banana
Messi has dominated European football for years and has almost single-handedly turned Barcelona into possibly the greatest club side ever. Holy shit, people actually think this
Jambo'ness
Here was me thinking football was a team game. Unless you can provide the name of someone who has performed well in goal, defence, midfield & attack the whole subject is pointless. Co.Down Hibee
Messi has dominated European football for years and has almost single-handedly turned Barcelona into possibly the greatest club side ever. He may not have performed as well for Argentina but people who say he hasn't done it at the highest level are deluded, just look at his Champions League performances and record-breaking 21 El Clásico goals. Not even remotely close and if you're going to go down this route then it strengthens the case for Maradona as he was by far the best player for Argentina,Napoli and Barca when they won trophies. How does it "strengthen the case" for Maradona when he won far, far less than Messi already has in Europe (who is also, of course, by far the best player for Barcelona and Argentina)? As already stated Maradona didn't come close to winning the European Cup whereas Messi has already won 3, and going by major honours Messi has won 21 and counting compared to Maradona's 10.The only thing in favour of Maradona is the fact he has won the World Cup. Everyone has their opinion but when it comes down to facts such as goals scored and trophies won it's not even close.

redrocky
Maradona is the best of all time. The top 4 are Maradona, Pele, Messi and Di Stefano. After the top 4 there is a group of players that includes the likes of Cruyff, the Ronaldos (all 3 of them), Zidane, Puskas, Eusebio, Romario, Baggio, Platini, Best, Garrincha, Zico. RandomGuy.
To be fair to dryhorce, a large percentage of Brazilians would say Garrincha is better than Pele. Theres two or three other names that would pop up too. Peles "mystique" is far greater in Europe, despite seeing less of him
YassinMoutaouakil
I remember when ESPN Classic used to show grainy footage of old world cups and Garrincha always stood out. The fact that that he shagged a goat takes some of the shine off it though. As for the OP -Messi.
