Who's Going To Uni?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone on here ever stayed in accomodation run by Unite? One of my flatmates in halls is considering it for next year but is a bit unsure about what they'd be like.

I'm currently blacklisted by them due to refusing to pay the £1000 in damages they tried to charge me and my pals. Complete joke of an organisation.

The irony of being blacklisted *by* a Union mustn't be lost on you.

My friend stayed in the one behind Buchanan Bus station in Glasgow and I ended up spending pretty much every weekend there. It seemed pretty good and I never heard any complaints from him or his 2/3 flatmates that I interacted with a lot.

I think he got quite lucky with the draw, the three guys that were there for the entire time were very good and the other room had two people over the year who seemed decent too (though I didn't see them very much).

Depends on the place I imagine.

We stayed in Unite accommodation last year. The rooms were small and awkwardly set out to make the most of the space. For example the bed was elevated well off the floor which was a pain. The kitchen equipment was very basic too.

On the plus side heating was free and maintenance was generally pretty quick.

In my case I moved in with 11 friends and it was just a fantastic year with a whole floor taken up by our group. The accommodation wasn't great but with the right people it does its job.

This is probably common sense but if your friend knows anyone staying there just now he should ask them for a quick look around and how they feel about the place because our flats did not resemble the show flat.

ETA - On the deposit issue I've heard stories about fines etc. We were lucky in that everyone in our group got our full deposit back. That seems a fairly rare occurrence from what I've heard.

In my experience, I try to steer students away from Unite at all opportunities. Generally, they're overpriced, some are poor in terms of responses to things and a pain in the arse to get a hold of.

That said, they do seem to vary enormously from place to place. Some of the London ones were absolute abominations, some couldn't have been more helpful.

The total lack of consistency across them is just remarkable.

What city are you in? It may be worth considering similar companies to Unite, but not Unite if you get me.

One of my friends stayed here for 3 years and never had any complaints about it: http://glasgow.victoriahall.com/

I don't know what sort of price you're talking, I didn't bother looking. That's the extent of my knowledge of Glasgow. If by any chance we're talking about Aberdeen I might be more help.

Glasgow. It's not me who'd be staying in them so that stuff isn't really of my concern. I'll pass along all the reviews to my flatmate and let him do his own research into it. Was just checking to see if there was a general consensus on whether Unite are any good.

Cheers for all the replies guys.

Im not particularly enjoying my life as a student - i had dropped out of college after a couple months before because i couldn't behave myself and was out drinking and eventually run out of money but now I'm a bit older and wiser i knew this wouldn't be the case when going back. I've been on the course since August and passed everything before christmas so hardly had anything to do in january and its not picked up much of yet and i feel pretty bored and out of routine, people say i should get a job which is an option but haven't really started looking yet but what i really miss is the routine and making my own money rather than living off a tight budget with my mrs. I can leave college with an HNC after one year and maybe get a good job, HND after 2 years would get a better job or then i could go to uni for another 2 years and be looking at better opportunities so it will work out in the long run just right now its pretty shite, i was never the sort of person that would be in bed at 10 on a thursday morning with nothing to do but now i feel idle as f**k despite forever going to the gym and doing what i can to help this feeling

You should be spending at least 30 hours a week on your studies. Sod the gym, hit the library.

I probably do about 24 in class time, haven't really got much piling up on me at the moment, i actually want stuff to study believe it or not

Nope, spending that amount of time suggests more a very inefficient working process, a lot of time spent social networking etc. Even at 4th year it is simply not necessary to spend that much time, with the possible exception of more specialised degrees like the law trolls or medicine.

Exercise is important for breaking up work anyway, which made the former claim even more laughable.

I quite like getting the work done straight as soon as i get it so i don't have it hanging over me, i don't put stuff off at all which is definitely a good trait to have because there are people on my course who are so far behind i wonder how they can manage to f**k stuff up so badly. i haven't got out of 2nd gear really so far but i get the feeling its going to get really hard or I'm going to lose interest and look for a job when i finish my hnd

Probably by 3/4th year uni?

I agree with vikingTON, doing outside things such as exercise is really important, it was one of the first things our Uni course coordinator said to us at the start of term.

I'd agree with the folks who say to et a job. I have one around uni and whilst the money is essential for me, I find that it gives my days structure as well as forcing me to plan my work - if I know I am working on Friday I have to do my essay on Thu, that kind of thing.

As I know I can't move study time about I actually get more study done than days where I think I have all day and end up wasting it all and doing nothing!

For each course (certainly the ones I teach) it is expected that students do at least 10 hours a week. That includes 4 hours of face-to-face teaching time, and the remainder independent studying. A lot of students just don't get that the class time is supposed to be the tip of the iceberg. To get a good grade, you need to do a lot more work and demonstrate that.

I do as much exercise as possible so i feel good in that sense, think what lets me down is the lack of routine which is probably common for most people who have worked for years and then become a student. I don't find anything in the course hard really but there is going to be a lot more that i have to do in my own time but I'm looking forward to that, Im more looking forward to it being over and me having a decent job but by that time i could be 30 :(

I agree with VT as well. I'm in my final year and I probably do around 15/20 hours per week of independent studying, and I'm further ahead with my workload than anyone I know. Whilst I'm not getting outstanding results (sitting with a 65% average) I genuinely don't think that more hours would increase my average.
