  1. Hangovers that last for days, I'll be 50 this year and play in a 6 a side league with a group of Dutch lads whose ages range from mid 20s to mid 30s, I'm still pretty fit and can complete with the youngsters on the field, last night we had our team night out, started with a Whisky tasting, then a meal, then lots of beers, I can see this hangover lasting till around Wednesday.

Thanks for the feedback @MONKMAN @stevieKTID, appreciated.

Will aim for Manhattan and see how we get on, really can't wait to go. Feel like I need to manage my expectations or something.

You'll have a great time, the first time I went It was clear I was a tourist - I kept getting in folks way ( hey I'm walking here 😁) my brain was struggling to take it all in.

I love when you get the first glimpse of the skyline from the taxi as you're passing through Queens/ Brooklyn.

Hoping to go for the first time at end of April with my other half. Been looking through the last 10 pages or so, and wondering what people's experiences with areas they've stayed have been?

I'm guessing somewhere in Manhattan for first visit would be best but we also lived in London for nearly ten years and I'm curious about other areas that feel 'local' with its own cafes and bars and stuff, with Manhattan and the main attractions being a train ride away. Or something. Might not be as simple as that of course.

I saw @stevieKTID stayed in Williamsburg a few years back, how did you find staying around there?

Was wondering even what Dutch Kills or Hunters Point would be like, facing Roosevelt Island and east Manhattan.

I really liked Williamsburg we got an air BnB on Skillman street in North Williamsburg, lots of bars and restaurants, even though it's been gentrified there were still areas that were a bit grittier - one minute you're passing hipster bars and art galleries then within a few blocks there's homeless people sleeping in tents, it still felt relatively safe - it certainly felt safer than the train I got from Glasgow back to Ayrshire last Saturday night when I was over visiting.

We chose Williamsburg because accommodation in Manhattan had become more expensive and we'd visited Williamsburg on one of our previous trips in 2013 and spent a lovely Sunday with friends there, on that trip we had stayed in an apartment on the Lower East Side on East 2nd street between Avenues B&C ( I believe that was officially in Alphabet City ) really liked that area as well quite a similar vibe to Williamsburg.

On our first trip we were in Midtown close to The Flatiron building and if it's your first trip I'd definitely be aiming to get accommodation in Manhattan, we've also stayed in Greenwich village which was also a really cool neighborhood.

Wherever you end up you'll have an amazing time, it's a fantastic city I'll need to get back over soon.

A Mount Rushmore of Kraftwerk would look cool AF.

I'll suggest it to the Germans.

It would have to be done in a stylised, angular almost abstract manner

    Made from Krautrock rock.

The problems with including anybody from Kraftwerk that firstly not many people know what they look like and secondly even when you do see what they look like it's pretty dull

That's why I'm going with Lemmy, Slash, Dolly Parton and Bootsy Collins

We'll all agree to tell Stevie Wonder he's up there too

Even more problematic is that he was only in Kraftwerk for a few months, it was an obscure suggestion but I love his work.

Seems interesting, so a quick search gave us this:

    https://www.iamexpat.nl/expat-info/dutch-expat-news/mayors-call-fireworks-ban-netherlands-after-busy-new-years-eve

Looks like a primary school and a retirement home caught fire and a historic chapel burned to the ground. It was an 11 y-o with the amputated hand, and he lost an eye too. Parents letting children play with fireworks explosives should probably have some strapped to them and lit (the child was lighting the fireworks).

My Dutch friend told me that you can buy fireworks at the age of 11 (sparklers) and at the age of 12 or 13 (her son's age) you can buy rockets. She lives in an obviously bam-free part of Holland as she couldn't understand my dumbfoundedness at allowing that age group to buy them.

    Bonkers.

The phycological damage it does to pets and wildlife really annoys me, one of the worst aspects is that folk will throw fireworks out their windows at passers by or worst still at the emergency services who are just trying to do their jobs, it's moronic in the extreme.

As for the "ban" it's what they call in Dutch a papieren tijger ( paper tiger ) basically something that is implemented but not really going to be enforced.

Before I moved here I came over for New Year and was shocked to read this in a guide book.

    What the f**k was that?

Some of the fireworks being set off recently have been like bombs going off, there's actually a ban on setting them off but the Dutch authorities didn't factor in having to police the situation and with it being the first real Nye post covid folk went even crazier than usual, it was utter carnage.

Lots of folk across the country suffering some serious eye injuries and I read one account of someone losing a hand, a school burned down and I'm sure there were a few fatalities across the country, sometimes the relaxed Dutch attitude has it's drawbacks.
