The Storms & Severe Weather Thread

After having picked up the blue wheelie bin three times this morning I've conceded and stuck it in the garage until this all blows over.

No doubt I'll be out sticking the green and brown ones in it too as the day progresses.

Fair blowing a hoolie here.

109 mph gusts reported in the Cairngorms earlier today and below someone photoed a tornado in Burton on Trent

But on the whole a mild start and quite glad this is the case especially with most of the trees still having leaves which add more weight to branches making them more prone to breaking, could have been a lot worse.

Heavy Rain and Severe Gales for NW Scotland Over Next Few Days
Issued on 25/10/2014 at 11:50
Valid From: 25/10/2014 at 11:00 until 27/10/2014 at 23:59
Areas affected in detail:
N and W Scotland
Weather type:
Heavy Rain and Severe Gales
Alert risk period:
25/10/14 12:00 until 28/10/14 00:00
Alert details:
A deep area of low pressure tracking northeast near Iceland over the weekend will allow an increasingly strong and moist southwesterly flow to develop by Sunday across the far north of Britain.

A slow-moving frontal system aligned with the southwesterly flow will bring spells of heavy rain to NW Scotland over the next few days, lasting through until at least Tuesday morning, before the frontal system finally moves south on Tuesday. Rainfall totals in excess of 100mm are possible across northwestern parts of Scotland, perhaps as much as 200mm across higher ground. These large rainfall totals may lead to disruption due to flooding.

In addition, gales or severe gales are likely, with wind gusts of 50-60mph across northern and western Scotland and perhaps as far south as the north coast of Northern Ireland and Cumbria, with gusts of 60-70mph across exposed coasts and hills of NW Scotland - particularly early on Sunday. So there may be disruption to ferry crossings and also a risk to high-sided vehicles on exposed routes.
Confidence:
80%
Issued by Nick Finnis for Netweather.tv
Weather Alert Information
The netweather forecast team will issue watches and alerts whenever severe weather is likely. Watches are issued, usually in advance of warnings to give an indication that severe weather is possible. Once within a more certain timeframe, if necessary, an alert will be issued. At the closest range, flash alerts may be issued to warn of severe weather that may occur within a few hours.

Very blustery and a bit of wind chill out at the Caley Stadium this afternoon, plenty of showers seen out to the west moving south east, but missed the Inverness area.

A few lightning strikes up of the north west coast and up in Shetland http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=lightning;sess=

I can confirm it was blowing a hoolie at ardnamurchan point today. Buffeted about at sea level and nearly blown off (lol) on ben hiant at a dinky 1500 feet. Had to crawl on hand and knees to summit.

Fingers crossed my ferry is on tomorrow

To late to build that ark http://www.raintoday.co.uk/

Pretty much all the wind and rain to the west of the A9 motorway. Looks like the wet stuff will be drifting down and giving the Strathclyde and Central areas later today.

Flood alerts now in effect http://floodline.sepa.org.uk/floodupdates/

A82 Glasgow to Ft William road blocked due to landslide. Trees and debris across the road. Both Northbound and Southbound traffic being diverted to the A9

Not only was the ferry off so an hour and a half to do the 40 mile detour to fort william i get there to see half a hill falling down onto the road. Another 5 minutes quicker and i would have been one of the 15 cars stuck between the two landslides.

Luckily its 6 and half a dozen whether you go a82/85 or a9 to dundee from fort william. Bit of a scunner if you need to get to ballachulish or kinlochleven though, thats a 160 mile detour
