Cristiano Ronaldo is still technically a Sporting Lisbon player. He's just went through a series of loan deals throughout his career. No wonder the Portuguese national team are doing so well. Oxford were supposed to have had a bid for him kb'd on deadline day a couple of seasons ago at around £400k (via BBC). I don't know if their circumstances have changed any in terms of ownership (obviously Appleton's no longer there) but you'd think we'd probably be open to being flexible with them on the basis of getting a sell on in there...it worked out alright with Marv.
