dorlomin
Scott Manley does an excellent video of the failure of the Arecibo Telescope. It has a video from a drone that was inspecting the cables as they failed.
welshbairn
Top man Scott Manley, tells curious laymen what they want to know without being patronising or using incomprehensible jargon shortcuts for only those in the know. Best hope for Arecibo is probably Puerto Rico getting State status under the Biden Presidency, so they have to get moving.

Shame about the telescope, was used in goldeneye. Even features in the game, horrendous level with automated mini cannons and Sean bean. Im kind of missing the point here and it’s sad that it got into this state of disrepair. Years of neglect I’d imagine.

welshbairn
Looks hopeful for12.5 km hop for SpaceX's Starship today. Should be pretty dramatic if they either manage the altitude and landing, or if they have to blow it up over the sea, or even if it just explodes when they light the engines. It's very experimental so any of these are possible. Take off planned for some time between 2pm and 11pm our time, I'd expect earlier rather than later if the weather holds up. welshbairn
SpaceX livestream starts about 4pm. P.S. Might not be too long, starting to vent gases, oxygen I think. Now saying they have hydraulic issues, so it could be a bit longer.... Rumour now is 9 - 10pm. Same rumour sources now saying 10pm. Some gas expelling from the storage tanks apparently was a big clue that there's 40 minutes to go. Zero updates from SpaceX. NASA observation planes just took off from Houston. If it doesn't happen my sources are arseholes. 1020 latest estimate. 11pm is cut off time. Edited December 8, 2020 by welshbairn

welshbairn
Looks like someone forgot to light the match. Aborted at T - 1.3 seconds. So it goes. Might try again tomorrow, who knows, it's experimental... Edited December 8, 2020 by welshbairn
