Vacant - Elgin City (Gavin price sacked 08/04/23, Charlie Charlesworth, Stevie Dunn & Ross Draper in caretaker charge)

Vacant - St Johnstone (Callum Davidson sacked 16/04/23. Steven McLean in caretaker charge)

Updated for departures of Gavin Price from Elgin City and Robbie Neilson from Hearts over Easter weekend. Price had been Scotland's 4th longest serving manager with 5.5 years in position whilst Neilson, had been 7th longest serving with just under 3 years in charge.

With Aberdeen now having confirmed Barry Robson in charge to the end of the season and Hearts doing the same with Stevie Naismith I've listed them both as "permanent" appointments. Whilst they may be temporary, they are at least medium term appointments and there clearly is not going to be a further imminent change. As both Peterhead and Elgin remain under the temporary charge of committees of players / coaches though I've left them as "vacant".

There are now only 4 managers with more than 3 years in charge of their current club, led by Dick Campbell's 7 years, 1 month at Arbroath. Stewart Petrie has 6 years 4 mths at Montrose and Peter Murphy has 5yrs 10 mths at Annan Athletic. Robbie Horn (4 years, 5 months at Bonnyrigg) is the other one. 15 clubs have changed their manager since the league season kicked off (and a further 8 changed their manager in the close season). 23 of 42 have changed manager in the past 12 months.

Updated again for departure of Callum Davidson from St Johnstone as another of the top five longest serving managers goes. He was 5th with just under 3 years in charge. Steven McLean is caretaker for now.

It's been a week long cull of managers this last week with Jamie Hamill now being the 4th binned in a week or so.  All four had been in the top 12 of longevity. Hamill had 22 months in charge at Stranraer but an 8-0 defeat and the teams below all picking up points obviously made the Board nervous.

As a result of the latest change Darren Young at Stirling Albion moves into the top 10. He's not even been there 16 months yet! 25 out of Scotland's 42 clubs have changed manager at least once since the end of last season.

Edited to add Scott Agnew's appointment at Stranraer.

Edited again for the permanent appointment of Strachan & Brown at Peterhead.

Updated for departure of Gary Bowyer from Dundee. Not clear if officially resigned, sacked, mutual consented or what. No caretaker as presumably they expect to appoint someone imminently and don't have any games for about two months.

I've also added Michael Tidser as Kelty Hearts manager replacing John Potter as of Sunday. There's no real clarity about when exactly handover is. They announced weeks ago that John Potter would leave at the end of the season and Tidser would take over. Potter was certainly in charge of the team at Palmerston on Saturday. I assume Tidser will be the one making contract decisions from Sunday so put him in from then. I suppose it might technically be 31st May or something though if that's contract expiry date for both. I doubt we'll ever get more clarity than we have now though. In practical terms it's presumably now Tidser.

Updated again for departure of Owen Coyle from Queen's Park.

29/05/23 - Tony Docherty (Dundee)

02/06/23 - Brian McLean (Clyde)

Vacant - Queen's Park (Owen Coyle resigned 15/05/23. No caretaker)

So a complex update..........................

Easy bits first. Tony Docherty appointed yesterday to the vacant position at Dundee. Steven McLean confirmed on Saturday as the permanent St Johnstone manager, though his interim caretaker spell backdates his appointment to 16th April. Ross Draper also confirmed as Elgin City boss on 25th May. He had been part of a three man team in caretaker charge prior to that from 8th April. I'm not familiar enough with the workings of Elgin City to know how exactly that worked but on the basis he was at least an equal partner before I've deemed it a continuous appointment and put him in charge from 8th April, which means he pre-dates the likes of Steven Naismith (by a day), and McLean above.

As far as I am aware Queen's Park are still managerless and without any formal caretaker. And nobody else has had a manager change?

We've also got the situations at both Aberdeen and Hearts where Barry Robson and Steven Naismith were given caretaker stints to the end of the season which we've now reached, so those clubs need to decide whether to formally confirm them in charge or move in a different direction, although for Aberdeen in particular that would be a major surprise.

And then we've the complication at the bottom. Albion Rovers have been relegated so I've removed Sandy Clark from the list. Spartans are the new SPFL member and manager Dougie Samuel has apparently been there since Noah started building his ark! Well not quite but he's been there since 2012. Definitely since the start of the 12/13 campaign. I'm not sure it's 100% accurate but the date I sourced suggests 5th June 2012? If anyone knows different please let me know?

