Seen a suggestion that it was for left foot and right foot balance with Otoo the other midfielder, but I'm not having that - if the manager thinks Chalmers is the better option then he'll play regardless of that (which I always find a nonsense argument anyway). I thought Allan was fine earlier in the season alongside Otoo and again on Friday he did pretty well, with his set piece delivery being on the money too. Big opportunity for him to show he's worth keeping as an option and not just a League One jobber. Allans crosses into the area are pretty good and have been consistently. We are much better set piece wise and even from non dead ball. For example the cross at the end of the arbroath game where Kane hit the post(and should really have scored). We were talking about him at the game on friday and think he maybe lacks a nasty edge to his game. Personally I think he might be better futher up the park rather than a sitting central mid, but he probably doesnt have the same running ability as Todd to get beyond defenders. At one point he skinned two players and then was fouled at the edge of the box but the ref let play continue so we could have a shot, the ref then went over to tell him it was a foul but he played advantage. Overal he is growing on me. Edited February 25 by Fifes Elite Force
Stellaboz
The thing with Allan is that he's now 24. He has to start showing that he's capable of coping at this level on a consistent basis, or we have to look elsewhere. For one reason or another, he's not actually had that much experience in the first team and I have my doubts that he's got the ability to kick on. Like McCann I think we've only seen it in small bursts.

He needs to make the shirt his own.
AuldReekie
I think we all want these boys to succeed but we're aiming to challenge for promotion next year. That's the benchmark. And that means the ability to impose themselves on games, consistently, against Thistle, Rovers, etc. There are glimpses of ability but there's been some very average performances. Players need to elevate themselves or the club has to be ruthless.

A win on Tuesday would be massive in that regard.
Paranoid
Any thoughts of trying players in different positions?

Don't think we have seen Moffat in the winger position, I think he could be quite effective in a 4-1-4-1 formation. But now Todd is back I guess that midfield 5 is more of a diamond shape with Todd and Hamilton at either end.

Well over Par
On the subject of Paul Allan, I think he would make a decent right back

I don't mind him as a player and will always give him a bit more slack as he's one of our own but he can't tackle for shit.

Well over Par
To be fair Hughes put Todd to right back and he excelled there. Your point is Allan couldn’t play right back ? Why not ?
parsforlife
Todd did ok at right back, but if we compare that too his performances at AM then it’s still pretty hard to justify that choice, it was ok to fill in when Comrie was out but should have been changed once Comrie was available
parsforlife
Tbh I’m not sure why we’re even discussing it, he’s just had a good game at center mid and we have signed an experienced right back just last week, why start arsing around with things?
Rob1885
Give him a run of games with otoo and Todd see how he goes.

Ok not sure he's very slow but he doesn't have the instant acceleration that others have. Him and Chalmers together are too slow as a pairing though. I think Paul Allan is fine as a presumably very cheap squad filler. He has a decent set play delivery reasonable passing but he does need to improve on his ability to break up play, and help drag the team up the pitch from the midfield.
HoBNob
Budget obviously comes into it, if he's not costing allot then I get keeping him as a squad option. My drama is that from open play he just doesn't contribute anywhere near enough to warrant a starting berth at this level IMO.
Nat Weederburn
Allan is fine as a squad player. I think he does more to progress the ball than Chalmers. I don't think his accuracy is as good, but I feel he tends to think quicker which is more important at this level. I'd be content moving on from both of them, however Chalmers has another year on his contract. I think what's a certainty is that the club needs to improve that area of the park in the summer. Ideally Otoo and Hamilton would be getting played there for most of the season but injuries have prevented that. There was a huge difference having Todd and Otoo's energy on Friday night.
