters the ground.  They have a list, if your names not down you're not getting in etc. and they take temperatures and whatever else the current situation requires.

One of the SLOs, who I have absolutely no reason to doubt, posted yesterday that there was no mention of Galloway (or his family for that matter, although I don't think their attendance was known at that point) on "the list".

If the above is true, and like I say I fully believe it is, then whoever invited Galloway as their guest knew that what they were doing was wrong, but cracked on anyway.

Incidentally I am feeling pretty heartbroken for the SLO Committee right now.  I know all of them and from a supporters perspective you couldn't ask for better men for the job.  Well liked, well known, highly approachable and hugely passionate about the club.  What is expected of them is an absolutely thankless task.  Expecting them to drum up extra support for a club that doesn't give a flying f**k about their supporters.  They have put a power of work into the past few years (not sure how long the SLO requirement has been in force but from day 1 of that anyway), and for what? Countless hours and days worth of work dissipated.

Whilst I would consider myself a fairly "big" Queens fan (certainly a longstanding one as this is my 26th season following them), I am by no means a diehard.  As I had all but given up on the club of late I have been able to take a certain macabre enjoyment out of the last day or so's proceedings.  It is such a laughable situation I'd find it impossible not to.  Also there is a certain satisfaction in seeing some dislikeable characters get their comeuppance (granted that is yet to happen).

Obviously there is a very serious side to this as well, in addition to the public health implications.  The club means so much to a lot of people, and is a major part of their lives.  To be betrayed in such a fashion all for the sake of boosting the finances and ego of a very selfish group of individuals is absolutely galling.

There simply has to be change after this episode.

I honestly believe in Galloway's warped mind he believes that QoS will get 'unfairly' hammered by this and the fans will be disgusted with Nicola Sturgeon for this and for her refusal to allow football fans back. Thus giving him a cause and having the full support of the 1-2000 QoS fans and helping give him his ticket into the Scottish Parliament.

He thrives on controversy and tries to play people. And he's so out of touch these days he might actually believe that.

This was my thinking as well.

I also think his sudden interest in our football team was an attempt to worm his way into the hearts of the people of Dumfries by showing he is a man of the people and likes football just like me and you.  The joke is on him though as 99% of the population are completely apathetic towards Queens, and thanks to this sorry episode it is probably sitting at about 99.9%.

This for me is the crux of it.

I'll admit to struggling to find how Galloway, not to mention other family members, can be deemed able to attend.

Similarly though, if it's really as blatant and unequivocal a breach as Trogdor and others are saying, I'm really struggling to understand the level of stupidity required to show Galloway in.  I've disagreed with much that the board has done, but I certainly wouldn't consider them to be stupid people.  This just looks like such lunacy that I'm inclined to think there must somewhere be a little more nuance, or at least room to claim some.

I think you've answered your own question with the part in bold.  We may just have managed to crawl out of this one by making up some story about him being there in a professional capacity had he been there on his own.  I don't think that argument holds any water now it has been found to have been a family day out.  Even if we somehow get away with it by claiming he was there due to his sponsorship it sends completely the wrong message to the, already alienated, fans that the club will bend over backwards for you if you have money or a bit of clout.

I think the board have been extremely stupid and completely played by a known shyster.  They probably expected it to all go under the radar and have gone into full panic mode since the self-publicist took to Twitter with his antics.