That of course complicates the top end of the list as the longest serving manager in the SPFL is immediately Dougie Samuel, coming up on 11 years in charge and replacing Dick Campbell whose 7 and a bit years seem positively apprentice-like alongside! However, of course Campbell continues to be the longest serving manager WITHIN the SPFL with Samuel having spent his entire career to date outside it.

EDITED - Brian McLean installed at Clyde as Head Coach replacing Jim Duffy.

Vacant - Celtic (Ange Postecoglou resigned to take Tottenham job 06/06/23. No caretaker)

*Note - Steven Naismith was appointed caretaker manager of Hearts on 9th April 2023. After a successfully spell he was given the job permanently on 7th June 2023. However, he does not have a Pro Licence and, as a European entrant Hearts manager has to officially have one so they named assistant Frankie McAvoy, who does have a Pro Licence, as Head Coach and made Naismith Technical Director instead. It is clear however to all that he remains in practice the manager in charge and so I've listed him as manager from the original appointment date!

New post for the departure of the SPFL's 10th longest serving manager as Ange Postecoglou leaves Celtic to join Tottenham Hotspur. He was 4 days short of 2 years in the job at Parkhead. No caretaker named. It's very fresh but I imagine they expect to appoint a new manager before players return anyway. Darren Young moves into 10th spot in the Top 10 as a result despite only being in charge at Stirling Albion for about 18 months. Scottish football is NOT a place for long term job security for managers!

Updated for appointment of Robin Veldman at Queen's Park.

I'm revisiting the Hearts situation following Frankie McAvoy's direct quotes in the press this week where he said that he'll have the final say in picking the team and that Naismith will be focusing on recruitment as well as his role on the training pitch. As both have been quoted as saying McAvoy's in charge we have to go with it I think even if it might be what they are saying because they are required to.

Vacant - Hibernian (Lee Johnson sacked on 27/08/2023. David Gray in caretaker charge).

Cleaned for start of new season with McAvoy technically now in charge of Hearts and Ray McKinnon's brief flirtation with Forest Green Rovers ignored. I've treated him as continually in charge at Forfar from 10th November 2022 despite his day or two down South in the last week. They never appointed any replacement. Indeed they never actually confirmed he had gone. They announced on Thursday 29th June that he had asked permission to speak to an English side and subsequently that Steve Fallon would take caretaker charge for Friday's friendly match. On Tuesday 4th July it was announced that McKinnon was staying after meeting with the English club who were never actually named but the press had been openly talking about him joining as assistant to Duncan Ferguson at Forest Green Rovers. Forest Green never made any official comment on McKinnon at all as far as I know but surprisingly dismissed Ferguson instead on 4th July. Publicly at least he never officially resigned so it's continuance service as far as the above list is concerned.

Edited for departure of Lee Johnson from Hibs.

*Note
Steven Naismith was appointed caretaker manager of Hearts on 9th April 2023. After a successfully spell he was given the job permanently on 7th June 2023. However, as he does not have a Pro Licence and Hearts qualified for Europe they were required to 'officially' name assistant Frankie McAvoy as manager on the same date. Naismith instead took on the title 'Technical Director'. Following Hearts elimination from European competition, Naismith was officially re-confirmed as Manager on 6th September 2023 with McAvoy reverting to assistant. As nobody surely seriously believes McAvoy was ever actually in charge, I've listed Naismith as continuous from 9th April and ignored McAvoy's official 3 month spell as manager.

If the technical most recent reappointment date of 6th September is instead used for Naismith then he drops eight places further down the list, in between Barry Smith and Nick Montgomery.

In what is surely the biggest shock of the season so far, Steven Naismith is now back as Head Coach at Hearts.

An absolute nonsense situation. I'd missed that. I'm inclined to backdate Naismith's period in charge to his original appointment. Nobody seriously believes McAvoy was actually in charge during his interim period surely?

Updated for dismissal of Billy Dodds at Inverness. Dodds was the SPFL's 9th longest serving manager with 2 years, 3.5 months in charge. His departure means Dougie Imrie, still more than 3 months from his 2nd anniversary in charge at Morton, moves into the top ten.

Billy Dodds' sacking means that over half of SPFL managers have been in position less than a year (21/41).

It's probably happened before, but it's the first time I've noticed it. It also makes the tenures of the top-5 look even more impressive.
