Was it explained how they arrived at these regional groupings - in particular how the Northern 'half' in R2 ended up with 13 clubs in just 4 ties, while the Southern 'half' ended up with 18 clubs across 6 ties?

Allowing for Ross County withdrawal you can see how R1 was done: you've got the 5 most northerly B teams and 5 most northerly actual clubs; ditto the 6 most southerly. (Of course this gives the absurdity of Hearts B and Hibs being 'north' whilst Spartans - who Hearts B actually groundshare with - are simultaneously 'south'... but such has happened before).

However this seems to have been abandoned in R2 with only 3 actual clubs added to north against 6 in south. Why were Stenhousemuir and Stirling Albion not placed in North half - i.e. to give 5 ties in each.

I've tried to work it out before, no idea how they do it but it's no surprise. They've ruined what used to be a great competition by shoe-horning their 'big team' buddies inany way possible. It seems NOTHING in Scottish football is allowed to happen without being infiltrated by the OF curse.

Is there not a B team tournament that these teams/players can play in... Maybe link it with a proper B/reserve league... :whistle

Yep I've seen those names suggested on Twitter, along with Lafferty also being available and a possible option.

This is the second time there's been a social media post which has hinted/alluded to rumours EK would be signing Goodwillie, that's clearly deliberate and in quite poor taste..

It’s cringy as fk, proper embarrassing to think it’s appropriate and to string it out for so long, can’t be good for the club’s image

Its more or less in the middle, football wise more Dunfermline supporting than Cowden. Re Stuart Adamson although a Pars fan I used to see him at a few midweek Cowden games back in the day.

Although a Dunfermline band none of the Skids came from there originally - Stuart - Crossgates, Richard Jobson - Ballingry, Bill Simpson - Lochgelly and Tam Kellichan - Cowdenbeath.

Wasn’t enough room for a whole Zal plus another band in 1 town 😏

There's a huge irony in that substitutes were brought in firstly at the highest levels and then the numbers were increased. This filtered down to the lowest levels of the sport and, inevitably meant that clubs were drawn into using the maximum number of substitutes permitted.

Clubs at the lowest levels of the game have gone from being just 11 players with a few reserves to being 11 plus substitutes plus reserves so there are more players per team than there once was. Inevitably this means that there are fewer teams but more players failing to get into starting line-ups. It's a crazy situation.

In addition, the use of substitutes has meant that the pace of the whole game has been raised and lasts for the full 90 minutes. It is arguable that this has lead to more injuries to players i.e. you are more likely to pick up a damaging contact injury if the pace of the game doesn't decrease towards the end as it used to do.

Does the use of substitutes need to be reduced outside the top levels of the sport so that there can be more teams and more players getting the chance to be in the starting line-up. Players are less likely to stay with a team if they're just used as substitutes or reserves and more likely to spend Saturday afternoons elsewhere.

What's other's experience of this? Thoughts?

It's a good question. I've tried to give my opinion 3 times now and each time contradicted myself!

Without going into too much detail, I think they found a happy medium with allowing 5 subs from 7 over 3 stoppages. That seemed to work well for both starting 11 and squad players as it meant not risking injuries, while the squad players would have a semi-regular role of closing out (strangling) a game or going out to make something special happen.

It also allows a sub keeper. I don't know if other league were the same but ours was 5 allowed on from only 5, so it sometimes was worth the risk not having a sub keeper stripped... or making the sub keeper relearn how to play at CM

Suppose the standard of the Lowland is becoming stronger each year so last few seasons is really showing where Edinburgh Uni are or eventually be, (unless they change), relegated and even if they survive, any team coming up from the EOSFL or the WOSFL won’t be considered as relegation fodder making it harder for the likes of Edi Uni and other team to be far from the bottom consistently

Definitely. I believe their 'true level' would be around EoS Div 1(ish), beside Heriot Watt but I still think they are better than a few teams still in the LL at the moment so it will all depend on when they EVENTUALLY fall through the LL trapdoor.

Merging the South Challenge Cup & Junior cup, inviting clubs in the Highland League & North Caledonian League (up to them whether or not they will take it but can at least offer them) & re-name it SFA Challenge Trophy or so, with the SFA running it, showpiece final at Hampden & a decent payment for travel costs would be great & doable. But the old divide is an issue, not to mention the fact that the SFA doesn't give a f*ck about this level of football...

It doesn't help there's members of the WoS board who are actively promoting a rival competition while completly ignoring the SCC, they can't even be bothered to update the cup-tied players list if last season’s fiasco is anything to go by

25 players for 2 teams is overkill. Are you telling me that 7+ players are missing everyweek?

Cap the signings to 18 maximum and let everyone find a team, get a game and then water will find its own level.

25 players for 1 amateur squad is pushing it with the amount of call offs and players moving on as the season goes on.

7 call offs per game would be a good weekend for some teams!

  8. Clubs throwing "big money" around for SoS level players is suicide. Clubs cost enough to run!

Do we have a problem now where even amateur players won't play unless they are being paid?

The same is happening in the North Caley League and it's madness... as for the actual amateur leagues, they're even worse!

If a player at that level came along asking for a match fee, they should be getting laughed out the place

Bishop’s Stortford are about to enter their second stint in the National League North plus throw in the likes of Gloucester and Hereford into that section and it’s a joke.
Basically the cut off point for the National League is almost the River Severn to the South West and Hertfordshire to the North of London. The FA are equally as daft as the SFA.

There’s no “cut off line”, it’s whoever are the BEST 40(or 48) teams at that level, then they split them ‘north’ and ‘south’.

On paper it’s the best way but in the real world it sometimes isn’t.

Where exactly would you split England? There’s no real border/barrier through the middle and everywhere in the middle is well connected. We have the Cairngorms so regions works for us, it just means the south has more strong clubs then the north but it should be an issue with only 42 national places available… then there’s only the Dundee to Aberdeen corridor to sort out, which we still nearly managed to have a civil war over! 😂

Think this will be their final season in the Lowland League, unless they have something special up their sleeves.

I think they'll be ok, it's quite rare that they are this bad. They'll not last to long in the LL but they'll do what they've alway done in the EoS, probably Div 1-ish beside Heriot Watt eventually

Hasnt this amazing English system got a London team playing in a ‘Northern League’ below the national conference or something?

If you look at the North league and the South league, I'd probably rather be in the north league tbh.

Travelling around the M4 corridor and getting down to Devon/Cornwall or even the Kent coast from even Essex is a total nightmare!

At least the North division all have straight-ish roads leading to them all!

Anyway.... fk copying it in Scotland, a "north" league with Albion Rovers, Cumbernauld Colts and Linlithgow sounds brutal

The only way to stave off the immediate introduction of the Conference League was to vote for the admission of B teams into the Lowland League. If you'd been at the Cowdenbeath supporters' meeting you'd understand why.

Let's not start this again, please!
