Miovski’s brilliant finish at Tynecastle being disallowed for an innocuous trip in the build-up is yet another example of VAR basically taking away what would have been a great memory and moment for fans. These aren’t being replaced with new fond memories of VAR taking 5 minutes to award a penalty for the ball grazing someone’s hand. Even though this benefited Hearts in the moment, it’s something that affects every single team and every single match-going fan, and is gradually chipping away at what made all of us fall in love with the game.

What is football without the magic moments of quality and spontaneous celebrations you still talk about years later? We’re getting less and less of those thanks to VAR.

And unfortunately, this is a feature of having a VAR, rather than a bug. “Getting better refs to operate it” (from where?) or “running it more like in Germany” (its shit there too) or “eliminating referee bias” (Alex Jones-level bullshit) will not make VAR any less of a complete shit show that is ruining the game.

I mainly agree, but there was what should have been one absolutely epic VAR memory earlier in the season in the Saints v Aberdeen game.

VAR correctly award Aberdeen a 95th minute penalty for handball.  They ‘score’ with the last kick of the game to make it 2-2, and the Dons fans go wild.  Saints fans gutted.

The penalty was a double hit though, which VAR SHOULD have picked up.  And if they had that would have been a pretty epic turnaround in emotions for both sets of fans.

So in theory VAR could provide some fantastic memories.

I was wondering if we were the team that were in for him. Can't see it being Hearts, Hibs or Aberdeen. Killie and Dundee have signed Stewart and Main. St Johnstone and Motherwell I wouldn't imagine have the funds leaving us or Ross County?

Can't say he's ever overly impressed but does seem like a bit of a Robinson signing in terms of physicality

Was it Nouble that at points last season had a million pound price tag attached to him?

I know that would have had an element of exaggeration to it, but even so, I can’t imagine that we’d be able to pay even 1/10th of that.

Saints are notorious for underestimating cup crowds because the revenue is split.

One time there was a Challenge Cup semi when the crowd was reported as 4500 despite Morton filling the 3000 capacity Caledonian Stand. They complained and the attendance was revised to 6542.

Underestimating 😄  Presumably the amount of VAT accounted for would be based on an 'underestimated' crowd rather than the real crowd.  Not a clever idea to mess with HMRC, look what happened to the mob a few miles East of you!

In the past I’ve no doubt that happened.

Can’t see it happening at a time where almost all sales will be digital and not cash.

Strain's red card against Rangers was about the clearest red you'll ever see.

We’ve had two players red carded by VAR for handball penalties.  One v Celtic one v Rangers.

I genuinely can’t remember other hand ball reds in those circumstances.

Have seen plenty of hand balls given that you could argue stopped a ball going on target, but reds not given.

  5. Very hard to judge new players when they debut coming on in a game against Celtic when 3-0 down and down to 10 men, but Elvis didn’t look like he’s the answer to the gap Strain has left.

Baccus and O’Hara being out shows we need more depth in midfield.

Might have got away with it against another team, or if Celtic hadn’t made such an electric start. Perhaps Rogers gets some credit if he’d told them to get right in and about us and not let the makeshift midfield settle down.

Unfortunately it's a red but it's an unlucky one. Olusanya was in a situation that he had to go for it and Hart had as much right to.

I dont for a second believe a referee gets advised to go back and review that after giving a Celtic (or Rangers) player a yellow for doing that to any other team's keeper though.

Same as Strain’s VAR assisted red card against the Rangers, when at 0-0.

Zero chance ‘Tav’ gets sent off for that.

Was that not where one of them thumped the back of the stand when Celtic fucked up a move and got the 'yous enjoying the match?' from the rest of the crowd. Thought they slinked out not long after that.

Yup, and our seats are in the back row.  6 of us, two in their late 80s.

They actually didn't go until Celtic messed up yet another corner on 90 minutes as they probably thought they could still come back, and there was no slinking out - gave the vicky as they walked out.

Stewards - nothing to see here.

Just on the stewards, my teenage nephew used to come with us.  Once he stood at the bit on the back to get a better view - stewards on his case in minutes.

Two obvious Celtic fans - again, nothing to see here.

In theory away fans mixing with home fans shouldn't be a problem, the reality is very different.

As long as those fans in the home end behave themselves then no issue from me as many of us have done similar things down the years following club and country.

    We know they won't though.

Stewards should eject any obvious away fans in home end.

We know they won't do that either though.

At Saints 2-0 win last season there were two Celtic fans standing behind us in W3.  Bad enough before we scored, but couldn't enjoy the rest of the game for worrying about what might happen.

It's definitely much worse when they win. Posted earlier in the season that they are like excitable toddlers that you just need to let tire themselves out, and they prove this again and again.

The funny thing about them is that they want it both ways. Whenver they win, they give it the David and Goliath stuff as if beating a team with a bigger budget than you is the scaling of Everest. Yet, they also have a deep, deep yearning to be taken seriously, and get very upset when fans of bigger clubs dismiss them.

    What can you do?

Off the scale levels of lack of self awareness.
