Yousaf's first big f**k up as FM which was entirely of his own making rather than something inherited from Sturgeon was the council tax freeze. Aside from what anyone thinks of it as a policy, the implementation of it was shambolic and was done in a way which unavoidably pissed councils off as much as the policy itself, torching his relationship with COSLA when he'd not long signed a partnership agreement with them that was supposed to reset the relationship. This was made worse when Robison openly admitted that they'd pretty much come up with it on a whim because they needed a headline grabbing policy and hadn't costed it or really thought through the potential consequences at all.

So we come to the final situation which has led to his resignation. It's obviously entirely understandable to want to get ahead of events with the Green membership calling an EGM to vote on the BHA, it makes sense to try to avoid the eventuality of looking weak through the junior partner being the one to end it. That the Greens were doing this certainly makes it fair to point out the petulance of their reaction since, even though their MSP group were all in favour of staying in.

Once again though it seems to be a decision Yousaf has taken on a whim with no thought whatsoever given to the potential consequences. You can surely construct a means of the SNP ditching the agreement which isn't unilaterally deciding to sack them two days after you were publicly talking it up , which would have carried far less risk of the Greens turning against him the way they have. As embarrassing as some of their reactions have been, not foreseeing the possibility that they may not react kindly to this now they're an opposition party again or having a plan for it suggests someone who is genuinely incapable of taking a long term view or seeing the consequences of their actions, which is not exactly a desirable quality in a leader. Just as with the council tax freeze, doing it is one issue but the way he's gone about doing it is simply idiotic.

He's always had a reputation for incompetence arising from previous ministerial posts, but this level of sheer naivety is something else.

The Verity House f**k up basically ended him as a credible politician

  2. There's no need for the SNP to now be making any real concessions to anyone now.

The Green's decision to vote no to Humza was a foot stamping reaction to the individual. They know full well that in a general election they would be back to one or two MSPs when Labour pick up more constituencies as the SNP sweep the lists.

Even if it was Kate Forbes the best they will manage is abstention.

  3. Kicking out the Greens was always a safe bet purely in terms of an SNP administration. Alba, Greens and Tories won't bring the govt down as they, and the SNP, would be the big losers from any general election.

It also meant HY was never going to be able to lead the parliament.

I wonder if he has been counselled to do this by people in the party who knew exactly that.

I dont think people knew how unpopular he really was until the WM campaigning started in Feb/March.

No wonder his cabinet colleagues were banging the the table when he made the announcement.

That or he is just an absolute simpleton.

    Both seem plausible.

2 weeks of work since last week. And made a somewhat adventurous start on Monday. Climbing stob coire sgriodain and chno dearg. Stopping off at the little lochan in between to sit and have a couple of cans.

Camped in the valley on the other side, before taking on being na lap in the morning. A nice walk along loch Ossian, before getting the train back to the other end at corrour.

I had a minor freak out coming upon that loch in the thickest mist I have ever walked in, I was almost in the loch before I noticed it. The wind was so strong that there were huge waves coming towards the shore and because of the mist you couldn't see the other side which gave the impression the water went on forever.

I thought I had somehow come to the edge of the world half way up a munro.

I have a strong suspicion I didn't actually summit SCS but I won't be rushing back.

I think it's giving Yousaf too much credit as opposed to an adult political advisor who has been able to apply Politics 101 over the past week.

The same applies to Forbes' public vote of confidence: she doesn't need to try and play 4-D chess when Yousaf's genuine authority is pretty much toast already. He might well get lockstep MSP support but absolutely none of it is for him personally.

Beholden how exactly? Last time I checked, the memo wasn't that the SNP would create a new BHA with Ash fucking Regan.

The SNP ran the country with nowhere near a majority at Holyrood for four years. While they're now on the other side of the government cycle, offering either a compromise (e.g. Budget items) or staring down other parties who don't actually want a collapse of government and election (Greens) is entirely viable IMO.

You might be correct but his personal authority is shot.

Interesting if the Tories would actually want a general election given there is every reason to expect they could go back to 4th party status.

Would it be giving Humza too much credit to suggest that this is the start of him doing similar and attempting to distance himself ? (A full year down the line tbf)

Maybe not but he has fucked it up spectacularly.

He has form for making impulsive decisions eg ripping up the Verity House agreement 5 minutes after signing it with COSLA by announcing the council tax freeze and not consulting his cabinet.

It's now clear he can't stay on. I imagine he will he sold sooner rather than later, if he hasn't already, that being beholden to Alba is intolerable.

Whilst the likes of Forbes might like him to own a WM defeat I think there will be enough MPs in the central belt thinking there is enough time to turn it around or the Humza effect hasn't bottomed out yet.

  7. The much maligned Beinn Bhuidhe today along the "ugly" new access track.

Have to say I throughly enjoyed it. The track has bedded in, at least as far the hilltrack and i would believe you if you told me it had been there 50 years.

Had summit views of mountains, lochs and islands so absolutely nothing to complain about.

Aye but I don’t recall us scrapping with Hamilton or Falkirk fans? You wouldn’t expect that sort of stuff off of a so called ‘premier’ club

Lads,  is a View From the Terrace friendly forum. Nobody here cares.

Very few Scots would now recognise a sport that's exciting, technically excellent and which hasn't been totally dominated for nearly 40 years by two secterian hatebuckets who've an obsession with the island of Ireland. Totally alien. Utterly unfathomable. How do they tolerate such a thing ?

We all hate the OF mate. You aren't going to get super fan points for extra hating them.

  10. Hard to know what to make of the season.

Objectively a very good points haul and a very good number of goals scored. It didnt feel like a lot of fun though. Some of the home games especially were turgid to watch.

Goodwin and the club obviously had zero goodwill and credit from the fans so everything that went wrong seemed heightened.

Players playing poorly were kept in the side too long and conversely (I don't have the stats) I'd be surprised if we went two matches with the same XI before last month. Injuries haven't helped with that and we are a much better team with Docherty than without.

It seems very old firmy to whine too much when you win the league though.

In most seasons that points tally would have been a much more comfortable winning margin so credit has to go to Goodwin for that also to Raith for keeping it tight.

I'll also patronise the rest of you before I go. For all the talk about it being a poor quality championship I think there are 8 good teams in this league - Arbroath and QP were garbage. But in at least one game I have seen every other team play good football.
