Europa Point?

stadium2.jpg

It's become bogged down in planning objections and environmental protestors - and they now seem to have abandoned plans to build a stadium seating 8,000-10,000 there, and go with 6,000 inland at Lathbury Barracks...

. I'll bite...

In 1967 they voted 99.64% to remain a Crown Colony (95.67% turnout)... in 2002 they voted 98.48% against 'joint sovereignty' (87.9% turnout).

As an autonomous self-governing territory they're entitled to participate, like Faroe Islands.

World football's governing body Fifa has been instructed to reconsider Gibraltar's application for membership.

The application was rejected in September 2014 by Fifa's executive committee, which said its requirements had not been met.

But the Court of Arbitration for Sport has told Fifa to submit Gibraltar's application to its Congress, which has the power to grant membership.

European football's governing body Uefa accepted Gibraltar in 2013.

Fifa is now set to discuss the situation at their next Council meeting, scheduled to take place on 9-10 May.

It will decide whether to amend the agenda at the next Congress in order to submit Gibraltar's application for membership.

A 6-0 defeat by Scotland in October saw the part-timers finish bottom of Group D in Euro 2016 qualifying without collecting a point.

However, without being accepted by Fifa they will not be able to enter the World Cup qualification process.

Cas said on Monday that Fifa's Congress "shall take all necessary measures to admit the Gibraltar FA as a full member of Fifa without delay".

As both Gibraltar and Kosovo were elected to FIFA last week, reports are they may be added to the 2 'short' groups for WC 2018 qualifying, i.e.

Group H - Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Greece, Estonia, Cyprus

Group I - Croatia, Iceland, Ukraine, Turkey, Finland

Interestingly the UEFA votes were:

admit Gibraltar (in 2013) - 51? for, 2 against

admit Kosovo - 28 for, 24 against, 2 abstained or invalid

Switzerland lobbied against admitting Kosovo, who were ultimately only 1 off from being rejected.

FIFA votes were:

admit Kosovo - 141 for, 23 against

admit Gibraltar - 172 for, 12 against

They didn't remain neutral?!

Far from it. According to thread on the Bert Kassies site the Kosovans expected to get 30-35 votes but in the end only got 28 and had anyone else not voted for them they'd not have got in. Apparently the Kosovans pointed the finger at the Swiss.

Not sure if it's just the players thing or if there's some political or historical friction.

Bump.

Plans for the spectacular Europa Point stadium seem to have been officially dropped.

Gibraltar government is now saying they'll continue upgrading the existing Victoria Stadium to full CL/EL 'Category 2' standard, and build a new stadium at Lathbury Barracks.

It'll apparently be smaller than the 8,000-seater 'Category 4' planned for Europa Point. UEFA has agreed to allow an exemption for a 4,000 to 6,000 capacity 'Category 3' venue.

Bump.

Lincoln, who beat Celtic in CL qualifier and have won the Gibraltar Premier Division for 14yrs running, face a fight to the end this season despite having monopolised players courtesy their CL money. They're 2pts behind Europa with 4 games left to Europa's 3, so any slip-up could see them lose the title and its CL access.

Both clubs also meet in the Rock Cup final and as UEFA have awarded Gibraltar a second EL place from this season it looks like St Joseph will also qualify for Europe though on paper they can yet be caught by Glacis United.

Gibraltar is also hosting the 2019 Island Games but in surprise news there will be no football tournament. When they last hosted the event in 1995 there was such a competition held.

Despite their resources Lincoln Red Imps - who beat Celtic at the start of the season - failed to win the Gibraltar Premier. They dropped 2pts v Mons Calpe a fortnight ago and College Europa won and will enter CL next season.

Lincoln and St Joseph will enter EL.

College Europa and Lincoln meet in the Rock Cup Final tomorrow.

UEFA now consider the existing Victoria Stadium is unsuitable for European ties... Attempts are being made to gain permission to use the La Linea Municipal on the Spanish side of the border, but the government may refuse. You can see how close La Balona's stadium is. If refused they may have to play in Faro or the UK.

In separate news plans for a new stadium at Lathbury Barracks - which replaced plans for an iconic stadium at Europa Point - have been dropped. GFA have now bought the existing Victoria Stadium from Gibraltar government and will rebuild to UEFA standards, seating 8,000, with community sport facilities at the other 2 sites.

It's claimed it will be ready for Euro 2020 qualifying commencing 2018.

Rebuild was previously backed by Gibraltar's SDP:

History made in Faro tonight as Gibraltar won their first-ever competitive international... Gibraltar U21s 1-0 FYR Macedonia U21s.

(FYR Macedonia U21s beat Scotland U21s home-n-away last season, btw!).

Before tonight they'd managed 2 competitive draws... Liechtenstein U19s 1-1 Gibraltar U19s last year, and Gibraltar U17s 0-0 Faroe Islands U17s in 2014.

Great result for them. They actually have a decent record in friendlies - out of 10 played they've 2 wins, 3 draws & 5 losses - but this was their first since September 2016. Maybe struggling to find interested opponents, or pay for away trips. They did not get a favourable Nations League draw - FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein (who they've drawn v before) - but possibilities.

Liam Walker of Notts County got the goal.

Sadly the rest of their smattering of professionals have all retired from football in general or the national team in particular, except a lad at Torquay.

Out of interest what are the "rules" for determining who gets to play for Gibraltar? Do you have to be born there, or have a parent born there, or can any UK-born footballer who feels like it join up?

They operate under normal FIFA rules not the United Kingdom "gentlemans agreement".

Therefore you have to be born there - which a surprising numbers of professionals have been, courtesy the military bases - or have a parent or grandparent.

Normal FIFA rules allow for "naturalised" players who have been resident for - I think - 3 years and hold citizenship and not been capped by another nation.  There is potential therefore for Gibraltar to field Spaniards or other imports who live there and take out a UK Gib passport.
