TxRover
“Judge” Cannon blows her top and refuses to hold a Garcia hearing in Florida. She argued that Jack Smith’s team should have filed some objections prior to the hearing date. This was the Garcia hearing for Nauta, the previous hearing for de Oliveira went smoothly(a Garcia hearing is named such because of the Garcia case that involved determining if defendants represented by an attorney that represents an other defendant(s) understands the conflict of interest situation and that their attorney may not be representing their best interests overall). The objection was to Woodward, the current lawyer for Nauta, and paid by Trump’s PAC, from questioning a previous client who fired Woodward, accepted a public defender and then recanted testimony encouraged by Woodward.
Granny Danger
Of al, the batshit mental stuff going on in the GOP the ongoing George Santos mini opera must be the most amusing. Not sure of the context of this:
carpetmonster
Judge Chutkan could well rule on Trump being slapped with a gag order today. If one was being cynical, one might wonder if he’d like that, so he can fire off lots of grifty emails about him being silenced by woke left activist judges and your contribution being needed to counter that. That would be cynical tho. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2023/oct/16/trump-gag-order-jan-6-trial-biden-israel-politics-live-updates

RiG
One good thing, if there is a good thing, about another Trump run is Jordan Klepper mocking Trump supporters.

Jordan Klepper’s stuff is funny but it loses its appeal when you realise that for every unhinged fuckwit he interviews there’s another million with the right to vote.

Looks like Sean Hannity’s got more threatening phone calls to make. We’re now at 13 Republicans voting for someone besides Jim Jordan to serve as House speaker. This guarantees two things: Jordan will need to hold a second election if he wants to win, and he will have a lot of convincing to do to get the holdouts to flip their votes. It’s also worth mentioning many of Jordan’s Republican opponents represent swing districts, and their opposition may be a sign that they believe Jordan’s embrace of various extreme positions, including Donald Trump’s baseless fraud claims concerning the 2020 election, will not play well with voters back home.

welshbairn
I wonder how many of the hold outs are retiring and don't give a f**k about the threats of primaries.

The 6 McCarthy votes are all saying Jordan can’t govern. The 7 Scalise votes are a protest against the process, like the Emmer, Cole and Garcia votes. None of the 20 have announced a retirement or a run for another office yet. Fun bit, a number of R’s promised to vote for Jordan “on the first vote”…so todays vote could get amusing.
Granny Danger
Those opposing Jim Jordan should propose Joe Jordan as an alternative. Given how fucked up the GOP is he might get enough votes.
coprolite
My knowledge of US politics is limited too -they have a lot of silly names; they have a lot of silly haircuts; they have a president and two types of House of Commons. republicans = tories+ ukip; democrats = tories + labour. bearing that in mind, can someone explain what’s going on there?

There will be others better qualified to answer, but in short whilst Trump has the overwhelming majority of Republicans in his thrall there are still a number of exceptions. Given the small GOP majority in the house those glorious few are making the governance of their party unworkable. On a separate but related note, once Trump is jailed/dead/fails to win in 2024 the GOP is going to have to address what a total clusterfuck it has become. There will be mini-me Trumps popping up all over the place tearing the Republican Party apart. It should be fun to watch.

welshbairn
At least one of the Republicans who voted for Jordan yesterday has voted against him, and they're only on the Cs in the alphabetical roll call.

The loonball right are getting an absolute kicking here. So they’ll end up without their guy and keep voting the poor sod who does get the job out. Hope nobody is expecting any governmenting anytime soon.

I think they might give the pro tem Speaker more powers for a month or so in case Israel is running out of bombs.
welshbairn
Jordan gained 2 votes but lost 4, consensus seems to be that he's fucked, more people voting against him than Mccarthy on his worst ballot. House in recess to decide where to go, looks like either a 3rd vote for Jordan or a vote to give the temporary Speaker more powers for a limited period.
