  1. Question regarding SAAS:

Currently, my sister gets quite a lot of money from SAAS through bursaries etc. She'll be going into 4th year and I'll (hopefully) be going into 1st year in September. Are we likely to lose out this year as both are applying for SAAS? I hope this makes sense.

    Thanks in advance, etc.

I don't think so, I thought when there were multiple siblings at uni they actually expected the parents to provide less support to each wean.

Although in 4th year you get a bit less anyway for some reason.

  2. Just heard today that I've been selected for interview (in London in January) for the funding award that I need to be able to take the LLM at UPenn. Means I've made the last 24 of the UK applicants for funding to go to Penn for postgraduate study next year. This shit could be about to get real!

    Cracking stuff, well done.

  3. When I was at Uni, the main sport for students seemed to be Rugby, not just for playing but watching too. Football was very rarely mentioned! This always surprised me, is this still the case today? Or is it even a case?

Bit of a mixed bag at Glasgow, I know plenty of football fans here - and very few of them are OF fans actually. Amazing what an education can do.

  4. Byers Road too?! Jesus Christ, my days of walking round the West End late at night carefree are over. He's on fucking bail too.

Is it weird I tried to look him up on facebook? Probably. But I wanted to know who to avoid.

Maybe I'm getting them confused between news stories, when Adam mentioned it it rang a bell though.

This link provides a middle name, which will help with any cyber stalking STV news. Believe me, he has a strong online presence and is a rather infamous figure on campus.

  5. Bibliographies count for us in music - I think they always have. I got special dispensation to go slightly over in last years dissertation since I referenced a lot of youtube videos and the URL's for them are huuuuuuuge.

Aye, so someone who was in my year and did a couple of the same courses as me is in court accused of gay rape. Was one of those guys who everyone is aware of, had nicknames for and generally thought him to be a bit of an oddball. Really quite horrifying.

  6. I'm going to get myself some earplugs, it's about time I did so with the number of gigs I go to. Any recommendations on what's good, what's a reasonable price to be paying etc?

Going to Testament tomorrow, first time seeing them so should be good.

The ones I get from the rehearsal studio I go to are 50p a pair, not shopped around or anything but they're right there and it seems reasonable enough to me.

  7. Here's one for you regular gig goers. Any of you wear earplugs to gigs? I started having tinnitus and ear pain for days after gigs and I am terrified of damaging my hearing. I went to see Opeth on Tuesday and wore earplugs for the first time. I was amazed at how good it sounded. And of course, my ears weren't ringing after it.

Think I'm going to start wearing them from now on.

They're probably pretty sensible in fairness.

I always wear them when I'm playing gigs, but not when I'm watching.

If the band and the sound engineer are sensible then there's really no need for the audience to be worried, you don't end up with ringing ears and you can actually hear the music. Sadly a lot of bands think loud = better which just isn't true.

It's been a long time actually since I've had ringing ears from a gig. Clubs on the other hand...

  8. Having openly accessible tertiary education is obviously to the benefit of society and the economy and allows people to fulfil their potential without having to shit themselves about the financial implications. Maybe the bar for funding should be set higher (ie. someone with BCC doing fashion management at Caley can get tae), but the idea of not funding it at all... I can't see how that wouldn't screw things up a bit.

Anyway, I've just realised that being 4th year - if I'm going to do anything else next year I need to get applying soon! Was thinking about doing a composition masters, since I've enjoyed composing and I'm pretty good at it - but then I remembered that would involve entering the self absorbed culture of the contemporary classical composer, something which truly would be vacuous and frustrating. That' before you consider the non-existent job prospects - there might be one full time composer in Scotland. ONE.

I think I'd be far happier teaching.

  9. Loved this!Anyone age approx 35 or over should read this - copied from a friend ... Checking out at the supermarket recently, the young cashier suggested I should bring my own bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. I apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days". the clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations". She was right about one thing--our generation didn't have the green thing in "Our" day. So what did we have back then? After some reflection and soul-searching on "Our" day here's what I remembered we did have.... Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles repeatedly. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 240 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the country of Wales. In the kitchen, we blended & stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we older folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please post this on your Facebook profile so another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smarty-pants young person can read this!!

