btb
Looking at the tables it's interesting to see that most of the bottom 2/3 clubs in each division have already changed managers this season, the notable exceptions being two of @Skyline Drifters Untouchables - Annan/Peter Murphy & Livingston/David Martindale.

Part of the reason this thread began was to track the ever shorter tenures of managers and those who bucked the trend. I don't think it's any coincidence that the top five are working in fairly low expectation circumstances. Two of them garnered the majority of their service before they entered the SPFL and another two have effectively reached their own ceiling already. The other one, Annan, have virtually no record for sacking managers in the last 20 years and I imagine even relegation wouldn't see Peter Murphy lose his, especially as it appears they are at least competitive at a higher level. Campbell's done a tremendous job at Arbroath but he's too old to be recruited by a full time team at this stage and Petrie apparently doesn't want full time management due to his outside job. Campbell and Petrie are effectively already working at as high a level as they can realistically achieve. Given Martindale effectively runs Livingston as a club and isn't really in the same boat as any other manager, you then need to go down to Malky McKay in 7th to find a full time manager who actually has to achieve things to avoid the sack, and he's reached 7th with just over 2 years in the job! The nature of football will inevitably mean that other than those determined to remain part time, managers either fail to achieve and get binned by itchy trigger fingers within a couple of years, or do achieve and get head hunted by bigger clubs. As has been seen with the likes of Rogers, Gerrard and Postecoglou, even the OF can't hold a high achieving manager very long. There's always a bigger job across the Border somewhere. 9 hours ago, btb said: Looking at the tables it's interesting to see that most of the bottom 2/3 clubs in each division have already changed managers this season, the notable exceptions being two of @Skyline Drifters Untouchables - Annan/Peter Murphy & Livingston/David Martindale. I never said they were "untouchable" to be fair. I said they were working to different expectations as everyone else and two of them had reached their own glass ceiling. Martindale was bordering on untouchable I guess though not sure that's the case now with their ownership shenanigans. Going by his interview last week he's close to chucking it himself. Campbell's already been moved on since I posted that anyway. Petrie's still working at the best he can realistically achieve though and I don't see Peter Murphy being under much imminent threat at Annan even if they go down (they'll at least make playoffs now). Skyline Drifter
Aberdeen again making life awkward (they did this when Craig Brown retired) by announcing today the future appointment, on a day not exactly specified, of Jimmy Thelin as their manager. It's been left as the vague "this summer" and "from June". Until Aberdeen confirm anything different I'll assume this means 1st June. If a different date becomes clear nearer the time will amend. In the meantime, if other clubs change managers between now and then they'll go in to the list ahead of him. He's not managing them yet, announced or not. Edited May 6 by Skyline Drifter

Peter Leven remains in charge until then Vacant - Ross County - Derek Adams resigned 07/02/24, Don Cowie in Interim Charge Vacant - Annan Athletic - Peter Murphy joined Queen of the South 09/05/24. No interim manager announced as season over. Vacant - Stirling Albion - Darren Young departed 13/05/24. No interim manager announced as season over. Vacant - Hibernian - Nick Montgomery sacked 14/05/24. David Gray in as caretaker manager once more. *Note Steven Naismith was appointed caretaker manager of Hearts on 9th April 2023. After a successfully spell he was given the job permanently on 7th June 2023. However, as he does not have a Pro Licence and Hearts qualified for Europe they were required to 'officially' name assistant Frankie McAvoy as manager on the same date. Naismith instead took on the title 'Technical Director'. Following Hearts elimination from European competition, Naismith was officially re-confirmed as Manager on 6th September 2023 with McAvoy reverting to assistant. As nobody surely seriously believes McAvoy was ever actually in charge, I've listed Naismith as continuous from 9th April and ignored McAvoy's official 3 month spell as manager. If the technical most recent reappointment date of 6th September is instead used for Naismith then he drops four places further down the list, in between Brendan Rodgers and Duncan Ferguson. So, updated for appointment of Peter Murphy at Queen of the South which in turn means Annan Athletic are managerless. Murphy had been Scottish football's 3rd longest serving manager with just under 7 years at Annan Athletic. It's been a long apprenticeship to reach full time football for him. Remarkably Ian Murray at Raith Rovers moves into the top 10 with just under two years in post! Obviously more changes are likely in the next few weeks. Annan will appoint someone, Ross County will need to clarify the position once their season ends, Jimmy Thelin will join Aberdeen properly. Good chance Mick Kennedy at EK will need entered in the list too though personally I'd prefer to keep Stranraer in the SPFL. EDIT - And another change in the top five within a week as Darren Young appears to have been sacked by Stirling Albion (statement isn't completely clear, he may have resigned). No word on a caretaker but with it being close season there probably isn't one given assistant James Creaney has gone too. Young had been in charge since December 2021, about two and a half years. One day longer than Dougie Imrie at Morton who now moves into the Top 5 as a result. James McPake, almost exactly two years in charge at Dunfermline, moves into the Top 10. At this moment, 20 of Scotland's clubs have changed manager within the last year. EDITED AGAIN - Nick Montgomery gone from Hibs after just 8 months in charge. A wee bit harsh perhaps given he had no opportunity to bring in his own players but Hibs are just lurching through managers.
