The passenger wasn't denied boarding; he clearly had a reserved seat and had taken it.  What this looks like was more of a denial to transport, which airlines can do if a passenger is inappropriately dressed....or not dressed sometimes, drunk, aggressive, unable to fit into seats etc. etc.  However none of those reasons cover freeing up seats for airline employees.

They asked for volunteers which seems fine, but once none where coming forward can they then, randomly select passengers to be removed and if none comply, then claim that they are aggressive/disruptive and deny transport which then allows them to forcibly remove passengers?

Dunno but they asked him and he refused and then the police got involved and it was teh police that slapped him: not airline staff.

Airlines don't mess around with this shit. You do what yer fucking told. Everyone in the world knows this. And you don't run onto planes after being forced off them earlier.

f**k him.

Could you try being a bit more deferential?

Here's what my pal said about it on facebook:

Capture.PNG.8869e2735c3b5aa4f05fe534d9b0e9d8.PNG

So, to recap, he had no legal recourse after being selected to leave. He would have been properly recompensed for the inconvenience as well. He had this explained to him. He lied about needing to be back home to treat patients. He was told, repeatedly, to get off the plane and refused. The airline staff, correctly, requested airline security to deal with him. After they escorted him from the plane he ran back onto the plane and had to physically removed from the aircraft. He then started acting it and pretending to be knocked out and mumbling "kill me... kill me... kill me" because he was fucking at it. He held up one plane full of passengers, probably another plane that the United staff were en route to, out of selfishness. I got no time for him.

If you wanna argue that airlines overbooking their flights is a dick move you wont hear an argument from me. If you wanna say the airport security were heavy handed there's an argument to be made there but there's a huge over reaction to this and if he had just done what he was told by the polis it wouldn't be an issue.

Maybe. But not as much of a dick as someone who is given the choice of making everyone's life's easier, getting bumped up to 1st class, an extra $1,000 dollars in their pocket and all for the sake of a few hours extra waiting time OR holding everyone up, getting huckled and just being a beligerent arse and chooses the latter

It wasn't a few hours, the next flight was the day after. The extra cabin crew weren't due to fly from Louisville till the next day, they could easily have taken a taxi. Meanwhile the doctor is being treated in a Chicago hospital. United were taking the piss, big style.

Ask your pal what was the legal right to refuse transport from United Airlines.  Bare in mind, under United airlines Contract of Carriage, no where does it state you can be denied transport because they need the seats for staff.

Airlines can ask for volunteers at this point, but I don't believe they can legally remove passengers if none come forward.  Once boarded they have agreed to the contract of Carriage.

Regardless of the legal rights and wrongs, anyone who agrees with how the airline acted in this matter is a c**t.

I think the point is the guy was a c**t as well.

And separating the airline from airport security is important too.

When buses and trains are crowded folk just stand in the aisle.
Why can't they do this on planes?

Michael o'leary wanted to do this on Ryanair, probably because of how hilarious take off would be.

I was on an domestic flight in Russia and people do stand in the aisle. Some wummin had a couple of live chickens in a cage as well.

Still better than traveling with United IMO.

Just seen someone pushing what must be a six or seven year old boy around in a pram barely large enough to hold him, dummy in mouth (the boy) and kicking out in a tantrum of the highest order, constantly throwing a dinosaur toy to the ground.

Pretty sure it's not a special needs child in a makeshift wheelchair.
