  1. Superb stuff! Loved it! I was shouting at the TV highlights :D

Have to say, though, Froome looked to have been cycling within himself doing his domestique duties for Wiggans, so I'm glad he is being let off the leash. Will it be too late, though?

Well, I think that there's only 7 secs in the Spanish guy's favour and since they were both pretty well fucked after that effort, it could be down to who recovers best. I suppose that , because of the age difference in his favour, we could expect the Sky lad to come out on top..but then again, the Spaniard seems to be a tough cookie so I wouldn't bet against him.

It looks like the next few days could provide some entertaining viewing....bring it on !!! :)

  2. They do an Aqua version - for wet conditions surprisingly enough  . I'm not sure if this is a wee bit gimmicky, but I might check it out. Alternatively, I might stick my Conti Gatorskins on the bike when the really shite weather kicks in. Tyre choice is a bit of a dilemma as the seasons change, and they can be bloody expensive, too.

I missed the highlights last night as I was out at a gig. I'm trying not to check the progress so I can catch up later on so don't spill please :P

    Of course I won't spill, but don't miss it...best finish I've seen in a long time !!;)

  3. Was it not amphetamine and alcohol that were found in Simpson's system? Terrible waste of such a talented rider. The culture around cycling has served to severely tarnish what should be a very noble sport.

Try and get a look at "Death on the Mountain : Tom Simpson"..an excellent BBC 4 documentary which gives an insight into Tour cycling in the 60s.

ETA. Just checked and if you google the title, you can still watch this, albeit in six parts.

  4. Yeah, I remember the Festina thing quite well, and I recall that while there was som e "outrage" from outwith the sport, those on the inside seemed to accept the news with a " it's the culture thing " shrug.

So do we have to go back to the days when the guys were riding over cart tracks and welding their frames when they broke, to find a totally "clean" Tour winner ?

  5. Impressive stuff indeed and it's not until you see what these guys ar capable of,that you appreciate how super fit they are.

Not saying Hinault was guilty, but the sport has been tarnished with the amount of illegal drugs used by some of the riders and although it's all been cleaned up a bit now,I think it still goes on to a certain degree.

I'm quite happy to stick to me cup of tea and scone for a wee energy boost

Apparently Tommy Simpson, one of the first Brits to cycle as a pro on the Tour circuit, and who's death on Mont Ventoux during the '67 Tour de France was due, at least in part, to his taking "stimulants", had previously said that almost every cyclist in the peloton was "on some substance".

In fact, it seems that anyone who wasn't indulging, was viewed with suspicion and, in some cases, ostracized by the other riders.

  6. Last training night before I head off to Palma on Thursday,so decided to dig in as much as I could.

Did 28 miles in 85 minutes,so averaged just over 19.7 mph, which I was really chuffed at as a few climbs on circuit we did 3 laps of and in some parts a stiff breeze against us.

Mind you,my legs are gowpin now,but no bad for an auld b*****d like me!

Glad I took Droopers advice on the Cube, its a brilliant bike

I've been enjoying watching the Vuelta ( well, until the Athletics and Tennis coverage fucked it up ! ) and listening to the Eurosport commentaries and the insight provided by Sean Kelly.

Now you guys seem to be doing quite well with your distances and times, but how about the info that Bernard Hinault would train with his team mates for a couple of days, then go for a 220 km. spin on his own ! Kelly described him, in the nicest possible way, as "an animal"! :D

  7. Hoogerland and Flecha ended up finishing 16 minutes back - still 5 minutes ahead of Cavendish, Farrar and Rojas though.

It's a rest day tomorrow, so hopefully Flecha and Hoogerland will have a wee bit of time to recover.

It will be interesting to see whether, if Hoogerland is unable to continue, his team decides to sue the French TV company. After all he was in the breakaway group with every chance of increasing his points and keeping the polka dot jersey.

  8. If you like the Fantasy/Tolkien style stuff, then you might enjoy the following as some summer reading..there are a few books involved. but here goes:

The author of this series is a guy called Stephen Donaldson and the stories are in sequence, beginning with..

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.

    1. Lord Foul's Bane.

    2. The Illearth War.

    3. The Power that Preserves.

The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

    1. The Wounded Land.

    2. The one Tree.

    3. White Gold Wielder.

The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

    1. The Runes of the Earth.

    2. Fatal Revenant.

    3. Against All Things Ending.(2010)

    4. The Last Dark.

Quite a bit of reading but, if you like this type of stuff, you'll enjoy it.;)

  9. I've been looking to read some Oscar Wilde for a while now. After a quick search on Amazon recently it seems there are many 'complete works' and was looking for some advice on what is best to buy.

I didnt want to start a new thread for a trivial matter such as this, thought some of the bookworms would perhaps have a look at my post and be able to point me in the right direction.

Start off with "The Picture of Dorian Gray".....it's a good read .:)

  10. I previously whinged on this thread like a whiny little 14 year old bitch about how I fancy my friend, but I've decided to grow some balls and do something about it. Question is, if a girl you're friends goes to a nightclub with her mates, popping in yourself later in the night and spilling the beans to her in an attempt to get in there, romantic or a bit creepy?

P.S I'm not going to use PnB to discuss every boring detail of my love life don't worry, this is just one perticular thing I can't really talk about to people I actually know.

If she is really your friend then I'd imagine her reaction to you "spilling the beans", would be one of total surprise, as she probably has you labelled as a workshy little shit who'd be too lazy to make such an effort.

I suspect that your underlying motive here is to find someone who'll help your old ma with the dishes.;)

PS. Feel free to keep discussing your boring and confused life...it certainly makes me feel happier with my lot.
