Scottish Labour's Iain Gray would cap council tax rise

Well at least we can't accuse BBC Scotland of not giving the Labour Party full and fair coverage... I make that 5 news stories today. So far.

I'm surprised the BBC Scotland Politics team haven't collapsed due to the sudden workload! That's 5 stories in a day on a site that usually gets 5 updates in a month!

Mhm.

What about these BNP lies, myths and falsehoods:

BNP Councillor Richard Barnbrook claimed that two schools in his area were holding "Muslim days" on the anniversary of 7/7. This was false.

On social housing in Barking, same councillor says that "they (asylum seekers) are flooding in". 4 of 20250 social houses in Barking and Dagenham are occupied by refugees. That's 0.019%!

In the same area, they claimed burglaries were up 79% (they went down 11.7%), robberies were up 80% (they went up 5%), violent crime was up 61% (it went up by 1.2%) and that 33% of residents were from ethnic minority groups (15% were).

The BNP claimed that Barking and Dagenham Council had a secret scheme to give African families £50,000 to buy local houses. This was a lie.

So basically, the BNP are a bunch of liars. Why would you vote for them?

They will make put the Great back into Great Britain.

Six?! Six stories in one day! Someone throw Brian Taylor a pie, he's going to need it!

With this many fair and full news stories about Labour, I'm half expecting Unionist Brian to blog about something to do with Alex Salmond and his woes, lets check!

Not, all in all, the most comfortable session for Alex Salmond.

He was very far from being cast down - but he was undoubtedly confronted vigorously by his political opponents. In a sense, you could see the shape of the election campaigns to come from all three of those opponents. For Labour, Iain Gray majored on teachers. Party research indicates that the education sector is notably disquieted: hence the questioning. Mr Gray reminded the First Minister of specific SNP pledges on teacher numbers and class sizes. The FM spoke of progress being made - and of an economic crisis created by Labour.

Ah, retorted Mr Gray, but how about those promises...

Therein lies the Labour approach. Analyse, scrutinise and target the SNP by highlighting their specific promises.

But to be fair, they are picking up on this story at least!

Alex Salmond calls UK green levy offer 'giant swizz'

First Minister Alex Salmond has attacked an offer by the UK government to grant Scottish ministers access to funds earmarked for green projects.

UK ministers have agreed to free up £250m of Scotland's fossil fuel levy, raised by taxing energy firms. The money will be made available for renewable energy projects but in return, the Treasury would take money out of the Scottish budget.

"Yes, you can finally have that money you're entitled to anyway, but we're going to take something back in return."

Speaking of the BBC, why are they pushing this? These stories have all been published in the last 24 hours, all but one specifically on the BBC Scotland website...

Scots back 'keeping' summer time

Scots are narrowly in favour of the UK switching to British Summer Time all year round, a survey has suggested. About 3,000 people took part in the internet survey by energy firm Npower, as the UK prepares to move the clocks back one hour this weekend. Keeping the clocks one hour ahead of GMT would provide more daylight in the evenings, when most people are active.

Time change would benefit Scotland, claims report

Switching Scotland to Central European Time would reduce road casualties, improve health and boost the economy, according to new research. A report by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) claimed shifting the clocks forward by one hour all year round would benefit Scotland. It said the limited number of daylight hours north of the border must be used "as efficiently as possible".

But the Scottish government said it opposed any change.

A question of time: changing the clocks

The Policy Studies Institute has released a report arguing that Scotland would benefit from a switch to Single/Double Summer Time (SDST). Such a move would bring the country into line with much of continental Europe, where winter is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and summer time two hours ahead of GMT.

Putting clocks back damages our health, says expert

Not putting the clocks back this weekend would help people exercise more and stay healthier, says an expert. Dr Mayer Hillman, a public policy specialist at the Policy Studies Institute wants the UK to keep British Summer Time in winter.

All but one published in the area of most opposition to a timezone change, Scotland, and all in the last 24 hours. Why? Are they preparing us for a new act from the Con-Dem nation? A quick google shows this story running everywhere. And its funny, because two weeks ago, when this was being discussed in the London Parliament, a Tory MP had this to say on the matter of Scotland:

Greg Knight from East Yorkshire told the House of Commons: "Why do we still have to go through this ridiculous ritual of putting our clocks back every autumn, thereby plunging the nation into darkness by mid-afternoon?"

He asked Commons Leader Sir George Young: "Will you give an undertaking that the Government will not seek to talk out a private member's bill on this subject, which is due to come before the House shortly?

"I suspect the only opponents will be a handful of Scots. If that is the case, shouldn't they be told: 'You've got your own parliament, if you don't like it go away and give yourselves your own time zone'."

Is this David Cameron's idea of governing with "Respect"?

It's a fucking clock, who cares?

All the media, the house of Parliament, and it appears, the English as a whole. Plus, did you not grow up in Aberdeen? Thats further north than I was, you want it to be even colder and darker in the winter mornings? Why do people have to change it?

Anyway, I've copied the post in a dedicated clock chat thread!

Labours latest belter.... 'free newspapers for 18 year olds'.

Policy plans published by Labour in a report this weekend reveal a tax double whammy and a massive black hole in their spending plans even before other announcements are added, the SNP have claimed.

This latest tax bombshell, which will cost Scottish tax payers an additional £3000, comes after Labour confirmed they would seek to increase Council Tax in Scotland.

Figures published by the SNP indicate that in order to pay for this new wish-list of pledges, including free newspapers for all 18 year olds, Labour would hit every Scottish household with an additional tax bombshell of almost £3,000 over the course of the next Parliament.

Their new policy proposals, detailed in the report by their Scottish Policy Forum and adopted by their annual conference, include no funding details. These initial calculations suggest that in order to fill their budget black hole Labour would need to use their ‘Calman Tax’ proposal in order to hike Scottish income taxes by 5p in the pound.

The analysis of Labour’s policy report reveals:

  • The average cost per household would be £738.73 a year or £2,954 over the four years of the next parliament.
  • There are no proposals to cut costs in Labour’s policy report.
  • To fill their budget black hole would require an income tax rise in Scotland – using Labour’s Calman tax – of 5p in every pound
  • This is on top of Labour’s plans for an increase in the Council Tax, delivering a tax double whammy to hard pressed families.

Key proposals and Costs include:

  • Reinstate GARL - £188m
  • Extend concessionary travel to off peak rail - £25m
  • Double Saltire Prize - £10m
  • Increase student support - £89m
  • Free newspaper for all 18 year olds - £15m
  • Abolish PFI hospital car parks - £34.5m
  • Right to an apprenticeship - £26m
  • Provide recycling bins in shopping centres – £6.7m
  • Greater investment in forests - £40m

Surely the increased levels of council tax listed can't be right?
