It's always the case that the team that holes the most putts wins (hi Captain obvious), Europe had numerous chances yesterday in a few of the games to win holes but didn't take them. Biggest example was Fleetwood missing back to back chances last night just after the turn that might have halted the comeback from the Yanks in that one. The big disparity in the average OWGR rankings between the sides has been starkly exposed this time. The Americans always have an advantage on that ranking, but the European teams have nullified it in the past by turning up and playing their very best stuff. Half the team are out of form which isn't going to get you anywhere. It's going to take something miraculous to prevent the US winning by 6 points or more, Europe won by 7 points in Paris, can see that being beaten here.
As Nick Dougherty just said, the best thing to happen to the US team was so many of the older guys falling away. They've lost guys like Zach Johnson, Bubba, Mickelson, etc, while Europe are still clinging on to folk of a similar age
I was just having a look at the European Tour rankings. Just to pick out a few... Westwood has played 12 tourneys this year. 0 top 10s. Fitzpatrick has 1 top 10 from 12 tourneys. Wiesberger had a 1st, a 2nd and a top 10 yet still needed another top 10 in the last tourney to clinch his place. Qualification period is too long imo, too many players in the team who racked up points early then managed to hang on despite playing shite fir most of the year.
He was the obvious choice, always been complimentary about Bryson going back to their college days. That was a shocker of a bunker shot from DeChambeau.
That there from DJ has been the difference, numerous times Europe have looked favourite to win a hole, only for one of the Yanks to roll in a longish putt.
Definitely smacks of both captains going with a plan. I didn't think Sergio would play all 5, but thought it would be 2 today and 1 tomorrow, especially with how he putted this morning.
Harrington already said everyone would play. Westwood and Poulter certs to drop out, Rahm and Garcia certs to stay in. Big shout to drop Rory, don't think Casey and Hovland played too badly. Dormie in the bottom match.
