Wow, just wow. I believe it is what is known in modern day terms as an attempt at humour, of course nobody wants to see someone's leg broken. If you have watched the highlights of their game and read some of the post match meltdowns by Dunfermline fans then you could maybe understand why it is being used as a comical reference.
