Frankly I've become really sick of all this "McCall the messiah" sort of talk, I would cast your mind back to season 2016 - 2017, when many wanted him sacked and where he was probably pretty lucky that he had a good relationship with Lachlan as most other Managers would indeed have been handed their P45.

Gary Harkins, Farid El Alagui ??

    Remember them ??

Well, yes, but the subsequent two-and-a-bit seasons have proved what a terrible decision sacking McCall would have been.  We have been an (almost) unqualified success since turning full-time.

FWIW, I think the summer made McCall's mind up that he wanted to move on to Thistle. Not because he wasn't 'backed' by the Board, or that his budget was cut, but because he realised that it is going to be a long time before the club has the infrastructure and finance required to go to the next level.

Don't know what anyone else thinks, however I believe McCall, Stewart and all the coaching staff should get massive plaudits for creating an identity and style which this team now play with. The personnel may indeed change, however our one touch pass and move game has stayed the same and I believe THAT is what's making the biggest difference as opposed to individual players.

Don't get me wrong, it helps enormously when you have the type of quality ball players that we have in midfield and attack but this year has proven that we can lose Smith, Crawford, Rose and Shankland, yet we continue to play the same fast and exciting style.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, it's just such a great time to be an Ayr fan especially when you think where we were just a couple of seasons back............

Agree and its not only an identity in terms of the way we play but also the type of player we sign and McCall has spoken a lot about this.

  3. Harvie, Doohan, Kelly the only ones away for us? I don’t think Moore, Ross or Murdoch will be fit either.

    Given our absentees I’d play

    Hare-Reid

    Houston
    Adams
    Roscoe
    Ecrepont

    Geggan
    Docherty
    Kerr

    McCowan
    Doolan
    Forrest

Absolutely no idea what to expect from Wrexham but it should be a good weekend regardless.
Houston has played for Rangers U20s in the competition already, not sure if that means he's cup tied. He might even still be eligible to play for them against Ballymena this weekend.
  4. It'd be almost impossible to answer everything in one post but to put things simply, statistical analysis can be as simplistic or in depth as the raw data you have to hand, the time you have to devote to it and the timescales that the manager needs it back.
With games now being recorded, ideally in a wide view, to cover all players in and out of possession, you'll be able to track the effectiveness of each player by the influence they have in games and the positions they take up. This can be presented into graphs, charts and maps for it to be interpreted easily.
Completed passes for example are all good and well but there's more importance for progressive passes in the final 3rd of the pitch as opposed to a deep lying midfielder taking the ball off the back 4 and playing an unpressured square ball.
Tackles, interceptions, aerial duals won, shots on target, successful crosses, distance covered to name but a few can also be included in an all encompassing model. Over a few months, a season or beyond, a management team can begin to build up numbers and values for all of their players. Again this can be displayed in maps or charts for presentations.
From there you can compare the relative strengths and weaknesses against other squad members or to touch on your second point, against future signings. It gives the management team some numbers to back up what their eyes, or hunches, tell them.
Analysis can also be used to scout future opponents to identify strengths, weaknesses and general tactics (eg set piece moves.) Taking that a stage further teams are now developing their own apps to display this information to individuals or to groups in their squad, generally goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers.
As technology progresses virtual reality headsets will be used during the week as managers and coaches talk their squad through their own tactics and strengths and weaknesses of their opponents.
Fascinating stuff and in simplistic terms if your team go onto the field of play with a more than fair chance of knowing how their opponents are going to line up and its been presented and displayed in an easy to understand manner, then over the course of a season it can be a measurable advantage.
For teams that don't have a huge transfer budget then analysis can be a very important tool in identifying the right players at the right price.
Maupay sold for £20m I see, Brentford had a day or so earlier brought in his replacement for a fraction of that price. They'll have lists of players by position, to cover for their better players leaving. Impressive stuff.
I doubt statistical analysis is feasible for the Scottish Championship and below due to the absence of any useful raw data.
  5. Hypothesis: McCall's strategy of signing promising players released from Aberdeen bigger clubs: Rose, Shankland, Smith, to a lesser extent, McDaid - and them going on to be successful - has led to us being a victim of our own (their) sucess.

Bigger clubs are perhaps more reluctant to release players like them, especially if McCall is interested. Consequently, there are fewer players available to sign on a permanent basis or, unlike when we took Rose, I believe Aberdeen effectively have first refusal on Roscoe should he go on to be as successful. Consequently, to follow the same strategy, we have to look at loans instead. Ultimately, if the player's character is right, is there a big difference between taking a player on loan or signing him permantly on a one year contract, when you know if he does well he will be away at the end of the season (like Smith)?

Managing to pick up the players we have in recent seasons that fit into the 19-21 year old bracket has been pretty exeptional but will prehaps become even more difficult.  Other clubs at our level - subsistance full-time - look down south or abroad or to recruit players - I don't think we are in that market. Alteratively, you're recuiting from the same small pool of domestic full-time players, who job around Championship clubs without much success.

    tl:dr - I'm fine with loans.

See the guy that runs the belrock has gone on a tirade of abuse to Shankland on twitter, charming, although i'm not happy at his chosen move to go to that extent is just wrong, not as if he's going to see that and think oh shit i better move back to Ayr

Extremely disappointed by this for Shankland and makes us look like idiots. He's going to have a lot of questions to answer now as to why his 'big move' has gone tits up. Imagine McCall will be fizzing with him.

My love for him has completely gone now he's signed for those wanks. Still, will make it all the funnier when they fail to get promoted for another season.

Big Jamie Adams to snap him in half, yes please.

Interesting that you would think giving Shankland abuse on Twitter is wrong but it's OK to hope one of our players snaps him in half...
