  1. If discussions with folk I know are anything to go by, the Arab/Israel conflict is an issue that most folk have a view on but the views are based on relatively little background knowledge. I'm not setting myself up as any kind of middle east expert here; given it's importance, looking back, it was totally ignored when I was in school (mid 60s to mid 70s) and about all I can remember about school "history" would be about the French Revolution and the First World War. I won't suggest for a minute that Wikipedia is the answer to that knowledge deficit but for anyone interested, here's a link to their summary (no doubt folk are working on updates.) - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab–Israeli_conflict I referred a pal of mine to the page - before he saw it, he thought that it all kicked off because of the 6 Day War in 1967. Looking at the Wikipedia entry, it's such a pity that the big guy upstairs wasn't a bit clearer in his real estate allocations.
  2. Isn't it the case that there's a religious disagreement about which group a God gave the land to?
  3. Anyone know what was so special about the fourth of October that convinced this eejit that it had been selected for the biggest mass murder since the alleged flood? I'm still here, by the way, and our "aloominm" foil remained in our kitchen cupboard.
  4. It'll be all part of the plan - AL won't have heard of them either... Reasonably optimistic tonight. Bit narked that I'll only be able to watch the first half (longstanding Thursday evenings commitment). Just heard on telly that 3 clubs play in the stadium so the pitch is a bit interesting. Might as well get the excuses in early!
  5. I wonder if she's a shareholder in "aloominm" producing companies? So, according to her, am I dead now? I think I should be told. It's the 5th October. Or given the time zone difference should I check again tomorrow? She is going to be SO pissed off when she realises that most folk are still around. Looking forward to her next video explaining that the reason it didn't happen was because of a deep state plot to make her look ridiculous.
  6. I saw most of Sunak's speech and about the only thing I agreed with was the raising of the age for buying cigarettes. Two questions though. 1. Will the Tories decline any financial donations from cigarette and tobacco companies between now and any related votes in the Commons or Lords? 2. Will there be a three line whip in favour of the proposals or will there be a free vote in the Commons? ( The "freedom" brigade might be in bother with a three line whip.)
  7. Mrs Sunak on stage doing a "gonny be nice tae ma man? Just gonny? Please? He's away nice!"
  8. They do know that these speeches and interviews ARE also being shown in Scotland, yes?
  9. Apparently at one time he was of the opinion that there are very fine people on both sides. (Cue Father Ted racism clip).
  10. Trump is looking grumpy because the late great JC has better hair.
  11. Have Labour said where the saving in the council budget will come from instead? (Asking for a cynic.)
  12. If private schools are abolished, it's not even as if the wealthier wouldn't still have huge advantages. They'd still be able to buy homes in the catchment areas for the schools with better grounds/facilities and they'd still be able to buy in additional tutor support and/or afford summer schools etc. I've yet to meet anyone who thinks that the quality of the state system wouldn't be improved if all of our politicians had to send their kids to the same schools as all their constituents.
  13. Just wait until they hear about this... "Pope Francis hints at acceptance to blessings of same-sex couples" Source - https://globalnews.ca/news/10000935/pope-francis-lgbtq-blessings/
  14. Don't suppose by any chance Dross is one the tricky sixty?
  15. I'll post this here, but I confess that I considered starting a new thread called "Served the c**t right". Basically, one of these youtuber a-holes who goes around annoying folk to video reactions got a bigger reaction than he was expecting. "Jurors saw video of the shooting, which captures the confrontation between Cook and Colie lasting less than 30 seconds. The footage shows Cook approaching Colie as he picks up a food order. Cook looms over Colie while holding a cellphone about 6 inches from Colie’s face. The phone broadcasts the phrase “Hey dips—, quit thinking about my twinkle” multiple times through a Google Translate app. In the video, Colie says “stop” three different times and tries to back away from Cook, who continues to advance. Colie tries to knock the phone away from his face before pulling out a gun and shooting Cook in the lower left chest. There is no pause between the moment he draws the weapon and fires the shot. 16. Just watching her speech... not a great start, praising GB "news". Brief summary of what I've seen so far... fekk global warming, fekk business taxes fekk, unleash gas by fracking, cut red tape... presumably a "Greatest Hits" edition will come out soon. Sadly, the guys with the straightjacket are out of camera coverage. Edit... Rees-Mogg and Patel clapping joyously when the ramblings ended.
  17. On HS2, pal of mine said last night that he reckoned this stuff about cancelling the Birmingham/Manchester section is pish and Sunak is going to play the hero card this week by "announcing" that they're going ahead with it. Would that qualify as a conspiracy or is it just typical misdirection (telling lies) for political gain?
  18. The anti-EU headbangers in the Tory party will have been cheering for the good old US of A. They'll be gutted. I've no great interest in golf, but I'm certainly not going to pass up an opportunity to revel in the Americans getting it right roon 'em.
  19. True enough. I haven't missed voting in any election, local or national, or in any referendum since I became eligible to vote when I was a student. I think folk like me should get an award for services to democracy. My brother is as mad as a box of frogs. He is always banging on about politics and politicians but can't seem to remember the last time he voted. One of his favourite expressions is "You see, in my opinion...." which is kind of odd as he seems remarkably reluctant to express that opinion at the ballot box. Don't vote? Shut yer pus then!
  20. "Stop councils implementing 15 minute cities"? How is it a problem if someone wants to open a new GP surgery, or a dental practice, or paper shop or chemist 14.5 mins away from some houses? Will the Government insist that these are 15.5 mins away instead? Sounds like very un-Conservative and of a micro-managing mindset to me. Seems to me that having more "local" facilities instead of centralised ones miles away from most people's homes isn't a terrible idea.
  21. These cnuts are so low they could limbo dance under a snake's belly while wearing a sombrero and carrying a tray with six pints of lager on it. I think I need a lie down...
