I am out in the USA at the moment and was discussing this with my colleagues. As a matter of honesty I should state that we work for defence company so increased action in Syria may have an affect on us. What was interesting to me was that everyone agreed that bombing Syria wouldn't achieve anything on its own. It was pretty clear that everyone felt we should have a plan and idea for what we could really do. Yet for some reason I was the only one who then was against the bombing vote. It is quite disappointing to me that ppl I like and respect can appreciate bombing is flawed but still think that is okay because we "need to do something". I feel a bit sad tonight...

Yes it was, not sure how the labour vote held up though so it could be that the Tories weren't that far off either. Not really had any other info so far which sucks... if it keeps going on though I am going to be stuck with my kids when I finish work in a bit so my wife can go along to the rest of the count.

Rumours are that at Linlithgow that SNP got close to winning first round but couldn't quite make it so it is continuing.

Did anyone bother trying to see the Perseid Meteors this week? I managed to catch a couple of photos such as the one below.

Pluto is currently a magnitude 14 object in the sky. The limit for a naked eye observer from a really dark site is around about 6.5 so you can't see Pluto naked eye. I suspect you would need at least a 10 inch scope to see it and even then it would just be a white dot to be honest. The example of taking pictures across a period of time is the best method of at least showing something interesting.

Sky-Watcher are a reasonable brand to use and the 130P & EQ3 mount is quite a popular starter scope. If you use google and search for them against stargazerslounge.com you can probably find some people on there discussing or reviewing them and those guys do tend to know a fair bit. As has been said however, the best thing to do when buying a telescope is to try and meet up with people who have it or have had it and they can talk you through it. They also may be able to identify a better option. Also, the biggest thing with astronomy is to know how to use the telescope, or more importantly the mount. So make sure you understand how to use it and how to get it pointed at the right targets etc. and this is something else that astronomy groups can help with.

I know we tend to get excited but that isn't actually about Scotland itself so I don't see what you are on about. Anyway, he is also free to say what he wants here even if we may mot agree. I woukd rather you didn't offer your aggressive, unhelpful comments than him to be honest.

There are a few at my place that like to list their qualifications, I actually looked up the letters for one guy as he seemed to have more than was healthy for a sane person. It turned out they were pretty much all pointless management things that you just pay to join and get a few letters after your name. I now make sure I ignore his emails.
