Can you get a suntan through glass?

I was thinking this the other day when I was in the car. You know how they talk about a "truckers' tan", through leaning one arm out the open window. If the window is closed, but the sun is shining brightly onto your arm inside the car, can you still get a tan?

Aye, you can.

The glass acts as a sort of sun screen so it would take a lot more exposure to tan or burn.

Taken from an Aussie Cancer Council fact sheet

Does UV radiation come through glass?

Ordinary car window glass filters out about 97% of the UVB radiation and about 37% of UVA radiation.. It is approximately

equivalent to a good sunscreen, which means that if you’re sitting in the sun during a long trip you could still get burnt from the

amount of radiation coming through the glass. Laminated windscreens block all of the UVB radiation and about 80% of the

UVA radiation.

It's the UVA radiation you have to watch for though. I don't think you'll have too much bother in Scotland! :P

You can't, you've caught the bad AIDS.

Surely it's worth giving the chicken leg remedy a try first?
