The one thing the Justice System hates above all else, is someone messing with the Justice System. Things like this and perjury are dealt with really, really harshly in comparison to, say, drink driving / child porn offences that you might think should be treated much more harshly.

Unless the perjury is by prosecution witnesses in the persuit of a conviction, don't hear so much about that messing with the justice system.

62 years old, first offence, ill health and a decorated whistleblower who highlighted UK collusion in torture in Uzbekistan.
Convicted sex offenders regularly walk out of Scottish courts with non custodial sentences.

I don't think so he's not the type. Where are you getting that from?

Assange doesn't think he is security services anyway which seems good enough.

Assange needs to keep him sweet in case he needs someone to leak the name of a complainant in a future trial

I look forward to all the others that reported on this and allowed jigsaw identification to face similar treatment.  <-- Sarcasm.

How about the MSM journalist (and experienced court reporter) that actually tweeted a prosecution witnesses name during the trial?

Slap on the wrist and "don't do it again". I don't think he was even banned from attending the rest of the trial!

It's mainly rumour but a lot of them and I've heard a couple of credible ones, including from someone who was in the same embassy for a couple of years. It's why he was sent to Uzbekistan in the first place, had a damascene conversion/loss of nerve when he got there. Certainly makes more sense than his version of entering the FCO which is "I didn't even want to go in but I just turned up for the test because a girl I fancied was doing it and I just happened to get the third highest test score re of the year." After poor A Levels and by his own account refusing to go to lectures at Dundee...

I think 8 month is harsh but I doubt he'll do much time if any after appeal. It seems to be the high heid yins in the judiciary don't like it when folk openly defy them. Think all others removed/apologised for overstepping the mark on identifying complainers CM was asked/told to remove the blog and didn't. I've seen CM speak a good few times at various rallys and he always came across as a bit of harmless but odd member of the indy movement. I've always been wary of anyone who has worked with UK Government overeas services. Maybe I've watched to many Bond movies though I can't see Craig Murray or Rory Stewart getting to shag Pussy Galore.

I don't think much of his politics but being in the FCO doesn't necessarily mean MI6 and if he was then his entire whistleblowing episode would have to be a set up. Assange, Pilger and other credible people seem to trust him so that's good enough for me.

I don't think describing his actions in Uzbekistan as a loss of nerve is at all accurate. Thousands and thousands of British civil servants have held their nose or looked the other way in Ulster, Kenya, Malaysia, Iraq etc. Murray is renowned because he took a step that none of his peers have managed to take which is courageous.

He's definitely guilty of the charges against him but so are another dozen journalists. A custodial sentence is obscene and another reason why any effort to get rid of juries in Scotland has to be resisted.

I didn’t follow this too closely but this was my understanding too.  This is why he’s been dealt with so severely and, in reality, he must have anticipated that this would happen.

No, I am afraid they all did exactly the same thing and he is a political prisoner. The only possible explanation of course! Not lots of people pretending to be thick at all

Malinovsky managed to get the entire Bolshevik leadership exiled or jailed.

Craig Murray got 2000 votes as an independent in Blackburn against Jack Straw and runs a festival where Atari Teenage Riot headlined a couple of years ago.

Not quite on the same level.

There’s plenty of time yet before Patrick Harvie has to serve out exile on the Isle of Wight
