We looked set for a 4-2-3-1, but we don't really have a striker who can lead the line on his own, and one of our better midfielders is out, so it looks like a 4-4-2 is on the cards.

    As things stand:

    ------------Samson

    Irvine - Baird - Mckenzie - Stelios

    Smith - McShane - McGinn - Morgan

    -------------Sutton - Reilly

If everyone was fit and we signed a new striker:

    ------------Samson

    Irvine - Davis - McKenzie - Eckersley

    ------McShane - McGinn

    Magennis - Smith - Morgan

    -------------Striker-------------

I think a big part of Reilly's problem in a 4-2-3-1 has been the lack of support from behind. All very well being a loan striker, but the three behind have to give you some help, and against Thistle especially, he got none, with Smith, Kirkpatrick and being pushed far too deep to be of any real assistance.

Harry Davis coming in on August 1st will make a big difference although he won't be match fit to the end of the month. Eckersley Magennis and Hilson returning from injury will give the squad a more solid look as well.

I still think we will have more players coming in and one or two moving on.

While the players making the step up might require a bit more time to adjust to the set up, we really need to show an improved performance level from what's been on show in pre season and in the cup games.

I'm sure Jack Ross will have them ready for the Falkirk game.

Most of those injured players will add significantly to the team. Hilson looked very bright from what I've seen, but Davis, Eckersley and Magennis will improve our starting 11 considerably.

Sutton and Quinn look very likely to be moving on, although we should use them while we have them, Sutton especially.

Wind your neck in you condescending ,odious cretin.People are entitled to be critical of our quite frankly pathetic transfer business so far.The fact you label them

as old firm supporters says a lot more about you than them. Now run along

Transfer business hasn't been pathetic. It's been varied: experience with Samson, McShane and Davis coming in, up and coming youth with the two Stewarts signing on, some run of the mill championship players such as Buchanan and Kirkpatrick to bulk up the squad. We're still looking to add another striker, which I think is the biggest gap we have so far, with Reilly having a good scoring record in the division but looking like he needs some support.

Results haven't been very good so far, but the league is the main objective, so I'll wait to see how our new players do there before panicking.

Therein lies a part of your problem. There's no one, certainly not within our budget, who will provide a like for like with Mallan. Everyone we're going to get in on our wage budget will be clear downgrade from Stevie in the second half of last season.

That being said, Kyle Magennis is the guy to step into that role. The sheet number of chances we created against Dundee shows that Kyle is up for the challenge in the middle of the park and we have been unfortunate to lose him at this point.

Magennis is the huge miss at the moment. Fantastic young player with enormous potential and great attitude. The sooner he's back the better. Big pressure on Morgan, McGinn, Smith and Magennis to perform this season - that's what our season will be decided on.

The signings we have made this summer have been fucking terrible. If Stewart, Kirkpatrick and Reilly have you excited for the season ahead then more power to you. But let's be honest Gavin Reilly is absolutely shite.  He's scored something like 5 goals in 2 years.

Many tipped us to do well based on the end of last season.

We've lost O'Brien, Mallan and Loy from that team and replaced them with shite.

Will be very surprised if we're anywhere near the play offs.

Reilly scored 24 in 48 starts for QoS in two seasons in the Championship. Given the chance and some support he can score at this level. A few players struggling to settle in, but the team on the whole have looked lackadaisical in pre-season and in the League Cup so far. We'll definitely be in the play offs at least. Another 2 or 2 players to come in, with Eckersley and Magennis to come back from injury.

We need to start approaching games the right way and we'll do much better.

I'm in the maybe aye maybe no camp after seeing the link on BAWA that he has missed 50 games in the last two years due to injury. It's a big gamble taking him on. His skill is there we know that.

To be fair, he missed 9 games in the 2013/14 season with I think the same injury he has now, but on the other knee, and missed 28 games in the 2015/16 season with knee ligament damage on the other knee. Other than that there's only this current injury - nothing recorded before that first one.

It's almost certain that he'll recover from this injury the way he recovered the first time he suffered it on the other knee, but there are obviously no guarantees. Everything is always a bit of a gamble.