    1. Is it just my generation that paragraph then?

    2. Does the original author of this think these things, especially the ones I've put in bold, don't still happen?!

    Holy mother of f**klaugh.gif

  10. Went to see Everything Everything at King Tut's last Friday - was top notch, their new stuff sounds really good.

Next one planned is Sigur Ros at the SECC.

Latino Lover, I'm assuming your based near Melbourne looking at their website.

  11. Surely a band like Biffy Clyro should be aware of the general shiteness of the SECC and look to play 2 or 3 nights at the Barrowlands instead?

BIffy at the Barras would sell out within a couple of minutes now.

It's unfortunately the only place in Glasgow they can really play.

The guy in the middle hosts the shit contest that goes on there on whatever night the "boom" thing is (these guys obviously won it). Consists of teams of a guy and a girl doing challenges, which include face/arse slapping, swapping clothes and guys drinking "pints of shite" made from the contents of the overflow trays (or whatever they're called) from under the draught taps.

It's actually fucking bizarre. I don't know why I keep letting people talk me into going to the garage, its only redeeming feature is the attic, where there are sometimes some decent tunes, but it's been dead anytime I've been up there.

  13. I have a "die hard" Celtic "supporter" (never been to a game but watches 'most' games on telly) on mine who posted:

Thinking the QPR bit was a typo, I replied saying there was no shame in losing to an English Premiership team on penalties. I figured the penny would drop then. So he posts:

  14. See how you were saying they require a freshers pass? You can still just buy into each event though can't you? Cause I'm not paying for the pass but I might have to if it's required to get into events.

Nope, all the events at both the QMU and the GUU are freshers pass only. Unless something has changed, but I don't see why they would.

  15. Yeah someone told me that my friends at Strathclyde and Edinburgh couldn't come to any Glasgow events, I'm assuming that's a load of shite?

No, thats not a load of shite. Glasgow Uni's events require a fresher's pass which can only be bought by freshers. Or you could do a Fudge and pretend and see what happens, but I don't think that would work anymore going by the way I got my pass, I'd ordered it sometime before and it came with a bag of freebies.

The Glasgow Uni events are absolutely hoaching anyway, it's no wonder the don't want others in.

  16. Took forever to actually get through to SAAS today but when I did I was 17th in the queue (which was weird I thought) and got sorted quickly (turns out it was SAAS' fault and not mines). Getting my award letter next week. :)

No idea when I start uni though, I'd imagine I'll get an email in the next few weeks.

    That's disturbingly normal.

Only 17th in the queue though? Bravo sir. Who'd you suck off to get that deal.

  17. I tried and failed to enroll for 3rd year today. Just another day on MyCampus. 8) I have now been moved to a 3rd advisor in 3 years and come September/October that will become 4.

MyCampus is an utter joke. They must still have the WebSurf software kicking about - they should just cut their losses and go back to it whenever it is feasible.

I did manage to register, but I do only have two classes this year.

  18. Must be a real pain in the arse when the only pub in Glasgow hasn't got any jobs. :(

You're in for a shite day Gypsie. Just count yourself lucky you don't deal with Student Finance England, who are inexplicably worse.

Because for some reason that place attracts so many more applications than anywhere else in Glasgow. rolleyes.gif

It's not just bar jobs, it's every part time job - as soon as it's advertised you'll be competing with a ridiculous number of people. When I applied to Crepe a Croissant I saw the number of CV's they had in a big plastic wallet. It was easily over a hundred.

  19. Turn up at the students union, tell them you'll work whenever on the bar. If you're at Uni in Dundee, certainly, I absolutely guarantee they will not turn you away. Bar work is just about everywhere, and its the ideal student job, frankly.

At the QMU, I believe they had something like 20 times more applicants than positions the first time I applied.

  20. Or, y'know, get a part time job.

True, although that can be very difficult.

Does put them in a potentially unfair position. Although there are bigger issues with students from poorer backgrounds struggling to get in at all.

  21. SAAS got my award right first time this year. I was stunned.

Also, check the back of the award. £900 sounds like they might have given youthe minimum until they verfiy income. That or you're parents are quite well off and they expect them to make a contribution.

I kind of don't like how they do that. It means that effectively students from well off families have to remain dependents.
