Steven Naismith was appointed caretaker manager of Hearts on 9th April 2023. After a successfully spell he was given the job permanently on 7th June 2023. However, as he does not have a Pro Licence and Hearts qualified for Europe they were required to 'officially' name assistant Frankie McAvoy as manager on the same date. Naismith instead took on the title 'Technical Director'. Following Hearts elimination from European competition, Naismith was officially re-confirmed as Manager on 6th September 2023 with McAvoy reverting to assistant. As nobody surely seriously believes McAvoy was ever actually in charge, I've listed Naismith as continuous from 9th April and ignored McAvoy's official 3 month spell as manager.

If the technical most recent reappointment date of 6th September is instead used for Naismith then he drops eight places further down the list, in between Barry Smith and Nick Montgomery.

Updated for appointment of Duncan Ferguson at Inverness.

Billy Dodds' sacking means that over half of SPFL managers have been in position less than a year (21/41).

It's probably happened before, but it's the first time I've noticed it. It also makes the tenures of the top-5 look even more impressive.

If it hasn't happened before it certainly will have been very close. Part of the reason this thread began was to track the ever shorter tenures of managers and those who bucked the trend.

I don't think it's any coincidence that the top five are working in fairly low expectation circumstances. Two of them garnered the majority of their service before they entered the SPFL and another two have effectively reached their own ceiling already. The other one, Annan, have virtually no record for sacking managers in the last 20 years and I imagine even relegation wouldn't see Peter Murphy lose his, especially as it appears they are at least competitive at a higher level. Campbell's done a tremendous job at Arbroath but he's too old to be recruited by a full time team at this stage and Petrie apparently doesn't want full time management due to his outside job. Campbell and Petrie are effectively already working at as high a level as they can realistically achieve.

Given Martindale effectively runs Livingston as a club and isn't really in the same boat as any other manager, you then need to go down to Malky McKay in 7th to find a full time manager who actually has to achieve things to avoid the sack, and he's reached 7th with just over 2 years in the job!

The nature of football will inevitably mean that other than those determined to remain part time, managers either fail to achieve and get binned by itchy trigger fingers within a couple of years, or do achieve and get head hunted by bigger clubs. As has been seen with the likes of Rogers, Gerrard and Postecoglou, even the OF can't hold a high achieving manager very long. There's always a bigger job across the Border somewhere.

Well, Dougie runs the Academy at Spartans which might explain his longevity. But he's doing OK in the League so far and they've achieved a long held aim to get into the Scottish League

You can argue Dick is overachieving at Arbroath, Petrie has done well to give the Mo some respectability as they could have gone out of the League a few seasons back, Murphy got Annan promoted (at last?) last season and they're not one of the bigger clubs in the Scottish League and Robbie Horn similarly has presided over a very successful period for Bonnyrigg.

Updated for departure of Alan Maybury from Edinburgh City. Maybury had been the SPFL's 15th longest serving manager (13th if we ignore the pre-SPFLperiods of Dougie Samuel and Robbie Horn) despite only being in place for a week over 18 months. Only 20 of the SPFL's 42 clubs have a manager who has been in place over a year.

Updated again for appointments of Michael McIndoe at Edinburgh City and Philippe Clement at Rangers.

Updated again for departure of Brian McLean from Clyde after just over 4 months in charge.

Updated for departures of Barry Smith and Malky Mackay from Elgin and Ross County respectively. Barry Smith had been in charge of Elgin City for just two months. In contrast, Malky Mackay, with just under 2.5 years in charge was 7th on the longest serving list and 2nd amongst full time managers behind only David Martindale who effectively runs the whole club at Livingston so isn't quite in the same boat as other managers. Dougie Imrie, a month short of his 2nd anniversary in charge at Morton, becomes the next longest serving full time manager now. Derek McInnes (22 months at Kilmarnock) moves into the top ten in 10th place.

EDITED for appointments of Ian McCall at Clyde and Andy Graham at Alloa. Both appointed officially about the same time on the same day. Unclear which one was actually announced earlier as I only just read about both. I've listed McCall first as I read it first but could be other way round. Anyone know for sure?

@Skyline Drifter For what it’s worth, the Clyde tweet was time stamped 35 minutes before the Alloa tweet…neither club has a release I’ve seen with a time stamp beyond date.

Good enough for me, thanks. I don't use Twitter so had no access to see time of tweets. As it turns out then, listing McCall first was correct.

If the technical most recent reappointment date of 6th September is instead used for Naismith then he drops five places further down the list, in between Brendan Rodgers and Nick Montgomery.

Dick Campbell chucks it at Arbroath

Some media outlets reporting him as the longest serving manager in the SPFL...thought all the shite journos were on P&B

He was the manager with the longest active spell in the SPFL, I guess.

Wonder if the man that has replaced him in second will replace him at Arbroath.

It deserves more acknowledgement but I'm in no frame of mind to give it right now. Dick Campbell departs from Abroath.

Passed me by that Robin Veldman left Queens Park on Saturday.

They're being evasive with their latest announcement that Paul Nuijten is in charge for their upcoming games. Unclear if thats on a caretaker basis or a permanent appointment.

Adding to the confusion, apparently he's being assisted by Tam O'Ware, who is a player with another club. So is he only assisting through the week? He's presumably not dumping Kelty for a caretaker position.........

Vacant - Queen's Park - Robin Veldman 'departed' 08/12/23. Paul Nuijten is in charge for now. We're assuming on a caretaker basis but Queen's Park have been probably deliberately evasive on that.

Updated for the appointments of Jim McIntyre at Arbroath and Allan Hale at Elgin. Also departure of Robin Veldman from Queen's Park and appointment of Paul Nuijten, apparently on a caretaker basis.

Updated for appointment of Callum Davidson at Queen's Park.

Updated again for dismissal of Lee Bullen from Ayr United. He was Scotland's 10th longest serving manager having just passed his 2nd anniversary in charge.
