Don't worry, after Brexit we'll fall out big time with the Germans and declare war. Nothing boosts the economy like a war. We're probably going to be the baddies this time though.

We created an empire and wealth that we're still living off being the baddies

Another start and 90 mins for Hickey today. He's got to be involved for us at some level next month (even just u21) or there's something seriously up

Scotland Gemmill should definitely be picking him for the u21s

Maybe just leaving him some settling in time

Because the players who missed out are superior players.  You absolutely have to play your best team, irrespective of how the depleted team fared.  For guys like Gallagher and Considine, that might be harsh on the surface, but these guys have probably played more international football than they ever thought possible.

And, of course, the likelihood of everyone being fit is minimal.

    Wrong

    You play a winning team

Sorry, caveat, minus Stephen O'Donnell please

I know there will no doubt be injuries and/or Covid issues to deal with but Clarke is going to have a real selection headache now for this next round of matches. Some of these players have really stepped up to the plate in the last 7 days.

    Marshall

    Palmer

    Mctominay

    Gallagher

    Considine

    Robertson

    Fleck

    Mcginn

    McLean

    Dykes

    Fraser

    Selection headache over

Agreed. In his post match interview on the pitch, you could see how happy he was with the performance, he doesn't smile very often so when he does it's noticeable. He knows we're not playing teams off the park right now but keeping clean sheets and getting results builds confidence and you can start to grow from there.

I don't like the 5-3-2 and I'd much prefer we used McTominay in his actual position but with Fraser playing up next to Dykes the other night you saw flashes of how that system should work properly. Right wing back and centre back still a bit of an issue for that system though.

On Fraser, I don't know if it was deliberate from him but he certainly seemed fully committed to Scotland in his interview and there was a real enthusiasm in the things he was saying. I've had the distinct impression from him that he could take or leave International duty but that seems quite far from the truth after the other night.

It's pretty obvious Fraser picks and chooses his games

As have many or just simply canned it

Which would all go away if we could qualify for something again

One of the main reasons that remote learning wasn't seen as realistic was due to equity (in terms of access to equipment for online lessons, and support for learners with additional needs) and it was hard to motivate children to do the tasks that had been set.  Generally the quality of learning was inferior and was only to make the attainment gap even wider (it's already massive after the first lockdown) and, anecdotally, I've noticed a really negative change in behaviour in pupils since their return to school.  So from that point of view, keeping schools open is the right thing to do.  Perhaps I'm jaded with everything just now and being cynical but I suspect that the decision is more to do with parents than children, however.

    Blended learning will come

After the October experiment doesn't work

The majority of parents will let their kids watch tv,/own devices

Because Gauld is a skilful player , something Scotland does not have an over abundance of these days

Hopefully he will flourish in Portugal s top league this season and earn a squad call up. If so it would bring another dimension to the team

Going back to Craig Brown's days Craig Brewster was doing well in the Greek top division but never got called up to a squad which was shameful

Ryan Christie can play no 10, anyway John McGinn is currently nearest to that role and will not be moved

Gauld would have to move mountains to shift him from the starting 11

Because of the recent Covid issues, FIFA are apparently considering taking away the fact that clubs have to give up their players to their countries, or accept possible sanctions with players not being available for their next club match. If this comes to pass we can give up any hope of having Celtic players in the squad for the Serbia match. I realise that on recent Scotland form that is no real loss, but it would certainly be a blow not to get Leigh Griffiths back in, providing his physical and mental fitness continue to improve. It may also mean some of the English Premier League clubs use that to stop players from joining the squad. On the plus side, hopefully Ryan Jack would be kept at Ibrox.

If that comes to pass not one single club will release one single player

In that last WC campaign we drew at home with Lithuania, got humped away in Slovakia and England, then turned the campaign round with a few wins, then drew with Slovenia away and missed out. It didn’t seem that glorious too me, but it was close and the team was decent enough to watch towards the end.

Being a Scotland fan is debating shades of failure. Maybe we could come up with a scale from Glorious to Abject?

The home draw with English certainly qualified for gloriously failing

I suppose we have been close a few times. Strachan’s last campaign we started the campaign poorly, then came on to a game, took it to the last game again where we just fell short. Close but no play-off spot.

    Exactly

Close but no play off is the modern day glorious failure

An earlier poster thought it only counted if you were playing both the world cup finalists

Decade, singular. The qualification campaign for 2008 Euros was glorious failure IMO. In a group with both WC finalists and a quarter-finalist. Beating France home and away and Ukraine at home. Then that last game against Italy. That was a great campaign ending in our usual (glorious) failure but it was the last memorable campaign for the right reasons where we went toe to toe with the big teams and you felt we had a good chance.

Any qualification from us would be glorious

And our failure to do so from a winning position in the dying embers of a final game would be glorious failure, would it not

From memory last both strach campaigns we did that

For 2010 we went down to last game v Dutch for a play off too, and were in game till they scored last 10 mins

    08, did same

Zagorakis was player of the tournament, ably assisted by Karagounis, Katsouranis and Basinas.

Dellas and Nikopolidis kept them out at the back and Charisteas usually banged in the singular goal.
Also a special mention to Takis Fyssas, erstwhile of Hearts, who was also selected in the team of the tournament.

Otto Rehhagel was the master tactician who as well as subsequently taking Greece to two World Cup qualifications had also previously guided Werder Bremen to two Bundesligas and a European trophy. I think he was actually linked with the Scotland job at one point; somewhat tenuously, I would imagine, as he knocked back the chance to manage his native Germany to stay with the Greeks.

Was the beginning, of boring as f**k to watch, 5 at the back 1 up front football though

Greece's midfield was solid in all passages of play.  We could only dream to have midfield that could do the basics of Greece

I think our midfield is our only area we can talk up

    Mcginns fast becoming a talisman

But aye they two or three solid midfielders in that Greek team, forget their names

    Kastouranis?

People keep saying this as if glorious failure is our thing.

We've not even had any of that for ages.  Abject, pitiful failure is our thing.

We snatched a draw and qualification/or play off (with Irelands amazing win) from the jaws of victory v Poland for euro 16

We threw away a play off spot v Slovenia after dragging ourselves back into contention with several wins for Russia 18

Glorious failure has remained a constant

    People don't care.

People are bored of Covid that could kill them. Most people especially the richest and ruling class couldn't care less about kids starving to death especially not people of different ethnicity.

    Who's starving to death

    Third world I guess

    That's always happened before covid
