Rum, bum and concertina :  George Melly

Inherited from my brother who died a few years ago - just got round to reading it now. Based on Melly's gay  seafaring days - very entertaining.

i mis-read the author as roger there. that would be a very different book.

recently finished:

1985 by Anthony Burgess

Top notch. A sort of weird critique of 1984, including imaginary dialectics, followed by a slim novella re-imagining it from the 70s.  The best explanation i've seen of why Thatcher was popular.

The Business by Iain Banks

Meh. Well written, well imagined premise and some great set pieces. Not enough plot for a thriller and not enough character to be anything else.

Europe's forgotten war.

Harrowing description of Prussian assault on Denmark

I think they've filmed it too. Enjoyed the book so will look out for adaptation

This was on BBC4 last year I think, a mini series, shown on Saturday nights at 9pm.  Danish production. Was pretty good.

Just finished Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Fascinating character and a really well written biography. I'd recommend to anyone interested in American history.

I also read France: a short history by John Julius. It's a fairly brief chronological overview of France, good for people like me who knows very little about French history but if you've even a basic knowledge then it's probably not worth reading.
