I’m sure yesterday McKenna and Nouble were interchangeable with McK farther forward at least half the time.  I also describe Luke Donnelly as a classic No. 10 and Joel N shares a number of similar positional characteristics Tho fairly unique).  So in conclusion… does it mean we actually lack a “genuine” striker and a surfeit of No. 10s?  Who cares - I notice Mike McK leads the goal scoring charts for the Division.

2 goals in 6 starts aint a genuine striker, id say Nouble is a handful and absolute menace and has many good traits, but a natural born finisher he isnt. If he was he wouldnt be here put it that way.

I’d say go with the strongest team, keep momentum going and get a run in this cup.

Thats Dick's way sadly, and when someone picks up an injury or suspension the squad players are not match fit. Seems stupid not to give others game time but can see your point in wanting a run in the cup, but also is a cup run worth more than keeping a squad happy and fit?

As much as Donnelly has popped up with a few goals this season and watching him play on a fair few occasions now I still don't really know what his best position is. Part of that may be because we don't play to his strengths.

Play football, and you will see a player, play hit and hope then it all comes down to luck. That isnt his game, you can see he has a good touch, can pass and move, lumping a ball up in the air with little to no support isnt going to get the best out of anyone.

Last week everyone says it was his best match, this week he gets shifted position, gets no service and the fans are on his case again. Heard fans before the game questioning why he was even starting. He overran with the ball at one point and lost it, heard some fans saying get him off.

Other players making mistakes all over the park, not a word said. Think the big man will never please anyone at Arbroath.

Because hes a big guy, does not mean long balls is his strength.

When he was signed, Arbroath confirmed he was a midfielder/forward

When he played with Celtic, he was a Midfielder/No10.

Not sure he was ever a target man from the people ive spoken too.

IMO we are not using him to the best of his ability, same can be said for many others though, guess you need to fit in with how DC wants to play, and thats hard to argue with, whether we like the football being played, hes kept us up, he clearly gets results, but we need to grind them out at times and it will never be pretty.

Inverness could easily have been ahead in the first half. Scott Stewart was totally exposed at right back on several occasions. Having weathered that we should have taken the points. Young Clark is talented but maybe not ready for this level. He definitely has a crucial mistake in his play most games.
Nouble was a revelation today and well on his way to being a favourite. Like many I question the subs. Bobby should have stayed on and I don’t understand the logic of bringing Gav on at the end. Paterson could have injected some pace against a tiring defence.
A missed opportunity to make a winning start, today.

Im glad someone else seen this, that ball over the top to Tom Walsh worked time after time in the first half, strangely Tom Walsh moved over to the right after about 35 mins. If he had any end product it could have been so different. Not blaming Stewart, I know it isnt his position, but a blind man could see he was massively exposed at times, there was multiple diagonal balls over the top that left Walsh with tons of space.

I can see the reason for taking off Linn in certain circumstances but not yesterday. The obvious subs for me was Hilson for Donnely with McKenna going central to give Stewart more cover and Craigan for Clark. We have been playing well the last few weeks minus a few defensive blunders. To change the formation and tactics from what was very successful the last few games seemed strange.

Nouble is starting to blow off the cobwebs and he will be a handful for defences. If we can secure a decent loan signing up top we will have a chance this season.

I know people like to hammer the lads up top, but id say id struggle to remember any service at all coming to them at all, simply hitting and hoping for the best, big Nouble can handle him self and looks like a good find, but we cant keep hitting him, and bypassing the other 10 players on the park. Little to no service at all, think people need to look at other areas of the park, forwards can only do so much with no service. Doesnt matter who plays up top they get battered, and to be fair the service is shocking.

Really do not get what big Luke brings to this team ok he got a goal today but that aside it was like playing with a man down this has been the same for 3 seasons now he came into the team at the time we had Ryan Wallace (I know he was not everyone's cup of tea) and displaced him think back to what Wallace gave us(goals) I know who I would rather have I really do not like being negative about our players but if we stick with him he needs to play as a two . I thought we played ok today considering we had a makeshift defence and little on the bench their keeper had some terrific saves and could have won by 3 or more

IMO hoofing the ball up to someone whos up top on their own, with little to no service is always going to struggle. Dont see anyone else who has filled that slot when Lukes been injured doing any better. Maybe time to go with a slightly different formation as you say, or try something else out. Hitting the ball up to someone, with no midfielders or anyone to play off is always going to be a thankless task regardless of who you bring in.

