  1. Oooft. Destiny? One of the top 5 worst Tom Baker stories if you ask me. Stupid sounding Daleks who have become 'Davros Minions', a boring storyline and a fair amount of terrible acting. Resurrection is good though. Fair enough. To some people, Genesis is the best story of all time or thereabouts. In my (shill alert) review runthrough of Dr Who, I'm up to the Seeds of Doom, and including that story, there are already 5 stories in the Baker era I prefer to it.
  2. Sorry, I never saw this comment... I thought I was pretty complimentary about Ambassadors. Certainly Season 7 was the best of his era.
  3. Finally finished reviewing the Pertwee era, take a look if you've got the inclination http://stuartreviewsstuff.wordpress.com/category/doctor-who/page/3/
  4. With everything that's happened today, this seems to me to be the most scandalous. On what grounds can Celtic threaten clubs?
  5. 30 Minutes or Less. I summed it up in my review (link in the sig) as the sort of thing only worth watching on a long haul flight. 4/10.
  6. Just watched 'Sorry, Wrong Number', a 1948 film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster. It's about a bed ridden woman who accidentally overhears a telephone call where two people are plotting to murder someone, and she comes to the conclusion, thanks to a variety of phonecalls to other people, and a bunch of flashbacks, that what she actually overheard was her husband planning to kill her. I like old films, but this was far too melodramatic and shonkily acted. And there was some loooooong dry spells in the film. Having said that.... But that wasn't enough to save this one. 4/10
  7. @SGMilne for me Tweet about Scottish football, Football Manager research and other random nonsense.
  8. My thoughts on this would be 'Tough for Saints'. I'm sure they can find someone else who they CAN finance a deal for without Rangers being in the SPL. What do Saints fans think?
  9. I love that the main talking points following both programmes include "I thought Tom English would look different" and "Jim Spence was wearing a snappy suit"
  10. Another point about ESPN... Scaremongerers say that no TV company would want an SPL without the 4 Old Firm derbies. ESPN show far more SPL games than SKY and they don't get ANY Old Firm Derbies.
  11. Has anyone asked ESPN what they plan on doing? I know I shouldn't be surprised, but the standard of Print Media journalism over the past couple of days especially has been rotten. "Sky will rip up the deal" says the Record, without wondering if they might renegotiate it (which in all liklihood they will). The Express and other rags interviewing scores of ex Rangers players to give what looks like a consensus view that the SPL needs them. Aaaaargh. Why has nobody said 'It will cost clubs, but they'll be able to renegotiate the distribution of any TV income more fairly since the 11-1 vote will be scrapped'. A bigger slice of a smaller pie.
  12. They've made the savings with the wage cuts, which is fine, but it just takes them through to the end of the season and maintains their assets so the club is still an 'attractive' prospect. But these players won't stick with the wages they are on and I doubt even a new owner would be able to pay them anywhere close to what they were on before, so they'll all be off in the close season. And that's even if they get a new owner and aren't liquidated.
  13. Yeah I'd heard about that. Shame. Still, I don't think he was exactly young.
  14. My run through reviewing Doctor Who from start to finish has reached the end of the Patrick Troughton era. Check it out here and as always, if you agree/disagree, let me know
  15. I'm neither here nor there on the Deadly Assassin. It's not as good as some people think. I did like Vincent & The Doctor though. The Massacre - the fact that no good reconstructions exist makes it harder to appreciate. I like it, but then I don't love it like Ian Levine and his ilk seem to. One story I really like that seems to fly in the face of what 'Fandom' likes is The Gunfighters.
  16. Ah well, we've all got opinions. Still...Destiny?!?! By all means, keep reading the reviews though. I'd be interested in how our opinions will inevitably differ on other stories.
  17. FWIW, my rating of Dalek stories in classic Doctor Who would probably be... The Daleks Power of the Daleks The Daleks Masterplan Genesis of the Daleks Evil of the Daleks Remembrance of the Daleks The Chase Day of the Daleks Planet of the Daleks Daleks Invasion of Earth Resurrection of the Daleks Death to the Daleks Revelation of the Daleks Destiny of the Daleks
  18. The Chase is a story which I can appreciate people not liking as much as Daleks Invasion of Earth, but I just happen to prefer it. We can agree to disagree on that one. I do agree that Richard Martin isn't a particularly good director, but considering he directs both of them, I don't see your issue. But your second point.... On any scale, how can you think a story like Destiny of the Daleks is better than ANY 1960s story, let alone a 1960s Dalek story. It's one of the worst stories they've ever made in my opinion. And the voices...Hello Zippy! Meanwhile Planet of the Daleks - while good - is an inferior near scene-for-scene remake of The Daleks. Genesis of the Daleks is very good obviously - a classic - but it's a Davros story rather than a Dalek one. Day of the Daleks just has the Daleks shoehorned into someone else's story, and while it's alright, Death to the Daleks again is nowhere near the standard of the Hartnell ones. Evil of the Daleks is a good story, but it's a missing story so we'll never get the full experience of seeing it unless it's reanimated. One of the big problems with Evil in its current reconstructed/audio form is that two episodes are essentially visual only. If you are genuinely entertained by listening to Jamie walking around a Victorian house completing the trials for the Human Factor, ahead plot driven stories like Power of the Daleks, then that's up to you.
  19. Ratings discussion aside, I've very much enjoyed the latest series of Doctor Who so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how that plot with the little girl develops. Incidentally, for any fans of the 'Old' series, I've started reviewing all the stories from the very beginning on my blog, so feel free to take a look (link in sig)
  20. Part of the problem with the Dr Who ratings is that it's on too early and doesn't have anything worthwhile on the lead-in or lead-out. Don't Scare the Hare - Doctor Who - So You Think You Can Dance. What the BBC does now I believe - when taking ratings into consideration - is look at the overall figure, including the repeat and iPlayer views. More and more, the notion that people will watch something while it is on is becoming redundant. So the 'Final Rating' for last week's episode was 8.9m, which is comparible with the Final Ratings with the series openers of 2, 3 and 4. Also, Dr Who isn't a kids show; it may have initially been started as that, but it was also started as an educational show. It's classed as a show for all of the family to enjoy.
  21. I'll add this to the relevant thread, but I need a new researcher for Raith Rovers for Football Manager 2010. If you're interested, let me know by emailing me at sgmilne@blueyonder.co.uk Cheers, Stuart
