Walking Down The Halbeath Road

Recommended Posts

I think some of us are using the 'we would get horsed every week in the Championship' as some sort of positive spin for remaining in League One.

If we had gone up, yes we would have had to make a number of changes to our squad (which we will still have to do even if we win League One next season), yet our budget would have enabled us to most certainly compete with the likes of Alloa, Dumbarton, Livingston and Raith.

With Hibs going down, it just reinforces what a massive opportunity we have blown and instead of having several games to look forward to, we are faced with matches against teams who won't bring much to EEP at all.

If u had went up, we would have less chance of survival. Give me Alloa any day.

To be honest I feel it's a bit of a blessing in disguise as we'd be getting horsed most weeks, the confidence of the players would be shot and the home crowds would dwindle. Staying in this league for the time being will be better for the development of our players imo.

Sorry Gordon, not with you there. I would've gone with taking our chances - effectively we would have had 10 local derby games + the new recent addition to the league x2(which seem to carry a decent support inherited from the demise of Rangers FC) at EEP and a healthy revenue. With the right decisions and a bit of work we could have had the aim of finishing 8th as an achievable objective and consolidated our position. But alas we lost to Cowdenbeath, and we are where we are. My only hope is that the premier sides don't raise the spectre of a 14 team top league again and bring with it the meaningless fixtures that would come with it after 2/3 of the season had gone. I can see this happening though to get the 3 best supported clubs apart from Celtic (and poss Aberdeen) on the fast track back to the top flight. Protectionism still rules in our game (our previous board being involved in it when we were part of the ess-pee-ell), as proved by the cascading playoffs for the top flight which differ from the other play offs, but it didn't help Hibs. If the structure remains the same at least one of these three will remain if we can get there next season...

It is what it is. Absolutely no point in greeting about it.

Exactly. Winning the league this year is the best way to avoid any more playoff misery. We're in the correct league based on the team we put on the pitch. If we want to be back playing with the big boys we have to earn it.

We can't pretend this is a better place to be than the Championship but we've a chance to win this league. We filled the home end last Sunday for a third-tier, winner takes-all match so it shows that if there's a sniff of glory fans will come out for this club regardless of the level.

From facing oblivion, we've only dropped down one tier and finished second in the league, having played most of the season with a young, makeshift side. Just have to hope the players are hurting as much as the fans and they go all out to go one better next year.

Booo fucking hooo. At least we won't be infested by the Sevco mutants. We should just concentrate on what we do, not whine about the 'small' away crowds that come to East End. When did everyone become so obsessed by the size of visitng supports? Surely the club won't be taking the away support in to account when budgeting for the forthcoming season. It's an unknowable variable that can fluctuate wildly. If Morton or Ayr were going from promotion and had us at East near the end of the season, they could bring through 2000 fans. If they were stuck mid table, they might only bring about 150. People really need to quit the crowd wanking stuff.

^^^ What he said.

Also, the supporters who travel further are more likely to pay money into the club via the bars. Stranraer fans were particularly good at this and probably will be again in the season coming. I imagine Peterhead supporters will be the same. We're where we deserve to be and no hand wringing about the loss of potential crowds is going to change it.

We'd be getting our arses handed to us most weeks, and not just by the perceived bigger clubs either. The likes of Livingston and Alloa would destroy us as well. We've conceded an absolute shit load of comedy goals in League 1, if we had went up then it would be worse than the Stephen Kenny season as the players we have are nowhere near good enough for Championship level as proven by our games against Raith and Cowdenbeath this season.

Let's face it, it's ultimately been a bit of a failure on the park in Pars not being promoted this season and, if you take finances into account, it's a total disaster off it.

I don't know why people never take into account new signings when considering how well a team would do in the league above. Dunfermline would probably have full houses against Rangers, Hearts and Hibs next season and maybe even close to that for games with Falkirk and Raith. It was mentioned by your chairman that failure to gain promotion has cost you in the region of £1/2m which has probably increased with Hibs going down. Your budget would have been able to pish all over the likes of Dumbarton, Alloa, Livi and QoS and would have been bigger than Raith and maybe even Falkirk. No reason why Dunfermline couldn't have built a squad to challenge for the play-offs whilst comfortably living within their means.

It's an opportunity missed, without doubt, in every department and a bit of a shame from Dunfermline's point of view.

 What?!

You do realise we have a summer transfer window which would enable us to add better players right? Our budget would allow us to compete for mid-table safety in that league without question.

However, if we take that point out of the equation, how on earth is a season in a weaker 2nd Division/League One going to help us if we do manage to get promoted to the Championship? A number of players within our squad next season will not be good enough for Championship football the following year, so we will have to strengthen, just like we would have done had we gone up this season.

We had a January transfer window in which we signed 3 players. Only one of whom started in the play-off final. Who says that Jefferies won't make a similar mess in the summer? Another season in this league where we should be dominant will be better for the development of players such as Williamson and Martin than an season in which they are getting pumped week in week out with the Pars support on their back.

It's not like we would have a massive overhaul of players anyway. Of the starting 11 that played Cowdenbeath on Sunday I would say only Scully, Grainger, Geggan and Falkingham are good enough for Championship level. The rest aren't fully developed yet or not good enough (Thomson for one).