But Luke is a number 10, not someone who plays up top himself, that is evident for anyone to see.

Yeh he was good, but far to hot and cold, has he even scored yet? I realise it's hard if he doesn't get the service but as a striker his goals to game ratio is no where near good enough,

    Now here is the thing

    1. Go back to pre season, count the goals to games ratio from LD, now count his minutes to goals ratio this season, hes barely started any games, he was flying in pre season then randomly dropped, he then lacks fitness and when forced to play with no service, what else do you expect. Arbroath have 5 goals to their name in the league, so to blame LD for this is wrong IMO. People talk about his good control and link upplay, how about this scenario, we all know he isnt an out and out striker, he is being played up there to hold the ball up and link up play.

How many chances does he get in a game realistically, any striker is going to struggle when there is no clear cut chances. The style of play and service isnt anywhere near good enough. What will also happen is when you start against a team like hearts and the team gets battered, LD will be on the bench for the inverness game, theres no consistency.

Bounce game last Monday, LD plays centre mid, scores a hat trick.

So id say its tactics, service and playing the guy out of position, while expecting him to be hot every game is just unrealistic expectation.

How can anyone be hot, when its a game of hit and hope, its down to pretty much sheer luck if arbroath get a clear cut chance. Nobody will be pinging n goals for fun in this team, its how they play.

Playing a big guy up top, who is better as a no10 or in the middle of the park really would make a lot more sense, but given we dont use a no10, we dont have a target man to hold up the ball LD has filled that gap.

Who does that blame lie with? Sure its the big guy running about upfront, 1 against 4 getting little to no service :D:D:D

Sad to say you are wrong I'm afraid.  No reason why I would have 2 accounts. But if someone else has similar views to mine, so be it, just as others have similar views to you.

But you really should avoid jumping to conclusions without factual basis.

Bit hard to pull facts up on strangers on a forum.

but the fact you thanks me for my opinions personal or not at the end of the post is what made me jump to that conclusion. Given i was speaking to the “ gone fishing “ account and you thanked me for those opinions theres not really any other conclusion i can jump to.

but gone fishing was the one making assumptions and now your telling me what i should or shouldnt do.

real bossy bunch you two eh

its a forum where you can say as you please but telling people what they shoilr or shouldnt do does make you both sound two of a kind.

enjoy your saturday night, and thanks for the input, ill sleep a whole lot better tonight having had some of your wise words.

What is his goals ratio per game? Pretty poor for a forward who plays in a strikers role.

It's not personal, but I just don't think that he is a Championship level player. At the moment we don't have an out and out striker and when Mikey McKenna is asked to do that he does a better job of it than Donnelly. We really need to get someone who can score regularly from central striking position in, hopefully in the January transfer window.

Having said that, what quality striker at Championship level would be willing to come to a part time club? So getting one may not be possible, but if Donnelly is to keep his place in the team it would be better to play him in a position he is more suited to instead of up front on his own. Then, if he gets more involved in games I'd be happy to change my opinion of him

But as it is he just isn't up to the role he is being asked to play up front. Not at this level anyway. But that's just my opinion. Don't expect everyone to agree with them.

But thanks for your opinions, personal as they are and basing them on having no actual knowledge of me (or my ego).

Ahh so you use two accounts on here?

Opinions are always part of the game and we all pay our money to follow and watch the team and have an opinion.

Goals to games ratio is as high as any other striker in the team, noone is saying anyone is a championship standard player or not the crux of the team is in the same boat.

its just weird when donnelly was scoring the gone fishing account goes very quiet, when games are not won the same player kops the abuse.

but each to their own ill just stick my 2p worth in too.

Dear o dear lichteee I have prob been supporting Arbroath longer than you have been born . Such an immature post reflects your age or lack of intelligence. Why be personal when that’s my opinion about Donnelly and also iam not alone in that but hey couldn’t really give a f..k what you think. Thank you and sleep tight

Haha the whole dear o dear passive agressive good night may work for most.

anyone who can read can see i said opinions are all good and welcome.

you make assumptions on my age, intellegence and so on, clearly a man who makes assumptions.

heres mine, you are a sad pathetic old man, single of course and not a lot going on in life with nothing better to do than chip in with snide comments on a team he allegedly supports.

a loser to the extreme where you wont sleep tight and the fact ive called you out as a pathetic sad old man who has a one track opinion and little to no knowledge of the game this will annoy the life out of you and you do care about what others think. Thats why your on here bashing others as your insecure about yourself.

smile old boy it might never happen

    you sleep well 😂🤣

    Well said mate

Big LD been superb this season

The big mans been bursting his chops up there, giving it 100% which we can start to see, couple of games and people are slamming him is annoying, even big Shankland can have a quiet game at times, fairly easy to mark these guys out of a game when your up top on your own against 4 defenders :D

  12. 42 minutes ago, gone fishing said:

Donnelly has had the longest run in the team regarding our strikers think that’s 5 without scoring.

