FIFA officials arrested.

Of course they did. You cannot bid for the world cup without doing something wrong, no matter how trivial.

The bribes they were offering were obviously not big enough.

I am actually surprised that bids like France 1998 (which only had Morocco as opposition), South Africa 2010 (which was 'ringfenced' for Africa under the rotational system) and Russia 2018 would have needed to have bribed people to have won their tournaments?

In the first 2 cases they were the stand-out candidates - to the degree that anyone else winning almost seems unthinkable in hindsight - and Russia was not a surprise winner being a huge and wealthy country, and Eastern Europe never having held it before: England got a solitary 2 votes in R1 and thereafter the opposition were Iberian and Benelux joint bids, which they comfortably surpassed to win 13-7-2 in R2 without even a need for R3.

Or was it just the done thing: you had to bribe to please the blazers?

I think that's the nail hit at the end.

Even if members of the ExCo were going to going to vote for you, or wanted to, you had better give them a pile of cash to make sure because that's just the way it's done.

Who can realistically step in at short notice to host 2018?

Probably down to England, Germany or Italy. France has the Euros and no one else in Europe has the infrastructure right now.

2022 should be a dead cert to go to Australia IMO.

They will have done something wrong. Beckham offering free aftershave or something Wait and see.

No, the most common complaint about English bids contain the words "arrogance" and "naive"..

England believe that a cup of tea with Prince William and a handshake from David Beckham should seal the deal with their strongest critics. Treating FIFA executives as if they were Daily Mail readers is never a good idea.

the fa were at it as well.they ensured that Fifa officials stayed in nice hotels during the Olympics for example. The idea that the fa are some sort of crusaders against bribery is utterly ridiculous. Their bribery wasnt as attractive.

Here are England's votes for 2006 & 2018:

2006

R1: Germany 10, South Africa 6, England 5, Morocco 2

R2: Germany 11, South Africa 11, England 2 *eliminated*

2018

R1: Russia 9, Iberia 7, Benelux 4, England 2 *eliminated*

If they were bribing, they were pretty bad bribers...

People voted for England in round one and then abandoned them in the second?

It's not bribery, it's "charm offensive".

And when they lost the vote, it was rescinded.

Astonishing how Jack Warner thought he was untouchable, and made no serious effort to disguise the fact he was nicking $10 million. The most serious attempt to launder it was to have a big chunk transferred to a local supermarket firm who gave it back to him in T+T currency. Not even a pretendy "football development project" in sight.

The US could host a summer event entirely in 100,000+ stadiums with a couple months notice. The 1994 USA World Cup still has the record for total attendance, even with only 24 teams. And that was when nobody here knew what the World Cup was.

Fucking English mewling - they better not get near hosting the world cup.

It's fairly ridiculous that the country which invented the game has hosted 1 World Cup. Especially considering that it's a 1st world country with the infastructure to host and a place that people around the world like to visit (not Russia and Qatar).

Scotland has never hosted the world - and never will - despite having played a significant part in the development of football. It means very little to anyone these days.

Also, you don't want to visit Russia? seems pretty interesting to me.

The so called Home Nations weren't part of FIFA for the first 3 World Cups. Even though they kissed and made up after WWII there might have been an up yours until 1966 then Heavylunge took over in 1974 and it all went tits up.

They only bid for 1966, 2006 & 2018. Spain has only hosted 1 World Cup. You could argue that it was ridiculous that the USSR/CIS/Russia has had to wait until 2018 for a WC... they had Olympics in 1980.

Incidentally - the English originally planned to share the 1966 World Cup with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. I have never seen anything explaining how it would have worked in detail (perhaps proposals never reached that stage), but I have an edition of Football Champions - the thinking boy's soccer annual - where it is discussed in relation to what became their WC 1966 bid. We declined, as we hoped to host it ourselves subsequently ...
