Absolutely but you know, I know and Barry robson knows that the team that started tonight isn’t the team that should be regularly playing this season. I totally get why he picked it tonight though and actually the changes he made and the timing of it were good so fair play to him. And wrong Is it that strange when you scratch the surface? we have to assume hayes isn’t fit, mcgarry won’t be ready for 60 mins never mind 90, you could bring in Jensen to a back 3 and push Mackenzie out there but Jensen joined the squad at midnight the night before. Clearly we don’t feel McDonald is up to starting yet either. Robson does not want to be playing Duncan every week as a wing back, but he’s assessed the options and gone with it. You could argue he could’ve gambled on someone else but the logic behind the selection was pretty clear to me. The game didn’t go so badly that it was ‘clearly wrong’. I'm quayside in Gothenburg Ferry Terminal waiting for the ship to set sail for Denmark just as the fans did 40 years ago when they boarded the St Clair (lest we forget, minus one me of Red Army who sadly passed away at the match, robbing him of the opportunity to experience his team's finest hour, but becoming forever part of the story himself). The weather is grey and drizzly just as it was on the 11th May 1983 but my mood is upbeat and joyous. Just as it's a Muslim's obligation to visit Mecca if they have the financial means, then it should be the obligation of every Don to visit this special city that's etched into the heart of every Don. I first visited 10 years ago to mark the 30 year anniversary but to see the team here, and watch the players fight back in a stirring performance was very special. Nicky Devlin is very quickly becoming a cult figure to us Dons. He's had to work hard in a journeyman career to get his big break, but here he is at 29, squeezing every last morsel of effort and determined to grab his opportunity with both hands. As he bore down on and calmly flicked it over the keeper and into the net, I began the age old custom of gesticulating in triumph to the home fans, a woman in her late 50s tapped me on my shoulder and said, "that's ma boy". It was Mrs Devlin, accompanied by her husband, and as I sang the praises of her offspring, the Dons fans burst into a rendition of "One Nicky Devlin, there's only one Nicky Devlin". The proud parents said they had never experienced anything like it before. I was privileged to be in Dnipro and the 3-0 in Rijeka but this result feels like it might be the beginnings of another special team....or maybe I'm just basking in the glory of a wonderful evening in a special place. In the week that I gained a new Dons hero in Aston Villa's 1982 European Cup winner Des Bremner and an ex-Hibs player, who proudly declared himself a Dandy when replying with neither when asked if he was supporting Aston Villa or Hibs, I too have his passion this morning... We're all Des Bremner... P.S. Hopefully the club recognise Des and have him walk out at Pittodrie and give the Dons support the opportunity to salute him.