How come everytime we get beat you have a pop at Donnelly?

Seems more of a personal thing to me, if you look at your comments, your constantly on at him, you sit there and say nothing when goals are going in, i dont think you have the brain power or football knowledge to realise playing with one upfront and playing it to someones head ( bare in mind its hard to control or pass a ball with your head ) that you expect anyone to be banging goals in left right and centre. With all due respect i dont think you will ever have any striker playing that kinda game being prolific, but Donnelly has done a great job yet you want him dropped for not scoring in the last 5.

    Who you replacing him with?

Bit of positivity is always welcome, not whining like a little bitch constantly about a specific player, especially when you dont have the brain cells to appreciate the overall play or the job that player does for the team. Hes being played up top whilst hes a midfielder as hes about the only one who can do any kind of job doing that graveyard shift.

Dick doesnt want to play with 2 up top he has stated that publically and its always going to be a case of hit and hope and dig out results, now you will argue that Dicks a genius for such tactics as he will likely grind out some results and keep us in the league, yet you want to slaughter players specifically.

We dont have the same strength as other teams in the league and need to do something so we dont get battered on a weekly basis.

Its not going to be the first time you have done this, and im sure it wont be the last, and you are entitled to whatever opinion you have, but personal dislikes or whatever seems to be your agenda, which shows you kinda bloke you are, and also the fact your football knowledge could be written on the back of a fag packet and you hand pick people out on a regular basis, seems a bit odd its always the same 2-3 players you bitch about, which is fine by the way, the irritaing part is you have no fucking clue what your on about and just talk pish about the game.

Maybe with such a big ego and gob you should give Dick a call and maybe get yourself a game.

  13. poor game has to be said, cant win them all but be good to change it up and zip balls into c***s feet now and then and maybe use the 5 bodies in midfield for periods of the game, bit of ball retention here and there give the defence a breather wouldnt go a miss. cannae keep playing long balls all game every game surely?

But keep it going Uncle Dick just please try and change it now and then

  14. Great result, we need to stop sitting back after going a few goals up though as that may lead to luck changing, done the same against thistle too. Bobby Linn was class again as was big Luke, and great to see an overall solid performance from the team Whatley great in the middle of the park and Ricky Little, just a solid reliable and consisten graft from him as always. We shouldnt be sitting on a 2 goal lead against teams like Alloa, i get that against other full time teams, we need to remember we are as good as most others in this league on their day.

. Donnelly proving me wrong week by week and had a game

Curious to know what you base that judgement on, a centre mid playing as a lone striker is always going to be a tough shift.

take today for example the only guy who can control a ball and keep composed, the only guy who done a one two which led to the goal.

by far the best Arbroath player with a ball at feet.

even when arbroath played celtic, celtic asked Dick why the hell they are playing him upfront.

would you call a plumber a shite mechanic?

remember he is being used out of position, getting about 10 touches per game and regardless of whether he holds the ball up the midfield are so far back its pointless.

Glad hes showing some form, but in reality playing as a lone striker for arbroath is more about luck, than getting any real service from any real football being played.

strange at 3-1 up you would think Barcelona were on the ball, knocking the ball about and keeping possesion.

great result but still think Dicks tactics leave a lot to be desired, but arguably its getting results.

I don’t think he can play as a lone striker though.

Would be good if he was a striker to begin with though.

Because someone is 6ft 3 does not make them a striker.

Queens Park started Luke upfront and launching the ball up to him, he ended up in and out the team until they played him in Midfield or at best as a no10 started to play well and got his move to Stranraer.

Stranraer started Luke upfront launching the ball up to him again in and out the team until the realised he was more useful further back, he starts playing well in a midield role and gets a move to Arbroath.

Arbroath come in for Luke, Dick says i know your not a striker we will play you in your best position, Luke signs, Dick says play up top on your own and we will hang you out to dry, its clear there is not enough pace for Luke to cause problems as a lone striker, its clear that heading a ball is not his best asset.