I'm inclined to agree overall. Would you be concerned about the GK situation at all? Or do you think that Samson will be good enough with GMcK and Davis in front of him?

I'm still not convinced by the 4-4-2 (especially in last night's incarnation). I doubt we'll be playing that away from home, surely.

Not concerned re GK mate. Samson will do fine for us. Got stick again last night despite doing nothing wrong, and indeed keeping the score at 1-0 early on with a great stop. Young Stewart will want to push him for the position, so we should be ok. Never a big fan of 4-4-2 unless you have two real workers in the middle. McShane still finding his feet last night, would possibly stick another midfielder in there on Saturday to help us try to get some control of the game. Kirkpatrick looked bright when he came on - could he be worth playing in a slightly advanced midfield role?

I'd bring Baird in for Buchanan. Nothing against him, but he struggled last night and I'd give him time to adjust in terms of full time training and wait for his chance again. Stick with Reilly up front - I think he'll get goals. Looked quite sharp early on, but the lack of supply led to him falling out of the game. Need to get the ball to him, Morgan and Smith more quickly to enable them to do something.

I'd do this on Saturday unless we sign an amazing match-ready striker before then.

    -----------Samson

    Irvine-Baird-McK-Stelios

    ----McGinn-McShane

    O'Keefe - Smith - Morgan

    ----------Reilly (maybe even Sutton)

I wonder if O'Keefe is why we've not bothered signing a wide player so far.

Looks good to me, as long as we approach the game correctly and up the tempo.

We've lost our 2 main goalscorers in that period and our main assist creater. Until they are replaced we aren't anywhere near that side.

Mallan is the main loss. Loy scored a few goals, but we didn't create enough last night, regardless of who was up front. We've brought in McShane as a deep lying creative force, and to be fair to him he's been at the club for less than a week, played twice and been man of the match in one of those games. It's a team thing though - the intensity was missing last night in my view, which made it more difficult to create against a packed defence. We were too slow in our buildup at key times, which needs to improve, but I think in players such as McGinn, McShane, Magennis (when fit), Morgan and Smith, we should be creating more than enough chances. I think Reilly can score goals for us, as can Morgan, but we do need another striker to help with that.

Approach needs to be better agaist Thistle and beyond that.

Agree with the Buchanan/Baird point. Tough to judge Buchanan on little game time but I think Baird looks stronger, faster, and better in the air.

What struck me tonight was how easily Livingston out muscled us in every position. Their players looked much stronger and really bullied us all over the park.

Sutton when he came on made a (albeit slight) difference by winning some headers, and O'Keefe and Kirkpatrick did well by being direct.

Baird should be starting. Ended last season in a good partnership with Gary Mack, Buchanan should wait for his chance. Agree that Livvy bullied us at times - Buchanan for the goal a perfect example (and the chance right after). Need to be able to deal with teams being physical or they'll have the key to nullifying us.

Thought O'Keefe was a delight when he came on. A real gem I think, no fear in taking players on and a bit of flair as well. Kirkpatrick also looked eager to impress - hadn't impressed me in preseason so far but looked more of a threat from the bench,

Onward to Thistle and Jack has some decisions to make re Buchanan/Stewart imo.

The expectations have been way too high after our good run towards the end of last season. Think some folk genuinely expected us to be winning the league this year.

I expect us to challenge for the title this year. We didn't just have a wee purple patch, we were the best team in the league for over a third of the season, scoring more goals than anyone else and all while under huge pressure. The squad isn't complete yet but once Davis is in I expect another striker in, possibly two, one of whom will be from the top level. People also forgetting we have Magennis and Eckersley injured - two top players from our great excape last season.

Add Magennis, Eckersley, Davis and another good striker into the squad and we'll see an improvement in our fortunes. Be shocked if we're not in the top 4 this season, and if we're in that area we should be capable of challenging to win the league.

Indeed. The only worry I have is about his knee. His ability alone is certainly not in any question and you have to feel that if all things were OK with his knee, he'd have found a club by now.

He didn't have many options when he came on loan to us to be fair, and an injured player is always a risk, but possibly less of a risk to a team which knows the injury and will have detailed info on his recovery.
